Write-Up:
And finally the 3rd song I have selected takes a flying leap. (That'll be the last time I count that down I promise lol) The nominations have been taking a beating as we near the first 50 rankings down but don't worry, it's not over yet! More nominations will continue to drop like flies I'm afraid. It's kind of comical if you think about cramming 300 nominations into a list of 1,000 that were selected from 6,000+ sampled tunes. I guess it only makes sense that nominations would have a tough climb up that list. :P (The Nominator Challenge this time around is looking quite unpredictable atm. I wonder who will win this one?) Anyway... getting back on track, Jethro Tull only appears in this ranking twice. Anyone want to guess what his other song is? The Rock isn't too bad here but I guess the biggest problem with me here is how unfamiliar I am with the artist in general. I don't feel like I really missed out on anything since this album received mostly unfavorable reviews from what I can see.

Write-Up:
Something that I find interesting is that I'm pretty sure I owned this cassette about 20 years ago but I don't recall ever hearing this song. It's possible that I had it in my collection and never listened to it I suppose since I used to collect tapes in bulk and had several hundred before cd's were invented. It's a fair song but I don't think it's noteworthy for any particular reason tbh. This certainly doesn't compare to my favorite tune of theirs (seen later in this ranking) but BOC has always been a band that struggled for popularity so I guess this is no surprise really.

Oh no Droppin Plates and Out of Body were actually BOTH mine!

Coincidentally they're also both songs I saw live last year, and both were awesome

Out of Body you probably cant find much on because it's not only not a single but actually appeared exclusively on the deluxe version of the album.

Fun fact: Kilo Kish toured with Gorillaz, so in addition to doing this song together, they also brought her on to do the female vocals of 19-2000

Dropping Plates is by no means a deep or mature song, but goddamn it's fun. Seeing it live legitimately made me feel like a teenager again

Write-Up:
First of all, I had a hard time getting into the beat here since the vocals are so distracting. It almost sounds like neither go together tbh. The band has a fair following and this seems to be a favorite but I'm not seeing what is so thrilling about this tune at all. I'm no expert on Metalcore but I would guess that this is quite mediocre compared to most. I don't know if this song tells a story or is just meant to be noise but the smallest hurdle a song has to jump for me to have an interest is a basic melody. I can't find one here anywhere. The weirdest thing here though is that I like a couple of the drum beats and I wasn't annoyed after having listened to this several times. Is Metalcore starting to grow on me?

I'm generally an acoustic fan so this tune catches my attention right away but then the lyrics come in and I have to wonder if this is meant to be comedy which makes me take the song less seriously for some reason. It's a fine song really but I don't think I'll need to listen to any of the bands other work if this is what is to be expected. I like a good Blues Rock song but this just isn't in the group of songs that I would consider top tier.

There's certainly elements of comedy throughout that album and on "Trouble", but it's extremely relatable too. "And you wish the world was as tired as you" is such a great and memorable line.

Write-Up:
The intro to this song sounds like something I have strummed before while goofing off which isn't me suggesting that they stole my song :P but that if I could play something like that then it's gotta be awfully easy to do. I've been playing guitar off and on for 12 years and I still feel like I suck lol. Anyway, the beat is ok. But I have to be honest when the vocalist starts to sing It's definitely odd as in, not the rate, tone or pitch I was expecting. Actually... I really don't know what I was expecting. Unfortunately at some point this tune turns into noise for me. I'm listening to these as I rank them with a pretty decent set of headphones but there is still an overwhelming twanginess to this song that is borderline tolerable. It kinda surprises me a little to see that this song has mostly favorable reviews.

Raka... did you just try to hypnotize me? "Close your eyes, close your eyes and your legs" XD (The correct verse is close your eyes, close your eyes and relax) ...but I swear that's all I can hear as this song closes lol. I'll admit, after hearing this a few more times I probably could have justified bumping this higher but... I don't entirely feel like it's necessary this early in the ranking to quibble over something I'm not so sure about. I can clearly see that the internet has raved over this performance but after being an indoctrinated baptist for nearly 20 years, it's honestly meh to me. It could be a religious aversion knocking down the points here tbh but I don't exactly have the extra time to unpack that psychological can of worms. Jesus's voice is magnificent though I gotta say.

Write-Up:
Ye... ee..eaa... eah.. ahhh. I dunno... That 80's backtrack tugs on my interests but man, there are very few Cher songs that I find worth listening to. I won't bulls***, it's her voice. It doesn't work for me. It just sounds too much to my ears like a girl trying hard to imitate a dude trying too hard to imitate a girl... or somewhere in the middle there. There are other female vocalists with deep voices that sound great for sure but only a couple of Cher's songs have the right melody to make me forget that she's not a dude. That sounds really bad and like an a**hole thing to say but what I mean is that I don't feel like she has very many songs where she authentically sings like a woman. (Disclaimer: That statement has nothing to do with her Gender obviously, just her voice.) I am of course admittedly being a hypocrite here as I am a dude and have sung plenty of songs imitating a female vocalist. Sue me. :P

Well that was a much better score than expected... not that I don't highly enjoy the song, I just had incredibly low expectations.

==========================================

Just Like Jesse James

I can't explain why I like this song so much. The lyrics aren't great and they repeat way too often; Cher herself never liked the song; it's not even the best "Cher song from the Heart of Stone" album, to say nothing about the rest of her works. But... I dunno. I still like it anyway.

I have a high bias towards her due to her being some of the only music I was exposed to when I was quite young--if you ever want to hit me with nostalgia try anything of Cher's from before the 90s, Dolly Parton's brief foray into pop music in the 80's, the few songs Placido Domingo released in English, or The Monkees.

...why you would want to throw me on a nostalgia trip is a question I don't have an answer for, but if for some reason you ever need to induce flashbacks, those are pretty good places to start.

[Edit after the topic went up: Well my prophetic dream did not come true. I dreamed that the song in dead last was a Pokemon game song, Goldenrod City I believe, nominated by...someone with a W in their name, Wicklebee maybe? Se7en went on a bit of a rant about how much he hated Game Boy music and resented allowing it in the first place; "Just Like Jesse James" was the second lowest song, with the only write-up being "at least this is actually music".

...though in a way I was sorta close; the lowest song's description did involve Se7en complaining about allowing it in & the first "actual" song to be eliminated was one of mine featuring a song title with a celebrity name in it. Not perfectly accurate, but still a lot more accurate than I would have assumed.]

Write-Up:
Never heard this one before. I was shocked to see that it was from 1998 though because it sounds like it's straight out of the 70's and even Bowie sounds young for some reason. It's an interesting collaboration but I don't really start to jive with the song until 3 minutes in. Great beat from then on though and it's sort of a memorable and perilous sound which is great but 1/4th of a song equals about 1/4th of a score. Supposedly this song is used in an episode of "Queer as folk" but I've never seen the show so I couldn't confirm that.

Hey, finally an excuse to listen to a second Placebo song! I've been mildly curious about the band ever since WWE used their cover of "Running Up That Hill" to hype Shawn Michaels VS The Undertaker, in what might honestly have been the best hype package the company ever made.

Song's not bad. I don't like it as much as the aforementioned song, but I could see it growing on me if I listened to it a few more times and gave it more of a chance.

Teenage Riot was much better than I expected from the name and write-up.

Yeah, you didn't show up during the 3 day "discrepancy" phase to fix the nomination.

I don't remember atm what the issue was (either it wasn't from 00's or I couldn't find it on an album). Either way you didn't show to help resolve the problem and your nomination was auto-filled.

Edit: Oh yeah, I remember. Even though the song was created in 2008/2009 the song wasn't released on an album until 2012 DQ'ing it for the 00's. Sorry dude.

Write-Up:
Getting back into this we jump into a decent 70's tune that I somehow slipped by all my life without ever hearing. I don't mind music from The Who but I don't really go out of my way to hear their work. I had trouble digging up positive stuff about this song but it sounds like something that should have been popular in the 70's for sure. It has sort of an Epic feel to it but I don't feel like there is much story here with the repetitive lyrics. The more I listen to the song though the more it begins to charm me a little but... not quite enough for me to bump it from where it has landed unfortunately.

A double whammy for the 70's and another kick in the chinballz. Sad Wings of Destiny was another cassette tape that I had procured in my collection in the old days that I don't think I ever really paid much attention to and I can't really recall if I ever listened to it honestly. Why would I collect something I had no intentions of listening to? I dunno really, OCD's maybe. Tbh, the only tapes I ever really listened to consistently were from my Weird Al collection. There is some fair shredding going on in this song but nothing really stands out imo.

Damn, if it weren't for the language barrier I might be inclined to rate this higher. Oh, look at that! This video has a translation. Uhh... um, yeah.. I'm still not sure what that was about. There is definitely some sort of love story there from what I can tell but it almost sounds tragic. The beat is fine and I do recall hearing this from Fatal Frame 2 (It's one of my favorite in the survival horror series) but sadly I have only completed the game once. The vocals are ok but multiple listens and they sound more stressed in an annoying way. I went ahead and bumped this a point for the story after re-reading the lyrics. The interpretation I have is that the damsel in distress must have her lover/companion kill her before evil takes her over... or a basic interpretation at least. If anyone else knows something more accurate feel free to share. I'd be curious to see how close I am.

Hey, another Rush song! Did I mention I wasn't much of a fan yet? I suppose this is an ok song but it feels longer than it should be or maybe it's because I'd prefer listening to something else. I'm pretty sure this song was available in Rock Band 3. I've got a friend that played that game all the time and I'm almost positive that is where I've heard it before. The biggest problem I have with this song is the pitch of this dude's voice. Other than that, I have a very short opinion here.

Our first Reggae song that we sha'll cast unto the bottom of the list. There are some decent Reggae songs later on in this ranking that I can't wait to get to but we'll have to do with this one for now. It's a relaxing genre so a lot of the tunes are easy to tolerate but sometimes you get a tune that is just really catchy and Jammin' but this one isn't quite that. I didn't care too much for the movie that inspired this song... or was it the other way around?

I think it comes down to the fact that I didn't have as much exposure to Rush when I was growing up as I did to most of the stuff above it. I tried not to accuse them of being terrible at least.

Write-Up:
I remember watching this movie when I was younger but I didn't recall this song. It's an interesting instrumental that most definitely sounds like it was created in the 80's though. I can actually almost picture vocals in this song as if there could be a lyrical version somewhere in the universe. It's got a good beat and several riffs that are appealing but I'm not sure if knowing that it's made for animation is what makes me not take it more seriously or if it's because I feel like it's incomplete. Either way I'm only mildly impressed.

Gonna be dropping rankings as often as possible today. (I'll be home alone for most of the day so I hope that means my distractions will be limited)

Let's hope I don't crash asleep for the day instead. *crosses fingers

Write-Up:
Not the best Black Sabbath song I've ever heard tbh. I didn't really catch it during nominations but now that I review this song I realize it is three songs back to back to back. Can't complain though since I let the two part Megatron song through. I ranked this as though it was one full song despite overlooking that detail. When I pulled it up on youtube there really wasn't an indication that it was three songs as far as I remember and I only discovered it when I looked at the Album's track list. Why am I over explaining myself here? (Because I really don't have anything else to say about this song.)

Write-Up:
I wonder if you thought the length of this song was going to win me over NBI? It's unfortunately quite the opposite dude. This is so unnecessarily long imo. It feels like it is never going to end except at like 6:00 and 13:00 minutes in where you think it ended but then it keeps on going. This honestly doesn't even sound like a real song. It sounds like they were just playing around with their instruments and happened to be recording. The pacing is godawful and is that a bunch of religious stuff I'm hearing in the lyrics? There was one riff that I found catchy but that was pretty much it. Another Rush bites the dust!

Write-Up:
Um... This is an interesting nomination in that the first time I listened to it I scored it higher but after multiple listens it actually began to lose points. There really weren't a lot of songs that I've "demoted" from further review but here we are with one of them. I feel like the Fresh Prince of Bel Air should be singing this tune. I don't think I'd be able to successfully tell you which parts of this song are the beginning, middle and end since the whole thing maintains the same consistent and sort of monotonous beat. The lyrics aren't all that memorable imo.

I sort of feel like this one might be out of place but we haven't hit the first 100 songs down so it still feels right after all I guess. It isn't an amazing song or anything but I can see this being popular in a bar setting somewhere. Is "Lip Service" supposed to mean what I think it means? Anyway, I don't think i'm much of a Jimmy Buffet fan tbh. This isn't the kind of song I like to listen to in 99.5% of the time I want to listen to music. It's got a basic rock beat and there isn't much to the guitar riffs to get excited about. I was a little surprised to see this nomination come from Snake. It sounds like a side of you, I didn't know you had dude. :P

Not the Hip Hop I tend to like as you'll see when we get to the Hip Hop I've selected for the top part of this ranking.

Hip Hop can be much deeper and offer more variety. If I were to compare the difference, I'd call concrete schoolyard "lazy" hip hop.

true, i shouldn't say "emblematic" as there are definitely hip hop acts who get more creative with their beats. i will say that in hip hop the focus is on the lyrics so usually they're not rapping over crazy guitar solos or whatever, as that would distract from the lyrics too much. but yeah, i see your point about some hip hop having more complex beats (and it's fair that you prefer that kind).

This actually isn't true at all. It just has to be the right kind of Hip Hop.

I'm not a fan of the stuff that sounds like open mic night or rap battles for the most part.

Ah yes, I remember this from the Guitar Hero DS game that I bought and played once. Not so much because it was a terrible game but because I never really played with my DS. (Hahah.lol) ...And I just realized, oddly and coincidentally enough that it's because it wasn't my Gameboy. (which i'm hopelessly addicted to) This tune is fun but it sounds so much like the stuff that I used to play in that one PS2 game that no one wanted but everyone who actually played it loved called "Frequency". Problem is, I had played so much of that game that I don't find this sort of melody mix-up appealing anymore. Why? 'Cause it makes me feel overly anxious that's why. See, Frequency was an easy game to play but it took some skill to master and with my obsessive compulsive nature I had to conquer that friggin' game. Let's just say there were a couple tunes that were beyond ridiculous and scarred me for life.lol
