Most of the servers are really high in population. There's even a couple that Blizzard has said will have queue's as high as 10,000 unless some people choose to reroll onto other servers.

Guess Blizzard underestimated how popular Classic would be.

Or it is excellent spin to have to open more servers after.

Oh

Dont currently have a working pc. But gonna buy one soon. Looks like all the B8 people are gonna be spread out.

I've played mostly only Alliance Paladin during WOTLK so I really don't know what I'll play. Horde probably since I've never really played that faction.

So I rushed home after work and got into the character creation screen on reserve day all ready to start reserving Desuka.... then decided I didn't want to do that at all and spent like 3 hours trying to think up a name.

I was thinking the same. Originally I thought I should grab an undead warlock named Pale and an orc Shaman named Church.

but...

that was ten+ years ago. The people I played with are old and probably wouldn't dream of throwing away any more of their life to this game, or they're stuck in Fortnight, or they have other friends. The culture I participated (and the person I was) aren't really going to be the same, so this should be a fresh start.

I'll fire it up, and if my backup names are taken, well, I'll look around the room and name my character after the first thing that catches my eye.

I'd love to group up with B8 folks but I imagine we all have our own pace of play. I imagine my East Coast dad schedule won't play well with a West Coast dad schedule and especially not with any sort of bachelor schedule. So I figure I'll just sign up for whatever server and go from there.

It'd be cool if we had the option like in GW2 that we could have our own Board 8 guild while also having other guilds. alas.

As far as newbie friendly, WoW is fine. Some people will be high level quickly, but you don't have to stress about them. If you take forever, it'll probably take you longer to get through some of the content. And who knows about endgame longevity - people might not care to farm MC/BWL forever. In my time in WoW, it was like 3 different phases...
1. Newbie through level 40 mount. You're learning the ropes, exploring, questing, dying, having fun, it's fairly straight forward in a way. The mount (for most...) is the first time you have to legit grind for a permanent/long term upgrade, and it changes your day to day experience.
2. 40 Mount to endgame - The mount is the first thing you've had to really save up for. And in this time, expectations increase - you sort of need to know what you're doing, or to know to look it up or ask for help. You also have friends in the 50s if not 60, and it starts to act as an impetus to get yourself up. You've also likely gotten along well with people and been added to a guild.
3. endgame

Server popularity - it will be hard to login at first! you wanted vanilla, you got it. They might add servers a week later. Endgame, I'm curious to see how people will enjoy organizing 40 man raids and waking up at 4am to kill world dragons again.

I read a good idea yesterday - try an RP server because once the novelty wears off (assuming it does), the RPers and the hardcore players will the ones left.

I never had to deal with it in WoW, but I guess it's also a good idea to avoid streamers because they mess up chat and they can mess with quest hubs, etc.

I downloaded WoW classic a couple days ago in order to pick servers and make characters, and discovered I needed a live WoW account to do so. No surprise there. But what did strike me was that so many of the servers were already designated as full. Like, am I going to be able to start up on Tuesday?

They intend to do layering for the first month, which means way more people than the servers can handle will be allowed in and they'll split people up into separate instances.

So if me and you are on the same server in the Barrens we might be in different instances of the Barrens

I would say public reception to this is .... super poor. and I'm very annoyed by it. That kind of tech is probably one of the most annoying and community breaking things about Retail WoW.

But Blizzard believes this is necessary for the initial launch and then will turn it off after a month.

I think they're wrong. This method is under the assumption that player count will drop off drastically after a month, which may happen.

But if it doesn't, which may also happen, then we'll be stuck with servers with vastly more players than they can hold without a queue, meaning either they'll have to keep layering or open new servers for people to reroll on.

I don't want to have to reroll. And I definitely don't want layering.

I think I got my fill of classic WoW just from playing in private servers and stuff over the last year or two. it's kinda cool that this is finally happening, but I almost feel spoiled in a way. I'm not really prepared to pay money for something that has been free for so long. essentially I'd just be paying to be part of the experience of participating on an official server. and at this point I've kinda burned myself out on the game anyway. maybe next time I get the urge to play we'll see if WoW classic is even still a thing anymore.

that'd be pretty cool. the two things that would make me interested are

1. TBC, but this is really a short term interest. it only lasts for as long as TBC is relevant, and then if they re-release the next thing which I have no nostalgia for I would probably not care too much.

2. they release new content but without fundamentally changing the game. with retail they have released a lot of new content, but they've also changed the game a lot. I think it'd be cool if Classic just became its own separate, alternate universe or something. where we could get more content without them changing the way the game plays. this could potentially be a long term interest, but only if the idea is as good as it seems in my head.

The other option is to stand up more servers which would be a large money pit, especially if people bail once the novelty wears off and the grind sets in. I have no idea what I'd expect if I were Blizzard. Day 1 is going to be a disaster, sure. I also don't really know their infrastructure. I do agree that server layering sounds unappealing... but it's better to start that way than to end that way (look at GW2)

Hoo boy. This could be a cool idea, if they at least release TBC first and update the game to that era of mechanics. Continuing with new content with Vanilla mechanics would be lol.

I heard someone make the point of why don't they add some raids to classic that are just plain old dungeons that don't necessarily have earth shattering lore significance. Like why not just have a big cave full of spiders or something. Point being you can design fun raids without having to build an entire world around them. Seemed pretty valid an argument to me.

Think I'm gonna go mage with tailoring and enchanting. Don't wanna bother with competing over mining/herbalism nodes, and tailoring just seems a better fit for mage than skinning. I like the idea of never needing to go out of my way for my professions while leveling.

Now the question is just down to forsaken or troll...

I'm considering just taking one of tailoring/enchanting at first and using skinning just to grab stuff to vendor since i probably wont invest a ton of resources into training it while levelling anyway. then I'll grab the other later. Not sure yet though.

hot tip: do not go mining/herbalism together. You can only track one type of node at a time in Classic. If you want double gathering go Skinning/one of the two.

It's decided. I'm swapping to alliance.

I got to thinking about it, and my first character back in '07 was alliance. Had all my first experiences with the game on alliance. Got that character to 70 and did a (very) little raiding, then swapped to a server where some of my friends were playing horde and found myself a new main there. Overall my play time ratio is probably like 8:1 horde:alliance.

So when I think of alliance I feel more nostalgic. When I think of horde I feel more accomplished. That's where I did all my actual raiding and competitive PVP.

With it being vanilla, it only feels right to go the more nostalgic option, since I'm not exactly getting into this with killing KT as a priority. More just to have the leveling experience, be a part of the community, mess around doing random things, etc.

Plus the first alt I ever made was a gnome mage. Petered out around level 21 or something. Seems all the stars are pointing me toward picking back up where I left off there.

A woman next to me is playing a word game on her phone. She gets my attention and says "you know how sometimes when you stare at a word long enough, it just doesn't seem like a normal word anymore?"

She points to her mobile game and says, "what's this word?"

I look over and the word is literally mage.
