Vaati is higher up on that list than I'd have expected. Nice to see he hasn't been forgotten about even though he'll never actually happen. Been my most wanted since Brawl.

Being in the stage background definitely means something, even if it isn't definitive.

Black Knight would make a lot of sense as an Ike echo fighter, considering he has the same sword style as Ike and is his rival (which fits with the heroes vs. villains thing in the game). He was also considered popular enough to get a Smash 4 Mii outfit. Something to consider going forward.

Pretty cool, I'm surprised confirmed assist trophies are still doing well, Bomberman is fourth in this one. I guess voters don't care. Most of the top most wanted are expected though there are some surprises in the top 20; Phoenix Wright, Chibi-Robo and Amaterasu

Medusa's VA liked a tweet asking if she was going to be doing anything in Smash Ultimate, then when someone made a tweet pointing out that she liked the tweet she liked that one as well

May not mean anything given that Krystal's VA had advertised she was in Smash 4 but that was just for extra content

But a female villain from one of Sakurai's franchises that is already similar to Palutena and can receive some of the extra moves she lost from smash 4? Yeah I think that's more than plausible

This really isn't that strange at all. Isaac has been one of the most demanded characters since the Brawl days while Sans is from a largely flash-in-the-pan game that nobody's really thought about since it came out. A huge chunk of people voting probably have no idea who Sans is.

Where does this Isaac support come from? He was in one gba game, that wasn't super popular or good. I mean it seems like he is getting in and he'll be interesting to play as, and that's cool. I just don't see how he can pull in that support. I mean where the Pinobee support? What about that guy from boktai warrior?

GS does have a dedicated fanbase that wants more games. I don't know how large it is in comparison to something like F-Zero's fanbase, though.

Anti-voting works because all that needs to happen is that someone needs to have enough of a disdain for a character to consistently vote some rando over them

In a matchup between two randos, there is no clear cut winner, so the distribution between them is going to be pretty random

but between one rando and someone somebody doesn't like, the rando wins

A LOT of people do not like Undertale

This is kind of my (smash) ultimate problem with this poll. The two characters that are most popular with young people are just completely shit on in favor of getting MORE characters to pander to the 30-something base that already got every major character we've ever heard of. Remember that impossible feeling we got when Sonic and Snake was in this crazy awesome fighting game? If we're going to get younger kids to feel this way, we have to give them Steve or Sans (or walugi, since kids love memes) Even if they're not our favorite characters.

and of course, Sans is well known to the general public of kids. I work at a school and I see way more Sans Stickers and backpack patches than I do literally anyone in the top 30 of that poll.

edit: I checked, the ONLY other characters in this poll that I see kids drawing/enjoying/seeming to be general fans of:

In 2010, Guinness World Records found that 94% of US consumers recognized Pac-Man. They also said Pac-Man was more recognizable than Mario. Would you still like to bet that the gap is enough to make up 44 percentage points?

Undertale was impossible to ignore for like half a year and the Smash fanbase is pretty obsessive about analyzing every possible newcomer. There was some dumb Game Theory video that got millions of views where it went "What if Sans is Ness???" and for the rest of the month, every Miiverse drawing was about Sans. The game was recently announced for the Switch and had a trailer showcased in a Direct. I don't think that 80% is at all a high number among the demographic that would be voting in an online Smash poll being thrown around random forums.
