And if the conditions were really that terrible, then it would only encourage migrants to stop crossing the border.

That would only work if the administration was public about how terribly they treat illegal immigrants. Considering they seem to be trying to cover up the truth about living conditions in these facilities, that doesn't seem to be their main goal.

With tens of thousands of detainees and members of Congress visiting, you'd think there would be one shred of evidence to support these awful conditions.

1. Speeding isn't a misdemeanor
2. If you don't jail/deport someone for hopping the border, you are essentially allowing anyone to cross
3. It seems like pretty good incentive to stay in Mexico if you don't want to risk this "disproportional" punishment

No, Jeff Sessions switched to family separation as the default explicitly as a deterrent. Under Obama most people were released pending trial.

Obviously, in addition to being extremely inhumane, the deterrent did not work (in fact, a contributing factor to the surge of border crossings is the fear that it wouls soon become even harder to get in due to Trump).

Nah I think you're misunderstanding my philosophy here.

I am PRO immigration. I think the laws should be changed to allow for most people to come in without any bureaucratic red tape, and for minimum wage laws to be abolished so they can work at whatever market value they choose to work for. If they can do the jobs of Americans for less money, then go ahead. And yes, I understand that this would be a completely unpopular position if I were a politician.

I am ANTI law breaking. Until the immigration laws are changed, you have to enforce the border policy. And at the scale by which the laws are broken, I am fine with extreme measures taken until Congress can actually change the law.

I posted this a few topics ago when the report came out, but it gained no traction here. Since it's the topic of conversation again now, figure I'll repost it since it's relevant.

DHS-OIG Report from June 3rd: https://www.oig.dhs.gov/sites/default/files/assets/2019-06/OIG-19-47-Jun19.pdf

PDF is 28 pages but summarizing some of what they found:

They inspected 4 ICE sites.
-Nooses in cells
-All 4 facilities had issues with expired food; including spoiled and moldy food.
-3 facilities used segregation practices that violated standards and infringed on the the rights of the detainees
-2 facilities failed to provide recreation outside of housing units
-2 facilities had dilapidated and moldy bathrooms
-1 facility did not provide appropriate clothing and hygiene items
-1 facility only allowed non-contact visits despite being able to accommodate in-person visits

And again this is coming from the administration on an inspection of 4 sites.

Edit: And as the report notes, ICE detainees are held in civil, not criminal, custody.

That's understandable. To me, it was more that the government itself was admitting this. We've obviously had the reports from lawyers, doctors, media, and members of Congress long before this so it isn't really "new" per se.
