I mained a Warlock back in the day. It's a fun class but you get stuck farming soul shards especially if you're the raid's main Warlock. I actually kinda liked the role as long as people were cool about it.

I'm gonna be taking my leisurely time leveling. A good portion of what I'm looking forward to getting out of this official release of classic is the vanilla leveling experience itself. I wanna kick back and enjoy it and get into all sorts of tomfoolery along the way.

No such thing as fast leveling in vanilla.

There's QoL and then there's QoL. Like, I in no way whatsoever want a dungeon finder. A big part of the game to me was knowing where things were and actually going out to them. The dungeons might as well be in another dimension if you just warp to them with dungeon finder. However, basic UI improvements are certainly welcome. The one thing I'm fuzzy on is dual spec. That would be nice to have available in the game, but I can see how it might be along the slippery slope.

Does anyone know which version of WoW classic will emulate? Like, is it 1.0 or 1.14, or...? Playing hunter is considerably less attractive if it's before the class overhaul from 1.7 when survival was still supposed to be some kind of weird melee tree.

Actually the original was so much better for community building because you had to basically get to know people. Need to go to another continent. Get to know some mages. Meet warlocks to summon you to dungeons. Etc.

Agreed. I came from EverQuest, where you had to group for everything. WoW classic had you group here and there, but even that felt like you were sequestered from the other players...until endgame and you suddenly needed to run 5-mans to be able to raid or do pvp.

Running 5 mans while leveling is way more fun than just soloing all the time. Theres a certain magic to those Vanilla dungeons that they never quite recaptured.

While I'm not going to argue that, the reality is that leveling and then 5-manning is way more efficient. Finding people in the right range to run a dungeon is often an exercise in frustration. Especially when it's not a typical dungeon for your faction, like Razorfen Downs for Alliance.

I'd argue that running 5 mans was super essential in leveling as everyone is those levels for so long that there is always an abundance of people running them which helps you make friends.

I remember sitting there /who region many times just to find warlocks to summon me to instances and such. And this again is how it was more community based then.

This is me. Taken from http://wow.allakhazam.com/wiki/Azuarc's_Leveling_Guide_intro

So that's 109 hours to level 70. Not technically classic, but I also had to do 10 extra levels that were considerably slower than the first 60.

Pretty sure he meant that each level from 60-70 was way slower than any level getting to 60 which would make sense. But TBC did make the 1-60 a lot faster to get through, I'm expecting around a 6 days played time for when I do it.

Even then I am unsure. I think you could easily bang out 68 and 69 in netherstorm doing the quest hub with the ghosts and all the finding drops instant quests in like an hour or so.

Speed leveling was never my thing. I would go out of my way to hit every 5-man as I went (except for the effectively faction specific ones like Stockades). It did take an extra effort to find groups for some of them, but I thought it was worth it for me.

On a level-for-level basis, yes. Collectively, no.

My general rule of thumb was that a level should take (level number)/10 hours.

That one area has a ton of quests, but it would not net you two full levels. It is, in fact, where my leveling guide ends, and with good reason. So I won't try to argue with you that this component of the 60-70 climb isn't a bit faster than the rest, but how fast are you gonna do, say, level 65 when you're out in Bladestorm? (Or 66 or 67 or whenever you get done with Nagrand.)

I'd venture to say that 50-60 could take longer than 60-70. 60-70 the gear jumps were tremendous. You had a bunch of instances centered close to quest areas. You didn't have graveyards that could have you running back for 20 minutes at a time. Mounts weren't a given at the appropriate level in vanilla. Etc. So many zones had a bunch of instances centered with easy to obtain quests for them.

50-60 is more about grinding than it is about questing. If you purely quest, yeah, it takes for freaking ever. You gotta really employ the "kill on the way" tactics in that range. Like, if you're mounting up to go somewhere, you're probably doing it wrong. For 52-54, you basically just make this slow crawl back and forth across the southern half of Eastern Plaguelands from Tirion to LHC and back.

There's a youtuber named PunkRat whose classic WoW content I've been consuming a lot lately. I have a few qualms with it - his jokes never fail to make me cringe and he occasionally goes off on political tangents I don't necessarily care to hear. BUT - when he's strictly talking about the game (which is 85% of the time) I find his content to be really refreshing.

You can tell he's played the game a ton and I just think he gives really useful insight on a lot of aspects of the game. And it's not always the same cookie cutter BS you find in the other top 10 google results.

If anyone knows of a channel with similar content but less cringe, please share. :)

i'm getting super excited about playing this suddenly

I'm thinking Mage.

Honestly I want to play a Warrior, Priest, or Rogue but those are three classes iv put literally thousands of hours into already so I really feel like I should try a class I haven't played. not into Shaman or Druid, can't play Paladin on Horde, and Warlock seems kinda horrible to play with debuff slot limits and soulshards.

So I guess it's between Mage and Hunter? I could go either way but Frost Mages are just so good at like everything, I think that's the one.

Hopped on yesterday and reserved a name for myself and my wife - she's never played vanilla, only Legion/BFA. I expect her to jump on, find Classic mildly unenjoyable, and then she'll never play it again. Although I might get her to try Horde this time, she's stuck exclusively to her Gnome Mage for a while.

I'm definitely going to main a Priest. Vanilla Holy Priest was my favorite back then. Not sure about race. Leaning Troll. Could try Undead, but they're so common, and I much prefer the PvE Berserking racial to Will of the Undead.

What's the difference?

Yes, some people will level rush. That's what they enjoy. I know that if I play, I'll be one of them. That doesn't make the game any less newbie-friendly unless you're playing on a PvP server. And if you're getting ganked for playing on PvP, that's your own damn fault.

It's funny because I somehow got caught up in the rush to reserve my name that I'm generally known by with people I've played with, which is Desuka my Blood Elf Rogue I've mained since Cata

But then I got in there and I thought.... Desuka is my female Blood Elf rogue. I even 3d printed her statue out. Grimmsh is the male Orc Warrior I played in Vanilla, was my secondary in BC, and my main in Wrath. Zokol was my male Undead Priest I mained in BC. I have very definite impressions and memories of all three of them, and playing their class in vanilla or even playing a different class with one of their names doesn't feel right. This is the time to create new memories with a new character.

So I rushed home after work and got into the character creation screen on reserve day all ready to start reserving Desuka.... then decided I didn't want to do that at all and spent like 3 hours trying to think up a name.

I think I'm going with Rylaina the female Troll Mage. It's a combination of Rylai and Lina... the ice and fire sorceresses from dota 2. Feels appropriate for a wow mage.
