I honestly side with Seph on this one. As many things are there are to dislike about Sessions, things with the Mueller investigation could be a LOT worse if Sessions were to simply cede to Trump's demands.

Is he a PoS for other reasons? Sure. But we can also give some credit when it is in fact due.

It's definitely good that he's not doing more to interfere with the investigation on Trump's behalf, but that's not praiseworthy; it's a base expectation for the job.

The fact that so many in Trump's administration are doing less than the ethical bare minimum doesn't mean we should lower the bar for the rest of them.

I don't get it. Seph's gimmicks aren't even fun.

He went from his last one of "Fuck the poor, as long as I get mine, I just want war and I don't care what it's over because war war WAR!" to his "Patriot!" one overnight without even trying to hide it.

EDIT: Actually, wait. Seph's the one that just starts accusing people of having mental illness if they disagree with him, right. Those hissy fits do actually seem pretty convincing

Don't believe I ever had a day off for that growing up, and I wasn't really aware that was a holiday.

Not underestimating the pettiness and defensiveness of people still celebrating the Confederacy -- I shared the Memphis article recently where Tennessee took away $250,000 from their funding for removing their two statues -- but I'll want to hear more about this situation you're talking about.

EDIT: I dunno if that holiday is Alabama-exclusive or not. My experience is with TN.

Did we discuss the mass shooting in Tennessee yet, where the murderer only had his weapon because his father returned it to him? By which I mean, the guy was at the White House, acted sketchy, and apparently threatening the GOVERNMENT is enough to have his guns taken away. BUT because he wasnt charged with a crime, the guns were given to his father...who just gave the right back. And now four people are dead.

I'm not sure why the father got the attacker's guns in the first place -- I understood he was older than eighteen years old. I also don't know why the father would give the guns back to him after this other than the "kids being kids" defense, but I foresee him getting jailtime for giving those guns back to his son.

4/23/2018
TENNESSEAN - Waffle House shooting: 'Take these weapons of war off the streets,' Nashville Mayor Briley says

"We need comprehensive gun reform to address mass shootings, domestic shootings, accidental shootings and homicides," Briley said at news conference where Metro police, FBI and other law enforcement provided updates on the shooting and search for the suspect, 29-year-old Travis Reinking, who was still at-large Sunday evening.

"If we can all just come together for the greater good, we can take these weapons of war off the streets of our country," Briley said.

[...]

Briley, a progressive Democrat, said, "tragedies like today shouldn't happen" but are "far too frequent." He noted it's been only since September since a gunman entered a church in Antioch and opened fire, killing one and injuring seven others. The incident took place less than two miles from the Waffle House shooting.

Between this and Nashville's previous mayor resigning under pressure from charges and an affair, I don't see the next Democratic campaign going well for Nashville Mayor.

Don't grt me wrong: preach, but they might have to count on the Big Blue Wave (tm) to maintain in the next election.

Also, since I don't guess anybody posted about the shooting at Waffle House, it's worth noting:

1) The shooter was naked outside of a jacket he used to cover himself.

2) A good guy withOUT a gun wrestled the gun away from the attacker and made him run away.

3) Waffle House still beats IHOP -- I'll take my chances.

I haven't read the book.

Overall the election was so close that you can list a bunch of things in which she had and had no control over that may have had an effect. That's what happens when campaigns essentially start about a year before the actual election.

Yeah, the margin in the pivotal state (WI) being less than 1% means that there were many things that could have swung the election (though most of them were spread out over a long enough time that it's hard to isolate the magnitude of the effects, with the notable exception of the Comey letter).

Ironically, not campaigning in MI/WI was not one of those fatal mistakes (it could have been, but Clinton needed PA or FL too and she campaigned extensively in each).

I never faulted Hillary for skipping Michigan/Wisconsin. I fault the political system for making that a necessary move, but her going after PA was the goal she needed to aim for.

In hindsight, some of us got caught up in the excitement when she was trying to swing states like Texas and Georgia. She didn't need to do that, but then, maybe that was a good move in a world where Comey doesn't reopen her case right before the election. We'll never know now.

EDIT: about Michigan, she did push for having a primary debate there in like March 2016 so that's not nothing anyway.

I mean, as far as a per capita system goes, Hillary was wildly successful. She won the popular vote by quite a bit.

And that has to mean something because conservatives have spent a long time trying to convince us that it didn't actually happen - that it was the result of voter fraud.

The electoral college system hurts republican voters, too - there are large swaths of republicans in solid blue states whose votes for president don't matter, either, just because they happen to be within sometimes not well-defined borders. The electoral college is basically nation-wide gerrymandering for no reason.

Of course, making sure that the red voices in blue states are heard means Clinton would be president, which raises the question, is it actually about making sure that the voters in red states have their voices heard, or is it about getting a result you want.

I can't speak for others, but I'm fine with red voices being heard on a national scale.

I live in a very conservative district. My voice matters on a local scale, but as for as the electoral college goes, I don't exist even though I've voted every single time since I turned 18.

I can imagine similar frustrations exist for conservatives in liberal districts. We're opposed, ideologically, but this is one place I want to shake hands with them on. Even if it comes back to bite me in the ass in the future.

I'd rather have my candidate fail because the actual majority of Americans voted against them, than have them fail because of the electoral college.

Campaigning in Arizona/Georgia/Texas made sense in a long term plan for the Democrats. It backfired here, but it can still be a long-term gain if Republicans don't regain their support.

Though as more red states become purple the more common it will be for Democrats to win the popular vote and lose the election.
