I had thought about it but I may either Edit them to be smaller or move to every 50 rankings instead.

I may also edit out the P'ing if that is what you were getting at. Once everyone tags the topic (hopefully) then they shouldn't need notifications other than when one of their songs is ranked.

You don't get pings anyway when they're in quotes, I think what John is getting at is that it breaks up the pacing a bit too much.

Anyway, I love the storyline in Babooshka, it's tragically ironic. Kate's great performance and pronunciation really drives the point home too as it builds up tension in the verses. Gotta love the glass break effect too.

It's something I'm deciding on atm.

I think smaller updates could be less distracting but I do prefer steady statistical updates because I like to see how the numbers change over time.

For this ranking in particular I think it's fun to try and predict which decade or year will come out on top. It's one thing I have no idea about atm since I didn't run those type of calculations during the stacking process.

I have no plans to slow down the pacing of the ranking as far as how often new rankings are delivered so hopefully that keeps the topic moving along nicely either way.

*skipping ahead a bit, will listen to other songs when time permits*

Someone besides me nominated a Kate Bush song? That's amazing! I've only heard her work on The Sensual World album & the Director's Cut EP--the latter only because she was finally able to release the original lyrics to The Sensual World's title track--so I'm grateful for an excuse to check out some of her other work.

*listens*

That's Kate Bush alright. I like it (current top four songs that were new to me: TIME > Babooshka > Damascus > Mr. Cairo), but... well, let's just say I'm not surprised by the reaction. She's a bit of an acquired taste, which is why I didn't push my luck by nominating multiple songs by her.

I'm personally enjoying all the stat updates. Months from now, I'll likely enjoy going back through and seeing the change over time.

Also, 93 til Infinity is my favorite of that batch. Never heard it before, but it feels so chill (from 93 til).

Um... Not a song I am comfortable listening to at home for sure with kids around. Hell this one even makes me uncomfortable when I'm by myself. I honestly can't say I've even listened to a whole lot of Hardcore Punk and if this song is an indicator of how brash it is then maybe that's why I've avoided it most of my life. I warn you all that this song is a little explicit by the end. I mean, I'm no prude but this is kinda over the top and in your face with the sexual overtones. It's got a beat but it isn't too redeeming for the other issues I have with the song unfortunately.

Damn Bane. I totally get your demeanor now if this is what you are listening to all the time. I don't really know what the song is about but do I really need to know since it's clear the artists' main intention isn't to be understood? (I know that is a foolish statement based on a personal feeling but...) This is such an angry song and it's not only raised my blood pressure since I've been listening to it but I'm starting to feel kinda anxious. Under all the incomprehensible screaming there is a pretty serious drumbeat that I don't mind here though. The band also has a fair amount of praise from it's fanbase so that's a plus too I suppose. Anyway, moving on...

Totally the polar opposite from the last song but here is a fun bouncy ditty. It's a simple song where the artist explains the origin and history of her name as she makes her way through life. It isn't something I would listen to on a regular basis but the video improves the experience a little bit. I couldn't help but bounce my head whimsically after listening to this song several times in a row and now I'm embarrassed that I've admitted that to you all.lol

Once again though, it isn't so much that these songs are terrible but that I had spent so much time building a list based on a set of personally objective factors. It is however, a song that I can see rising on the list if I were to ever do a music ranking like this again (which I won't). It's funny because I can recall in the 90's hearing some praise over a band called "Bjork" but I don't think I ever actually heard any of their music... or maybe there is a more popular tune of theirs I've heard that actually became popular on the radio?

One of my old high school friends that I haven't seen in awhile used to listen to Hip Hop a lot back in the 90's and I think this would be right up his alley this day and age. Last time I saw him he was still listening to this sort of music anyway. I actually think the beat and vocals set a decent tone for the song but I had trouble finding very many positive reviews for it online. I have heard of the band before but this is the first time I've ever listened to one of their tracks tbh. I've only recently been more open to Hip Hop in my life and it really all comes down to the beat and rhythm of the song.

So... we are moving in the right direction I guess. This song is better than the previous Metalcore songs for a couple reasons but the main one being that there isn't an overwhelming amount of vocal content this time and we actually get to jam to the beat for a minute. I still have no idea what they are saying but I'm guessing that might be the point of this brand of song? Kind of a brutal video though. Code Orange seems to be a trending band atm on the Metalcore scene though so that's something.

Meh. There are much better Pop songs really. I don't think this is a bad tune but it doesn't excite me very much. It's nothing I'd sing to on a normal basis though. I can see it's potential now that I'm throwing it up officially but I don't think there is enough to justify bumping it in this ranking. I might be launching a little bias there against Carly because of that f***ing "call me maybe" song that drove me nuts when it became popular.

The last ranking I'm gonna do tonight and coincidentally the first to fall from the list of songs that I made. Let me get this right out of the way though... I'm not much of a Rush fan. I got friends that swore by this band back in the day but it isn't one that ever caught on with me. The song here is indisputably a classic but it doesn't sound like enough to me. It feels like it's missing a catchy riff or two but who am I to judge really. I've never made and published a full song before. There are some more Rush songs to come your way for sure but out of the ones I selected, this one is my least favorite.

Well, in the words of David Bowie.. "It's alright". Not as great as "Ziggy Stardust" but it's got a classic beat and those famous Bowie vocals of course. This tune is a bit on the slow side that I don't care for but I do like the piano play. I'm a bit surprised that I had never heard of this song before this ranking though since I'm quite familiar with Ziggy Stardust. If you really listen to the song you'll discover that it's not about a lady at all. The internet says that the song alludes to one of his good friends Marc Bolan who died at the age of 29. Marc was considered one of the pioneers to Glam Rock and was in the band T-Rex.

Lady Stardust

I really didn't get the Ziggy Stardust album the first time I tried listening to it. I'm not even entirely sure why I decided to get into the album; I don't think I'd ever listened to a complete album that wasn't either a soundtrack to something, a greatest hits compilation, or some novelty album before this one. But somehow, I decided to make this my first true album.

Wasn't a fan, not at first. I couldn't follow what the story was supposed to be (and I'm no longer convinced that there even is a story) and it just wasn't working for me... until this song. This was the moment that I fell in love with the album and became a fan of David Bowie--well sorta; I love his greatest hits, this album, and The Next Day... never heard anything else. I should probably do something about that, but I'm getting off topic.

Really, I'm rather drawn to androgynous or gender flipped characters and have been for my entire life. This song fully embraces it. It had me from the first verse. I had to go back and relisten to the entire album, scouring the internet for theories on what it all meant and symbolized. I was completely drawn in.

...of course the write-up for "Starman" soured me on the entire experience (in the likely event that song hasn't had its write-up posted at the time this one has, then just know I'll get into that later), but listening to this song again...*contented sigh*

Possibly my favorite track that I nominated. It's between this and "The Stand (Man or Machine)", depending on what I feel like listening to at the time.

Never heard this one before but it's rather underwhelming for a 12 minute progressive rock song. It sort of sounds like it meanders along the way with no idea where it wants to end up. Progressive music is usually one of my favorite genres because I like how multiple parts of a song can come together and tell a story melodically but here it isn't until around 10:30 in where I feel the song culminates into anything worthwhile. Overall this song is quite forgettable tbh.

I kinda dig the beat & rhythm here and the vocals aren't too bad either. The instrumentation of the main riff is a little catchy but sharp in contrast to the rest of the song imo. You know, if you took the vocals out of this song it almosts sounds like something Metallica would have come up with in their early days. It's a bit too satanic for my taste though but the beat is steady and I can certainly understand how Trash fans can appreciate this song. I don't feel like the vocals are on par with the tune and the whole song has a "garage" feel to it as though this is perhaps the bands early work? *Checks internet... hmm, it's their 2nd album but about half way through their career. Oh cool this is interesting, apparently the album this song is on was so influential to the Thrash community that it spawned the sub-genre "Black Metal". Neato.

Was there supposed to be a significant difference between the Live and Album versions of this song? I couldn't tell much difference personally other than the album version lasting a little bit longer. Anyway, this is the first song from the Heavy Metal genre to take a nosedive. I unfortunately already knew it'd land pretty low on the overall ranking when it was nominated since I'm not the greatest Slipknot fan. I do like myself some certain kinds of heavy metal so it isn't that but there is something about this band that usually turns me off; oh yeah, they're scary as f*** lol. I had a buddy in high school though that used to carry around a cd case that was peppered with stuff like this. He was actually responsible for some of the earliest exposure I had to heavy metal as a kid. Some good and some bad.

I nominated the Live version because that is one of the handful of Slipknot songs that's really meant to be heard live. It's supposed to feel really heavy and overwhelming and kind of make you want to smash shit.

Fun fact: Whenever I steel my knives at work, I find myself doing it to the exact tempo of CUT CUT CUT ME UP AND FUCK FUCK FUCK ME UP

Edit: Also, seen Slipknot twice now and they definitely put on a hell of a live show pretty unlike any other metal band I've seen

I'm shocked, but I actually kinda like Sacrifice. Partly because the person who uploaded the video got the lyrics hilariously wrong:

sacrifice to Lucifer my master
bring the calico raise the knife

And the concept of him ordering his followers bring him a cat to oversee the ritual is objectively amazing and I think we should all take a moment to think of how much better the universe would be if those were the correct lyrics.

Also, I just like over-the-top villain songs. Satanic cults aren't really my first choice for villains, but it's catchy enough that I have a generally positive view of the song.

Maybe that's when the acid kicked in while the band was jamming out this tune? I thought the illustrated video for this song would shed some light but that ends up weird too. The song has received mostly mixed reviews from what I can see but the album itself appears to have a higher approval rate. I'm just glad that I'll never have to listen to this one again.

Song: "Supper's Ready"
Band: Genesis

Well that was an experience. I'd always heard the band was more experimental before they shifted to pop music, but I never actually looked for any of their music from before Phil Collins took over as lead vocalist. I'm not entirely sure how to feel about this song; it's like Chinballz, who I've never interacted with, somehow found a song that checks every box I was even remotely thinking of:

"Oh, you like androgyny, do you? How about Winston Churchill in a dress?!"

"Oh, you like villains? SURPRISE ANTICHRIST! ...Or something."

"You want to nominate a song that's over ten minutes long in its album version? HA! TWENTY MINUTES!""

"You want an excuse to look at songs by musicians you like, but never heard because you don't really listen to music outside of the radio? Here's a song by a band you know well due to their pop music, but have never heard due to not being pop music."

"You have a secret soft spot for nonsensical lyrics? HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!"

And it's like...I, I like every aspect of this separately? But I'm not sure I like them all mushed together like this? It's like three or four different songs thrown together, but.... I guess I like it? Sorta? I definitely need to listen to it a few more times now that I have a better idea of what I'm getting myself into, but... well I'm happy to have had a chance to hear it, either way.

Also glad that I don't have to actually rank this song because I really don't want to assign any type of points to it. It's an experience that defies any rational attempt at scoring it.

It's fairly new though so maybe it hasn't had enough time to catch on. There are few reviews to share with this song or maybe google doesn't want to help me out today but that is also surprisingly not what I expected to see. Weren't these guys popular once upon a time?
