The common thinking at that time was that the lakers offer would still stand during the offseason and the celtics could get involved and cause a bidding war, so holding onto AD until more suitors could be involved is hardly a poor decision. And now the lakers have even more capital to throw at them.

Pelicans getting Zion is meh but it's better than a tanking team getting him. Maybe the Pelicans still trade AD to try get a team around Zion in a few years rather than risking AD walking if next year goes badly.
Grizzlies potentially getting Ja Morant is interesting too given they have supposedly been wanting to blow it up and shopping Conley. That salary is a lot to swallow but they may just take a cut price deal on Conley now. Grizzlies didn't tank, they attempted to blow it up but only managed to shift Gasol. They were still trying to win, they just weren't as good. Pelicans started losing because of the Davis situation and not wanting to get him hurt and who knows what happened behind closed doors Lakers started losing more because Lebron and Lonzo got hurt and then moral took a shitter after the whole Davis trade situation. I'm sure they tanked a little towards the end but circumstances definitely played a big part in their downfall. Wizards are a team who phoned it in down the stretch. They got within like a game of the playoffs late in the year and then lost a few key games then somehow ended up with 6th best odds so I can only assume they won virtually no games after that ... I think the Davis situation is more unique than just tanking. If they just sat him for no reason then yes its absolutely tanking. But sitting a player who says he wants to be traded and has massive trade value isn't tanking, it's being sensible as an injury would potentially massively reduce his value.
Tanking teams are the teams that basically roll out their G-league teams and sit all their best players for no reason. Pelicans do not sit Davis if he doesn't ask for a trade / says he won't resign ... Copied to Clipboard!

The Knicks literally didn't have their best player all season thanks to a major injury. What could they have possibly done to be better than they were? Cleveland lost the best player in the league, what could they have possibly done to be better than they were? Why can't teams be allowed to rebuild? Teams have to bottom out, almost every team at some point has to be one of the worst, if not the worst, in the league.
