Absolutely nothing. But the furry community wants it to be so they can attempt to be victims and validate their lifestyle through something that has no connection what so ever.

The fuck are you on about? Your post has no relevance, no-one is trying to play victim here.

lol, that's pretty hilarious!

So, is the purpose of twitter to be a digital platform upon which idiots commit career suicide? As someone who's never used twitter, that seems to be its main purpose.

Anyway, i do wonder where her tweet was originally posted that he saw it to begin with. If it was on a furry discussion, then is he one, too...?

Also, even if the guy didn't have anything to do w/ NASA, I think in general, the approach of "insult someone online and w/o prompting provide information on your place of employment" is a poor life strategy.

But...unfortunately, it sounds like she's getting her job back: http://observer.com/2018/08/nasa-internship-homer-hickam-twitter/

Once he found out that Naomi lost her internship offer, the two connected and apologized to each other.

After talking to her, I am certain she deserves a position in the aerospace industry and Im doing all I can to secure her one that will be better than she lost, Hickam wrote. I have also talked to the folks that had to do with her internship and made absolutely certain that there will be no black mark on her record.

So thanks to Hickam, it looks like Naomis sky (in October and beyond) will be bright. But hopefully shell watch what she says on social media from now on.

Sadly, discrimination is very narrowly defined by law. There are plenty of groups and hobbies that people in them can completely stupidly and unfairly be denied a job over.
Pretty sure I recall reading a few years back about some employers not hiring people who played online video games like WOW. And not "if they mention it in their resume" (who would?) but the employer would like...search for the hiring candidate's online profiles and if it saw s/he was a gamer, no job. Completely legal...

Well, assuming this story is even real (which I hiiiiiiiighly doubt it is)

1.) Why would someone on the NASA council feel compelled to creep on the Twitter page of an intern? That's none of their business.

2.) Why would the intern not have their Twitter set to private? Do people under the age of 40 even know what privacy is or care to have any of it? They would have had to invite the NASA guy on in order for them to read their Twitter feed.

3.) Furry twist is desperate.

Dumb story.

It's an internship. They'll make her push papers, make coffee, and run errands to pick up supplies. Her career at NASA was done before it started, they're just getting some use out of her.

But to legitimately answer your question, I don't know. So many theories why.

Why does the modern world hate natural selection so much?

Honestly it seemed like a pretty weak reason to get fired in the first place. Her "insult" was crude, but really more of an expression of excitement and enthusiasm that she got accepted to NASA in the first place (and one that's not exactly out of place given the general tone of Twitter). It was a stupid thing to do, certainly, but not exactly something I'd consider a fireable offence. Should have warranted a stern talking-to by HR at most.

I think her first post was fine, and if it had been left at that she wouldn't have been fired or at least...shouldn't have been.

But when she fires back that she works at NASA, so suck her [male genitals] (ok...) then that was going too far. Just a really fucking stupid thing to do. Unbelievably stupid.
I'm pro- punishing stupidity.
Plus NASA is a dream job and internships are probably quite competitive. I'd rather some non- dumb ass who barely didn't make the cut got that opportunity instead.

It's an internship. Pissing somebody off is a perfectly valid reason for having it canceled.

Sure it's stupid. I said as much in my post. She was also ridiculously excited that she got her dream job and was speaking in language that's very normal on Twitter. Again, not a fireable offence in my books - an opportunity to have a discussion with HR about "appropriate social media conduct", but not worth terminating an otherwise-valuable employee. Speaking of which:

You know this person based on two Twitter posts they made, whereas the person *whom they insulted* flat-out said that she's an excellent candidate who deserves the position. It's ridiculously over-the-top to assume this person is a "dumb ass" given how little you know about them (and particularly given that they got accepted to NASA in the first place).

By the way, you were in favour of this person losing their job because they insulted someone online and you just insulted someone online. That sensation you're feeling is called "cognitive dissonance"...

Not really...? Given that NASA is trying to attract the best-of-the-best, why on Earth would you discard an otherwise capable candidate for something that petty?

Again, it's not like she went on some racist tear or something; she was excited and she expressed that excitement in a crass remark. And it's worth noting that her firing wasn't even orchestrated by the person she was talking to and that when he found out, he got her her job back. That should immediately highlight that this was an overreaction to a relatively minor breach of protocol.

This woman was admonished and presumably will mind her words a bit more on social media in the future, but will otherwise keep her job. That's exactly what should have happened in the first place.

I've seen plenty of twitter posts linked on here and other sites, of all sorts informal topics. In my experience, that's not "normal language" even for twitter, outside of people outright flaming each other back and forth. Maybe you just hang out in edgier parts of it.

She was a dumb ass. She literally told someone who hadn't even antagonized her, "I work for NASA, so suck my genitals." That's a fair criticism based on her actions.
You're bending yourself into pretzels to try and equate all forms of insult as even remotely equal or unwarranted.
Random guy told her "language" and she immediately snapped back in such a vulgar way, while simultaneously flouting her place of employment as proof of status apparently w/o realizing she was thus making her employer look bad.
I simply called a spade a spade.
Yup, totally the same.

It highlights that Hickam is a very nice person, and basically went to bat for her. Nothing more. He had no involvement in her firing (nor original hiring), felt guilty thinking his involvement lead to her getting fired, and then put in effort to help her.

I don't hang out on Twitter at all. I deliberately stay off social media because it's dumb. That said, I'm exposed to enough tweets and online culture to know that's pretty normal Twitter language.

Ah! Excellent, you figured it out! Now that you've realised that all forms of insult aren't equal, you might realise why I'm arguing that a crass remark said in excitement should not be a fireable offence, because that's pretty low on the "offensive" scale.

You questioned her intelligence based on one Twitter post. If you don't see the issue there, I can't really help you.

Maybe you have different standards than I do, but I certainly wouldn't put my neck on the line for an intern unless I thought they were legitimately good for the company and good at their job. If an intern got fired because of me and I looked into it and discovered they were actually a piece of shit, I wouldn't feel all that put out that they lost their job.
