Nobody is trying to argue that Sephy is the "better person" compared to red sox. I can't emphasize that enough.

Basically, red sox is gonna red sox and Sephy is gonna Sephy. I think most of us have no illusions of getting either of them to change. I question the value of regularly engaging with either one, but the effects on the readability of the topic are very different.

You, like most people here, still act like an actual human being. Getting you to modify your behavior isn't out of the question, at least when you aren't being overly defensive (which we could probably do a better job of not getting you to do).

i only spent 6 posts on an argument with red sox, though. and let's be real, there's going to be plenty of dumb arguments in this topic regardless of whether or not i engage with red sox. also, i'm sure i won't change anyone's mind with the following, but i really didn't think the argument was that dumb. we seemed to be able to agree on a few points (1) insults are less bad than oppression, 2) there's a general problem in today's society that insults have become socially acceptable [possibly moreso on the internet than in real life], which goes beyond the question of whether the left or the right is more insulting). that's more progress than i often make with people i disagree with in this topic. plus i thought the "hillary was unable to say a positive thing about trump" thing he brought up was an interesting point that i wanted to comment on. i won't for now, as i'm tired of constantly being assaulted by an angry mob for responding to red sox posts, but yeah.

i'm glad that multiple people are now being critical of people engaging with sephy, though. that's progress! usually, when i bring him up in response to people attacking me for my debates with red sox, i just get some kind of "GET YOUR STUPID WHATABOUTISM OUT OF HERE YOU MORON" response.

So I'm in Ontario, Canada this weekend and drove through a town, Meaford, of population 11,000 on the shore of Lake Huron. They have a WWI memorial with the names of their fallen in service of king and country - 43 names. I looked up the total US casualties for the Iraq war by city:

New York (all 5 boroughs) - 56
Los Angeles - 31
San Francisco - 3

The casualties per population are around 600x higher for Meaford in WWI than for those 3 big American cities for the Iraq War. And that's assuming the population of Meaford is the same now as 100 years ago.

While normally this is right, sometimes people's behavior reaches the point where there is no reasoning with them and if you ignore them they will take more and more. In this case, if you have the power to stop them, the correct strategy is tit for tat, implacable opposition, until they are crushed and defeated. This is the strategy the Democrats have forced Mitch McConnell to use against them.

well, you have to see things from my perspective to understand why i said that. i actually enjoy arguing with red sox (well, usually) and like i said, i think people arguing with sephy makes this topic way worse and more toxic than an argument between me and red sox ever could. so when people explicitly say "YOU must give up something you enjoy doing, while WE'RE going to continue making this topic horrible for you!" then yes, my response is "fuck off, i'm just going to respond to whoever the hell i want." i don't see why i'm obligated to make a sacrifice for people who are doing 0% to make MY experience of this topic more pleasant.

From my perspective, arguing with red sox makes the topics a bit worse than arguing with sephy, but only because I have both ignored. Thus when people argue with sephy, I only see a post here or there missing. When people are arguing with red sox, I just see almost entire pages missing.

I understand the toxic argument, to be fair. It's just much easier to ignore one than the other because only one of them takes up like 90% of the topic at times.

Also yes sephy meaning what he says makes him a more tolerable poster - not a better person, not at all that, but as far as the topic goes when he says something vile you just already know not to bother with or take seriously, while red sox just baits people with made-up idiocy to stretch out worthless debates that are as inflammatory and irrational as they are fictional. Responding to someone who doesn't mean what they say is just... why? The only purpose of his posts are to come up with another crazy thing to keep you going, you may as well be arguing with a mannequin and making up its responses since that's all red sox does.
