{ 1,210th Place } [80's][ 243rd Place] @IhatethisCPU
Song: "Shot Through The Heart"
Band: Bon Jovi
Album: Slippery When Wet

Genre: Hard Rock
Score:[3.2][3.2][4.1][3.2][5.1][2.1][2.2] = [23.1] = [3.3]

Write-Up:
...and you're too vain! Oh, wrong song lol. It's kind of funny how many people think this is an incorrectly titled "You give love a bad name" when both songs are on the same album. This is far from my favorite Bon Jovi tune though. I don't mind it but there isn't anything lasting for me here when I'm holding the bar on this band at "It's my life" at the very least. This song's counterpart is leagues beyond this song imo.

{ 1,209th Place } [70's][ 234th Place]
Song: "Angie"
Band: The Rolling Stones
Album: Goats Head Soup

Write-Up:
It is true that if I had included the 60's, The Rolling Stones would have taken the win with "Paint It Black". One would think that I had a strong affinity for the band in that case but that actually isn't quite true. I enjoy a few of their songs like most I'm sure but they have a lot of mediocre stuff so you have to pick through for the great songs. With this being the first Rolling Stone song to drop from this ranking you can kind of get an idea of where I start to tune into their stuff. Something neat about this song is that Keith Richards has stated it was inspired by his baby daughter Dandelion Angela but the song came out before he even chose a name for her and before he even knew that he was having a girl. I wonder how that works exactly.

Write-Up:
Never heard anything from this band before this ranking. Gotta be honest I wasn't immediately drawn into this song at all though but after a few listens it settles in as something I might listen to once in awhile on the radio. These girls seem to have a growing popularity but they are also fairly new to the music scene so I can see them having some better hits as time goes on. One critic on the internet claims that the band has a mild influence from bands like The Eagles, Tom Petty and Fleetwood Mac but I didn't really hear any of that in this song tbh.

I totally thought this came out in the 80's when I added it to the list. Something about this song bugs me even though it was dubbed one of the top 500 greatest songs of all time by Rolling Stone magazine. It even made it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as one of the 500 songs that shaped rock n' roll. But... I'm not feeling it still. There are way better Springsteen songs imo.

Well I guess we have a clear Band leader for number of songs in the ranking. Too bad they are all in the bottom 100 so far. Believe it or not there is still more to come from this band though and from what I've ranked so far there are some significant improvements here. I like the beat and am more familiar with this song since it was one of the few Rush songs my older brother used to play all the time on his floor model stereo system when I was a youngin'. I can also see a bit more fan support stacking up for the Rush songs selected here and going forward.

This song was one of the last songs I chose for the 2010's after I had to DQ a couple songs in the final phase of ranking for that list. In hindsight there were definitely some better songs out there but I was pulled in by the video which is pretty cool on it's own. Obviously I didn't allow for a song to gain points based on the video but the beat is good and the song has received mostly positive reviews from what I could find. There are a couple of Stone Sour songs I really, really like that you'll see eventually.

Write-Up:
Meh... not really into a lot of the pop songs from this decade tbh. Other people seem to like them though so that's why some of them made it onto this list. Truth be told only 100 or so songs from the 10's selected for this list are even tunes that I prefer. I had so much trouble finding stuff I liked in this decade that I resorted to listing many Top 40 contenders despite the fact that I'd probably rank them low. I also didn't have very much overflow of songs as you can imagine so it became slightly frustrating when I had to come up with replacement songs. This is the first and possibly the only song I have classified as "Soul Pop" in this ranking.

So here is a statement that will damage my credibility with some of you. I don't really care for much of Michael Jackson's music. Never have. Don't know why. Probably never will. I'd be surprised if I actually included more than 3 of his songs in this entire contest. Now, I can certainly recognize his ability to make some serious beats but I often find myself only satisfied with parts of his work. Liking half or parts of a song isn't usually enough to get excited about imo. This song, for example, starts out well and then we get about 1:00 minute in to Jackson's over vocalized and awkward sounding chorus. Oddly enough, I didn't find a whole lot of other folks praising this song either in my research.

I don't mind a good House tune every now and then but I think you have to be in the right mood for it. There is a good chance that while I was ranking this song... I wasn't in the mood. It's got some good reverb going but this is another example of a chorus that disrupts a good rhythm imo. I did trail off and listen to a few of Moloko's other songs since I hadn't heard them before and I gotta say, you chose one of the better ones. There does seem to be a good amount of support for the band though so... what do I know.lol

{ 1,201st Place } [10's][ 239th Place]
Song: "22"
Band: Taylor Swift
Album: Red

Write-Up:
So I have a weird feeling about Taylor Swift... and it's not in my pants. Some of her music I think is fantastic but then some of it I completely think is mediocre. This definitely isn't as mediocre as I make it out to be but I don't have an ear for it unfortunately. Does being half deaf have anything to do with that? Maybe. I guess one positive way to view my position on this song is that I don't hold it to the same standards as her most popular stuff which isn't to say that it is terrible, but that it just isn't as good as the songs I like. While tolerable of course, this song sounds more like disc-filler to me also. There is something obvious about it that says it isn't the best song on the album imo.

Write-Up:
This sounds like a really sad song and I'm not entirely sure I understand it but I kind of feel bad that I haven't bumped it higher for the vocals. At first I wasn't really hearing it but after a couple listens the sensitivity used in each verse is really kind of heart-warming. If I ever get really depressed I'll probably look this song up since it seems like it could draw out some emotion. The piano play is cool but it doesn't really grab my attention like I thought it should. It's possible that is because the piano disappears behind the rest of the song for the most part or at least for me I forgot it was even there a couple of times because of the vocals.

Write-Up:
Pretty sure this was included in one of the GTA games. I definitely feel like I've been speeding around completing missions and such with this in the background. As a matter of fact it was a golf course mission that comes to mind so this has to be from Vice City. It isn't too bad of a beat but it's rather dull overall and not very exciting. I've heard it a few times growing up but never really took notice like you would to a Top 40 hit or something.

I wanna say this was in Kung-Fu Chaos which used to be one of my favorite original Xbox games but it could just sound awfully close to the type of music used in the game. I think the more popular version was done a couple years after this one by Glen Campbell but I don't have a strong preference either way. Glens version of the song appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and regained some popularity for the tune. It's ok but I wouldn't go out of my way to hear it.

Best Version IMO:
Glen Campbell - Southern Nights - 1977

Hey, our first Country tune to make an appearance in the ranking. Never heard this song before but it sounds like a classic. Too bad I don't really listen to a lot of country. There once was a time when I did live in the country though and this type of music is all that could be heard on every local station. I kinda do like the beat though. It's soft and simple but it sounds quite melancholic which is always a favorite theme of mine. The vocals are good and I really get the sincerity in the message through the melody.

Oh, Stranger in Moscow... this is a complicated one. The lyrics came from a poem that Michael wrote at the height of the child abuse accusations and... well I'm not going to get into those as that is way too heavy a topic for me to get into, even if this topic were a place suited for it (which it isn't). Let's just say I appreciate the chance to listen to some of his feelings from the time and leave it at that.

What actually drew me to the song wasn't the lyrics, or even really the song itself--it was the mysterious connection between Michael Jackson and Sonic 3, best exemplified in this song. While internet detectives would find a lot of similarities in Sonic 3's soundtrack to MJ's work, the most damning aspect was that "Stranger in Moscow" sounded similar in parts to Sonic 3's credits theme:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55rtX4wCJPM" data-time="

And there were so many questions at the time! Did Michael Jackson work on Sonic the Hedgehog 3's soundtrack? Could the similarities just be a coincidence? If they weren't, then which song actually came first? Since the lyrics to the song were written before Sonic 3's release, could the ending theme be...like...a demo version of the song or something?

Truly, one of gaming's greatest mysteries.

...

...until I decided to do research to do this write-up and, funny story, we kinda...sorta...have confirmation now?

http://www.mtv.com/news/1627664/did-michael-jackson-compose-sonic-the-hedgehog-3-soundtrack/

Buxer also told the magazine that some of the music he and Jackson composed for "Sonic 3" actually ended up being featured on MJ's 1995 double album, HIStory, in particular on a song called "Stranger in Moscow."

"Yes, Michael and I had composed those chords for the game," Buxer said. "And it has been used as a base for 'Stranger in Moscow.' "

Which kinda makes things awkward now. I may have known that the songs were similar when I nominated it, but I didn't know we had official confirmation until after nominations had closed... eh heh... heh... *sighs*

In my defense, as far as I can tell, Sonic 3's soundtrack never had a disc release. There was an album called "Sonic & Knuckles - Sonic the Hedgehog 3", but the only songs on it were from S&K; so even if there was an argument on if this should count as a cover of the song, Stranger in Moscow is the only one with an album release to qualify in the first place.

...also I'm not entirely sure an artist could be accused of doing a cover of their own songs? Or if this is even so much a remake as it is "an artist using the same chords they used on a different song"? It's...it's complicated, is what I'm saying, and I probably would have brought all this up earlier if I had known about the confirmation ahead of time.

Aaanywho...

Not one of his more popular tracks, no. The previously mentioned accusations did some severe damage to his career, which I think limits how much fame his late 90's work could get (though I'll admit I'm not too well versed on his music to know if he managed to get a hit in that time period); and while I like the song, it is decidedly slower and less pop-ish than people would expect from him.

...Well that and I suspect "people who want to listen to Michael Jackson read poetry about how sad the accusations made him feel while Sonic music plays in the background" is a category that only applies to me and no one else in this dimension.

stranger in moscow is one of michael jackson's best songs imo.

interestingly, according to wikipedia it made #6 on the charts here in the netherlands, but in the US it didn't get further than #91. wonder what the reason for that discrepancy is. (perhaps over here we didn't care all that much about the accusations, or we just didn't know about them at the time?)

Hey, someone else likes the song! That's actually good to hear... I've never really heard any talk of it, outside of certain Sonic related conversations (and those tended to be more about the similarities than how good the song(s) were). And I'm kinda glad that it was actually a hit somewhere! Thank you.

This Woman's Work

Full disclosure, I have no idea why I nominated this. I wanted to nominate something from The Sensual World album and was having a hard time deciding which one:

The title track? It's an obvious choice and there's a lot to be said about it. Originally it had completely different lyrics, but for legal reasons, Kate Bush couldn't release the true version of the song until 2011. Great story, very much worth reading about and listening to the 80s version and "Flower of the Mountain", the 2011 remake with the original lyrics.

"Deeper Understanding"? That's one of my go-to songs when I want to pretend I have more varied musical interests than I actually do and the lyrics, describing a lonely person becoming obsessed with a computer, are even more relevant now than when they were written.

"Never Be Mine"? It's a bit more generic than the other options, but I also enjoy it. "I want you as the dream, not the reality" might be my favorite lyric on the entire album.

"Rocket's Tail"? A bit of a joke nomination, but it was always my mother's favorite Kate Bush song and there is something funny about her crazed laughter for the chorus. Not too bad of a pick.

[Later Edit: In retrospect, Rocket's Tail definitely would have gotten a lower score than Babooshka, so we dodged a bullet on that one.]

What about "The Fog"? I never really "got" that one, but it's unique even by Kate Bush standards. Also, in retrospect, I did have a bit of a "spoken word" gimmick going with "Once in a Lifetime" and "I Feel Better Than James Brown" and The Fog does have some spoken word parts. It's way down the list of songs from the album I'd normally nominate, but I could certainly see myself backing it.

And somehow I wound up...not going with any of them? Where the heck did this song come from? Why did I get the name wrong when nominating it? But...uhh...here we are, I guess?

Soo... "This Woman's Work". It's...nice, I suppose. A man's perspective on his wife going through a difficult childbirth. Not a subject matter I want to talk about, so... I won't! Let's go with an unrelated and somewhat embarassing story:

...in another post because this is too long to fit into one. I may have overdid this write-up, just a tad...

The first time I heard this song was while I was playing Persona 3. For reasons I don't care to get into, I was playing with the game on mute to avoid waking up someone sleeping in the next room and had an mp3 player on random shuffle for music while playing. I'm not entirely sure where this song came from then either (I suppose I must have just put the entire album onto the player instead of just "A Deeper Understanding", the only Kate Bush song I knew and liked at the time), but... I think it kinda worked.

*MASSIVE PERSONA 3 SPOILERS FOLLOW*

So at the end of the game, your hero sacrifices himself to seal away the SUPER ULTIMATE FINAL BOSS; in doing so, everyone loses their memories about what happened and he loses almost all of his strength, barely clinging to life. After giving his final farewells to everyone, he meets Aigis; an android, one of the other party members and the only other person who knows what really happened. While you could romance many characters (and I believe I had the main character romance every girl available), you couldn't really hang out with Aigis in the original version. He may have hit on everyone, but in the end, the girl he never really considered is the only one to be there in his final moments.

She embraces him as he passes away in her arms... and then THIS SONG that I had never heard before came on my player. And maybe I was too tired to be thinking clearly, but it just...worked.

Ooh, it's hard on the man
Now his part is over
Now starts the craft of the Father

Yeah, it's over--in the sense that the game is over, but also in the "I'm dead now" sense. </.<

I know you've got a little life in you yet
I know you've got a lot of strength left

While he basically died a month ago, he's been clinging to the faintest shred of life forever and Aigis refuses to accept the death.

I should be crying, but I just can't let it show

I imagine it's pretty hard for an android to cry.

I should be hoping, but I can't stop thinking
Of all the things I should've said
That I never said
All the things we should've done
Though we never did
All the things I should've given
But I didn't
Oh, darling, make it go
Make it go away

Holding him as he fades away, wishing they could have been together... but it's too late now.

...like, I have no idea what the actual credits theme of Persona 3 is, but this song worked better than it had any right to. Maybe I nominated it just to share this story? *shrugs* Who knows.

I know the song isn't actually related and that I was reading weird things into it due to the bizarre timing of my hearing it and/or sleep depravation. But now, as embarassing as it is, the song and game are permanently linked in my mind. I can't hear the song without game flashbacks, nor can I play the game without thinking of this song.

Write-Up:
Some decent guitar play going into this song. It's slightly gothic but almost all 80's metal in a figurative kind of way. Obviously it's literally 80's metal but hopefully that makes sense. If I were to have had no idea what decade this was from, I would have said the 80's is what I'm redundantly getting at. Anyway, I've seen plenty of promotional material for this band over the years but have barely heard much from them. Not sure I was ever specifically disinterested but I just didn't shop their section at the record store partially resulting in my lack of experience with them.

Write-Up:
I used to work with a dude at a retail warehouse and he obsessively played stuff by Deep Purple on an old half busted cd-boombox. One of the speakers was slightly damaged so it had a tiny static bend to anything that it played. This song forced that static sound into new heights and made everyone in the room quite aware that the damn thing was broken amd yet no one ever shut the friggin' thing off. I'm serious lol, the damn fools in the room would let it play as if there was nothing wrong at all. Anyway, I tell you that story so you have a better understanding of my disinterest in anything Deep Purple. This has a decent beat but I feel like the song doesn't truly find itself if it is ever a living thing and doing some soul searching. What I mean to say is that I feel like there could have been two or three songs bouncing around between David Coverdale and Ritchie Blackmore when they created this tune.

Ok. Ok... this is different. I'm sucked into the 80's nostalgia but deep down I'm conflicting with my subjectivity. It's funny and awkward in a charming way (I see you) but... I've never heard this tune before and I'm afraid to like it. Great beat with no argument but the lyrics drag it down with the hightened amount of quirkiness. No normal person would take this song seriously and who could I listen to it on the radio with? I don't know anyone in my personal life that is gonna let me get away with letting this one play. I do get the joke here though and it's obvious the creators had fun with it.

I'm surprised that it didn't land at the very bottom of the 1,000 songs I selected to be a part of this. I'm not the biggest Disco fan to begin with so it takes a certain kind of Disco song to get my attention and this isn't it. The beat is mild but everything else is way below standard for me.

Speaking as a fan of Rod Stewart's greatest hits (though, as usual, I've never bothered checking out any non-Greatest Hits albums or looking into his more obscure songs), I wasn't aware anyone liked that song un-ironically.

Centipede... I had a really long, rambling nonsensical gibberish post for it, but I'll edit myself to the few parts that are actually about the song:

In spite of their (hopefully intentional) cheesiness, I actually do enjoy a few songs from the Pac-Man Fever album. "Ode To A Centipede" is probably the catchiest song they ever did, but it's held back by the completely ludicrous spoken word sections--like they accidentally made a good song, then had to go out of their way to ruin it.

I told myself to avoid joke nominations, but I gave myself one exception and I couldn't pass up the chance to get more video game references in and the song's always good for a cheap laugh. It's cheesy and ridiculous, but it's the only song on the album that I listen to on a regular basis; it even amused me so much that when I saw a Centipede figure on sale at the book store (Funko has a line of arcade minis), I couldn't resist buying it as a memento of the game, the song, and this ludicrous waste of a nom. It might be a joke, but it's a joke that amuses me and I have no regrets about nominating it.

*notices the poor song got stuck on Bane's list*

...alright, maybe I feel slightly bad about that part. </.<

Fair enough! I'm not really one to judge anyway.

I'll try listening to that next time I'm looking for a new album. Are there any particular songs from it you'd want me to listen to?

Also, finally caught up listening to everything posted in the topic so far. I was very pleasantly surprised by Stoop Sale, which has been getting stuck in my head the past couple days. Though more than the song itself, I'm happy that the Suggested Videos tab pointed out that MC Frontalot did a Voltron parody and knowing that there's an animated music video Voltron parody on YouTube has made my life so much happier.

I'll be totally honest here, there isn't much that I like from Motorhead. I do like their version of Metallica's Enter Sandman though but other than that I can't think of much else that comes to mind. This song sounds like it is much older than it is to me for some reason. I honestly thought it was from the early 80's. I want to say the whole song sounds kind of amateur-ish but I'm not sure anyone would know what I mean. I'm almost pretty sure this song was featured in the movie Airheads but it's been awhile since I've seen it so I'm not necessarily confirming that here.

Nirvana's Bleach is a full-on punk album to me, and I think there's varying degrees of punk in Nevermind but less-so in In Utero. If not always strictly musically punk, the themes, attitude, and ideas of punk are always present in the music of Nirvana.

I think grunge's biggest roots is a combination of heavy metal and punk rock though, with bands like Soundgarden and Alice in Chains leaning more towards the former.
