Write-Up: Damn, I guess I didn't realize how many Rush songs made it into the ranking but clearly it's more than a few. The beats are starting to improve here a little but I think the fact that I haven't really heard this song before puts some difference between me and the band once again. I get the concept here but the pitch sounds out of whack to my ears in several places. Not sure if it's the vocal pitch or the percussion but something is stressing rather than easing my tension. ====================================

Write-Up: I'm starting to realize that I'm quite selective when it comes to which 70's tunes I appreciate in a way that I'm not so much a 70's fan as much as I am a fan of some 70's music. This tune is alright and sets a specific mood if you are looking for it but the backtrack sounds more 60's to me. I mean it is early 70's so I guess that is a close approximation. I lol'd at the artists' name here as it struck a chord with the immature part of my brain for a moment. ====================================

Had it not been invented in the 70's yet? (Just looked that up btw and nope it hadn't been) Anyway, this was in Guitar Hero III and probably one of the least played songs for me there. I guess it's speculated that his song was inspired by a Black Sabbath song. After listening closely I can kinda see that. ====================================

Well that was an experience. I'd always heard the band was more experimental before they shifted to pop music, but I never actually looked for any of their music from before Phil Collins took over as lead vocalist. I'm not entirely sure how to feel about this song; it's like Chinballz, who I've never interacted with, somehow found a song that checks every box I was even remotely thinking of:
"Oh, you like androgyny, do you? How about Winston Churchill in a dress?!"
"Oh, you like villains? SURPRISE ANTICHRIST! ...Or something."
"You want to nominate a song that's over ten minutes long in its album version? HA! TWENTY MINUTES!""
"You want an excuse to look at songs by musicians you like, but never heard because you don't really listen to music outside of the radio? Here's a song by a band you know well due to their pop music, but have never heard due to not being pop music."
"You have a secret soft spot for nonsensical lyrics? HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!"
And it's like...I, I like every aspect of this separately? But I'm not sure I like them all mushed together like this? It's like three or four different songs thrown together, but.... I guess I like it? Sorta? I definitely need to listen to it a few more times now that I have a better idea of what I'm getting myself into, but... well I'm happy to have had a chance to hear it, either way.
Also glad that I don't have to actually rank this song because I really don't want to assign any type of points to it. It's an experience that defies any rational attempt at scoring it.
Heh, that nuts. To be honest, Supper's Ready is the only Gabriel era Genesis song I've listened to. I always knew it was a thing, but I'm also mostly familiar with the Collins era. I think one day I went "I'm gonna listen to one of their 70's prog songs" and ended up picking Supper's Ready. I really liked it, and nominated it because I wanted someone else's feedback because I agree it does get pretty nonsensical (especially once you factor in Peter Gabriel's costumes). Just have never gotten around to their other albums from the era.
Also, in the nomination topic I clarified the two songs of mine that got dropped, Xerxes and Surf's Up (although it was after your deadline). Xerxes as far as I know doesn't appear on any albums because it's a concert band piece (I didn't know a song had to appear on an album to be eligible). But Surf's Up should have been fine because while it was written in the 60's for the Beach Boys (for an album that never came to fruition), Brian Wilson later re-recorded it as a solo artist in 2004. That's the version I nominated.
...But did you really have to fill my vacant 00's slot with fucking Pitbull? ---
I just dropped in to see what condition my condition was in.

Write-Up: I feel like if you mixed Bruce Springsteen and Meat Loaf you'd wind up with something similar to this. At first I wasn't sure but now I definitely feel like if I were to rank these songs again that this would move up a bit which is good. It's fate is sealed right here this time around though unfortunately for a reason I might reveal later. I do like the piano track and enjoyed the climax of the song and I f'eel like there is a decent message here too. There wasn't much I could track down in the way of customer reviews which hurt the Top 100 score a bit. ====================================

...But did you really have to fill my vacant 00's slot with fucking Pitbull?
It was randomly selected from a leftover pool of songs I had compiled over the last year.
Sorry dude.
The Surf's Up song actually was released on a Beach Boys album in 1971. The album is called "Surf's Up". Therefore the 2004 version was DQ'd since there was a version that qualified for the ranking. ---

Hey, someone else thinks the song is somewhat Springsteen-esque? That's kinda neat.

Breaking Out
I'm sure a lot of people are wondering why I didn't go with "Light Up the Night" as my pick for a song from Act 2: Light Up the Night was DLC for Rock Band 4, they created an entire music video/short film for the song, and it was the first single from the album. Light Up the Night is practically the definitive Protoment song.
As great as that song is, I don't think it stands as well on its own. It has lyrical callbacks to past songs & the significance of Joe and Light meeting is lost without the rest of the album. You need to go back and listen to the first half of the album to hear why Light went into hiding and to get all the music references; then you need Breaking Out to introduce the character of Joe; then after "Light Up the Night", you really need the last two songs to finish the album... and then you should probably just go listen to the entirety of Act 1 (Act 2 is a prequel that leads directly into the first),...
"Breaking Out" doesn't really have that problem. It introduces the character of Joe, an original character and it doesn't rely on knowledge of the lore or story. It easily stands on its own and (while I love the entire album), I don't think you're missing a lot by skipping directly to this track. It also feels like something that could play on the radio: Just a basic story of some guy on a motorcycle rebelling against society. Easy to understand and relate to, definitely the song I would throw out if I had to limit myself to only one Protomen song.
...also it kinda reminds me of Bruce Springsteen, but I don't really know enough about his music to justify that association.
Of course if you read the narration that's meant to go along with the song,then it doesn't work quite as well. Ending with an unidentified old man pointing at the killer robot lurking in the shadows that's about to assassinate Joe? It might make things segue more seamlessly into the next song, but raises way too many questions for the song to be able to work on its own merits any longer. There's a reason I avoided going with a lyric video for it, since I don't think the narration really does anything to help this song.

Write-Up: This song is waaaaay too quiet imo. I had to get some headphones just to hear it clearly and it only amplified how much I think this song sucks. I've never listened to any other Industrial Rock song and couldn't hear it before without headphones. NIN has some great tunes out there so I do not intend to slight the band here but this is kinda dull imo. It climbed the ladder a bit higher than I would have place it on my own since it has generally positive reviews for it though. ====================================

Write-Up: This song sounds like an identity crisis. That hardcore came out of nowhere and I wasn't expecting it at all after the intro. The song isn't exactly terrible but it's not exactly great either imo. I'm not so sure about the back and forth from the ska punk to the hardcore though. It seems that the song should be one or the other if it were to be improved imo. Never heard this band before now though. ====================================

Write-Up: Not to be confused with Bad Reputation by Joan Jett. This song appeared in the Guitar Hero series but I don't remember which one atm. I just remember playing it a few times. It's somewhat recognizable imo but the song really doesn't go anywhere with it's overall melody. The lyrics are not quite fitting for the beats and the singer is obviously not a skilled vocalist. I've heard this tune more than a few times at various bars I've been to over the years though. ====================================

Write-Up: Not the kind of Pop I'm used to. I have to admit though that I really haven't heard a lot of Tears for Fears songs so this easily falls as one of the worst I've heard. It's a lot slower than I was expecting for a pop song tbh. It kind of sounds like a song that should be lower than some of the tunes we've heard so far but it fares ok with the beat, vocals and message. I like when it seems to take off about 4:30 minutes in but it isn't enough to raise the song any higher since the song is nearly over at that point. ====================================

Write-Up: Mmmm..what? These guys are still making music? I had no idea. I'm guessing they just aren't popular enough to make it on the radio anymore since I had no idea they were making music past the 90's. The song is a little jazzy but it's not very catchy imo. Watching the video adds a ton of corniness to this tune imo and that triple high five in the end there is tragically classic to why I now think Adult hanson sucks.lol ====================================

Write-Up: Right off the bat I feel like this has influence from Smashing Pumpkins which is interesting since you nominated one of their songs too Paul. Interestingly enough, I have heard of this band but this is the first song that I know I've heard of theirs. It seems like it is intentionally comical? Is that right? I dunno, it sounds kind of serious also but I wasn't sure since it is one of your nominations after all dude. :P (Sorry for the short write-up but it's the curse of the bottom 300 since they don't start to gain much length until around there.) ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: Not a bad rock song overall but it suffers in a few areas. For one it isn't all that memorable. Really kind of standard for any mediocre 70's song imo. I've never heard of Captain Beyond before but this song could have been from numerous other bands of that time since it kind of follows a rock formula that has been used by many bands of that era. I couldn't find much praise for the band though so maybe they were unable to gain popularity the way I'm sure they probably hoped. ====================================

Hmm. Actually rather a fan of adult Hanson these days, but opinions and all that. And Carly Rae, but I can see how overexposure to their major hit can sour one on them. To each their own. ---
My thesaurus arrived yesterday, but when I opened it it was blank inside. I have no words to describe how angry I am.
It won't just be yours dude. I think a good 200 out of the 300 nominations fall before the Top 1,000.
It unfortunately comes down to the "familiarity score set". In hindsight had I known that I was going to include nominations, I would not have made the scoring system so personal but it wasn't until I had already scored around 800 songs that I decided to include nominations. Therefore nominations were bound to drop like flies.
I didn't want to make a tasteless comparison with a D-day joke about storming the beaches of Normandy... but I guess I just did. ---

No intended slight towards your interests at all dude as I'm not here to bash anyone for what they like. It's just as I stated that my scoring was set up from a personal point of view and caters mostly to stuff that I listen to.

Write-Up: I actually like Kansas.. or now I realize I may just like their popular stuff but I was surprised going into this song that it ended up so low because I honestly thought I liked most of whatever I've heard from the band. This tune is kind of whimsical and full of a variety of instrumental riffs but... yeah, but. I am not entirely thrilled by the song. I love something I automatically start bouncing a knee to but I don't get that at all here. The song feels like it's more than several minutes longer than it actually is for some reason. Could that be my discontent for the song making it last longer? I'm not sure. ====================================

Write-Up: I thought this was something that I had heard before because "Son of Dracula" just looks like something familiar but I guess I haven't because it isn't ringing a bell in it's entirety at all. I do think the vocals and beat are palatable though and this is something I probably wouldn't change the station on too quick if I were to hear it on the radio. I couldn't find very many reviews for it though which is weird for something that has been around since the 70's. I do think that the piano play in the background sort of sounds like another song... maybe from the Carpenters or something. ====================================

Write-Up: There was once a day when I was right into music like this, particularly around the time The Matrix came out. I got hooked on some Prodigy and Rob D after discovering the Matrix's soundtrack in a bargain bin for like $2 or $3 bucks. It was an interesting time for sure. The problem with this kind of music though is that it really appeals much better to a younger ear. The older I get, the more stuff like this sounds like noise. (Oh great it's finally happening! I'm getting oooooooooooooooooolllldd!!) =( ... anyway, I can always appreciate a good classic but this isn't the kind of music you really sing to. It's a decent arrangement and bodes extremely well in the game but you won't find me cruisin down the road with anything like this blaring on the radio. ====================================

==================================== { 1,225th Place } [00's][ 250th Place]@Great_Paul Song: "Rule The World" Band: Walk Off The Earth Album: Sing It All Away ---{ 2015 }--- Genre: Pop Score:[2.2][2.3][4.2][0.3][5.3][4.1][3.3] = [21.7] = [3.1] Video:
Write-Up: Hmm.. welp, I must have been in a cranky mood when I ranked this one. It actually sounds like something that should be a bit higher. Unfortunately it didn't get a bump but the chorus is kinda catchy. I thought this was a One Direction song or something the first time I heard it after this ranking. Kinda surprised that I hadn't heard it before though but tbh I haven't deliberately listened to any station that frequently plays pop songs in the last few years. Pop seems to be a genre that tried to smother the world this decade and it stopped impressing me years ago. ====================================

Write-Up: Raka, your nominations continue to suprise me since I never really knew what kind of music you were in to before but it sure isn't what I could have expected since you are on the other side of the world. Abba is a band that I only am familiar with when it comes to their best songs or I should say most popular really. This one is kinda ok but definitely something I'd skip on the radio. It does have a good following with the fans though. ====================================

Write-Up: Woah, what the f*** is this? Clearly I wasn't listening too close to the lyrics when I ranked this one. It's kinda graphic and I'm surprised there wasn't an age confirmation screen before listening to it on youtube. I had to confirm my age for a Blink-182 video but this is ok??? Anyway, not my kind of song at all and I would not listen to this around the kids. ====================================

==================================== { 1,222nd Place } [70's][ 239th Place]@Bane_Of_Despair Song: "Johnny Blade" Band: Black Sabbath Album: Never Say Die! ---{ 1978 }--- Genre: Heavy Metal Score:[5.1][2.1][4.2][1.2][4.2][2.1][3.3] = [22.2] = [3.171] Video:
Write-Up: I had only heard this song a couple times over the years but I'm not sure I had ever actually listened to the whole thing. I like the drum beat right off the bat though. It isn't overly complicated or even that memorable but it goes well with the guitar riff used through most of the song. Something I always have an issue with is that I can never get fully used to Ozzy's high pitched singing as it doesn't always mesh well with the music Black Sabbath created imo. Of course the dude is pretty much an iconic figure at this point so I don't think many folks feel the same as me but it is what it is. ====================================

==================================== { 1,221st Place } [90's][ 246th Place]@Bane_Of_Despair Song: "To Our Friends In The Great White North" Band: Botch Album: We Are The Romans ---{ 1999 }--- Genre: Metalcore Score:[4.2][4.1][3.2][0.3][4.1][2.2][4.1] = [22.2] = [3.171] Video:
Write-Up: Now this is getting somewhere. It's almost got a good Rage Against the Machine thing going but then 40 seconds in it starts skipping some beats and I get distracted by the yelling again. There are a couple of irregular scales played in the song that are cool and I love the lightning fast Bass Drum around 3:00 minutes in. Other than that there are lots of areas for improvement in the way of catching my attention. Eventually I'm bound to like one of your songs if they keep improving though Bane, I'm sure of it. ====================================

==================================== { 1,220th Place } [00's][ 250th Place]@NFUN Song: "Violent Pornography" Band: System Of A Down Album: Mezmerize ---{ 2005 }--- Genre: Progressive Metal Score:[4.2][3.2][4.1][3.2][3.2][2.2][2.2] = [22.3] = [3.185] Video:
Write-Up: Normally I don't mind System Of A Down but this song gives me anxiety for some reason. It's a bit more chaotic than most of their best songs but the vocals feel right. Some of the beat is decent too so I'm not exactly sure why it raises my blood pressure but I do like the message in the end of the song at least. Not much else to say here unfortunately. ====================================

==================================== { 1,219th Place } [70's][ 238th Place]@Great_Paul Song: "I Don't Like Mondays" Band: The Boomtown Rats Album: The Fine Art of Surfacing ---{ 1979 }--- Genre: New Wave Score:[3.2][2.1][3.2][0.3][4.2][1.2][8.2] = [22.4] = [3.2] Video:
Write-Up: Well this was doing ok up until that awkward sounding chorus. I like the piano play though. The whole song sounds like it hasn't aged well if that were a thing for music, is it? I can almost picture Tom Petty singing this song like in a sarcastic imitating-his-own-voice kind of way. Anyway, not terrible for the first New Wave song to be counted out. There will be plenty of great New Wave classics further on up the list though. ;P ====================================

Write-Up: Another of my picks to pad the bottom of the list that may surprise some of you reading. I never was a very big Kiss fan. My older brother had a Kiss poster on the back of his bedroom door that he used to make a fuss about but I never got it. I didn't understand the appeal of a bunch of Hard Rock dudes going full on face painting in flashy uniforms. My brother seemed to get it though and this song was one of his favorites. I'll give it credit for having a lot of variety that almost blends seamlessly but it just doesn't resonate with me otherwise. And this is just the bottom of my 70's list. ====================================

Write-Up: Damn. Two of mine in a row. I can't remember if this is the first time I have two fall back to back or not but it's gonna start happening more frequently in a hand full of rankings here. This is three 70's down in a row though. I first discovered Nazareth from collecting cassettes as a kid. I think I even had duplicates of this album come to think of it. It's a tune with a somewhat recognizable guitar riff for anyone that has even heard this a couple times. The rest of the song is kind of mild and standard classic rock n' roll imo. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: So... I kinda wished I had bumped this a bit more just for the video. It's so much better with the puppet show but... I didn't include a score for the videos. Anyway let's be honest, this just feels like it isn't a real song and was actually made for the puppets. I do like some of the rhyming but I feel like it was kind of rushed. The chorus is silly and I don't think the song can make any sense without the video. I might not change the radio station if this popped up but you can bet I won't be heading out to buy any MCFrontalot cd's any time soon. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: I like the intro to this song but the rest is a mix up really. I feel like I've also heard this song in a Farrelly brothers movie but can't recall which one.. maybe Me, Myself & Irene? Anyway, the first time I ever had a turntable around '87 or '88, I was given a crate of vinyl from a relative and there was a Utopia record in it. I don't think it was the album in this ranking but that was the first time I was exposed to Utopia. This song has an early 80's vibe so maybe the band was ahead of their time when this album was released. ====================================

==================================== { 1,214th Place } [00's][ 249th Place]@NBIceman Song: "The Haunting (Somewhere In Time)" Band: Kamelot Album: The Black Halo ---{ 2005 }--- Genre: Power Metal Score:[4.2][2.2][4.2][0.3][4.2][3.2][4.2] = [22.5] = [3.214] Video:
Write-Up: Damn... it isn't coming to me atm but this band/song sounds so much like something else I've heard before. The first Power Metal track to get the axe on the list though. The beat, vocals, message and popularity score are all about average imo. I almost feel like this song should have been more epic but was disappointed in that regard after listening to it a few times. Actually... now that I think about it, maybe I heard one of the band's songs on Guitar Hero? (looking it up real quick) ...um yeah, not finding anything but I could have sworn that was where I saw/heard something from the band. It's possible it was DLC but I don't have time to look up a list of those songs atm. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Wow. I rather love that song; not enough to actually listen to the rest of the album (or it's other half, since IIRC The Black Halo was part of a 2-part concept album(s)), but I cared enough to look up all the meanings and read the plot of the other albums so I could properly have context for it.
It's one of the few songs so far that I have a lot of experience with. I randomly stumbled upon it while researching the Dark Champion boss fight from the Sega CD Eternal Champions of all things; someone recorded themselves beating him, but had no audio from the game and had this seemingly arbitrary song in place of it. Didn't make any sense, but I instantly fell in love with the song. I had to rush and actually purchase the song (didn't get the album, but I did purchase the mp3 for...like a buck or something), then look up the music video, the story, and everything else.
...not sure why I never tried anything else by the band. I actually couldn't name any other songs by them until I had to try to quickly find something for the 10's category, deciding "eh, they do concept albums, close enough to The Protomen--ooh, villain song! That works!", but since I wound up not needing that song...
...eh, I still like Veritas too, so it was worth the effort anyway. ---
"That's life. All the trues are false and all the falses are true."-Charlie Brown
Write-Up: A simple beat for the intro and I was digging the lyrics until it went all loud. I forgot for a second that this was Ska. It's a fun song though but unlikely that I'll listen to this more than I need to. There is some Ska I like but most songs that are "deliberately" chaotic tend to lose my favor. I need a good consistant rhythm and melody in order to get lost in a tune so this unfortunately cuts down most Ska. Ska Punk is a genre I didn't realize was a thing until this ranking although I should have known since I listen to a couple other varieties of Punk. (Pop Punk is my favorite) ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: I feel like I should know what game this is from... Ogre Battle? Not sure I've ever played it but some of this song sounds familiar. I think this might actually be our only "Score" entry to the ranking btw. I might be wrong but I can't recall any other songs falling into the genre during my collecting of information over the last year. With nothing lyrical to measure, this and every other Instrumental unfortunately takes a ding to the overall score so that's a bummer. Since I prefer songs I can sing to at the top of my list I guess it doesn't matter too much in the end anyway. ====================================

"Best read of the game goes to se7en. Who correctly surmised this town is full of idiots." - Corrik Se7enthrust ~ Dude_Dexter
Write-Up: I actually found this song to be relaxing in more of a trance kind of way. I'm amazed that I've never heard this before now though. I've listened to some other Cure stuff before but this is an album that I might actually dig into further. The vocals didn't score too high since the only vocals I hear sound more like they were intended to be background vocals but the beat is decent here and I can get a pretty good feeling what the song is trying to convey emotionally. Not a bad tune for sure. ====================================
