also, i don't have a ps4, just a switch. my primary purpose for getting a puyo puyo type would be to play with friends as a board game alternative, i think.

is it the same thing as dr. robotnik's mean bean machine? that was the best use i got out of the sonic mega collection on gamecube

Yes! Its essentially Mean Bean Machine, which was Segas way of introducing the game in the West.

And I think thats the best way to look at it, almost like a man alternative party or board game. Something easy, fun and addictive, that also doesnt require a huge time commitment.

Puyo (played as Kirby's Avalanche for me) is probably my third favorite puzzle game behind Tetris Attack and Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo

The latter two definitely make a top 50 for me, maybe even top 20-- not sure Kirby's Avalanche would though. It's definitely on the border of puzzle games I'm passionate about vs not.

18 | Super Mario Kart (SNES)

I ended Puyo Puyo talking about how Im a firm supporter, and believer, in games that everyone can play, modeled in an arcade-esque style. I couldnt in good conscious name drop Mario Kartthe best multiplayer game of all-timeand not have it make the cut on this list.

So, the decision came down to which one?

Let me tell you which onethe one without the forsaken Blue Shell. Mario Kart 64 may have been a revolutionary multiplayer experience, but oh my days, the Blue Shell will forever be its legacy. That fateful moment was when the racing component of Mario Kart became a product of the Great Randomizer gods.

Another factor here is that Super Mario Kart still looks so beautiful today. Those bright, clear colors; pixel work that makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside; and the classic award ceremony where someone pops the cork to pop the Cheep Cheep balloon. It is full of wild imagination and character.

There are so many little touches about SMK that I love. Is it necessary to know the actual time the CPU crossed the finish line? Absolutely not, haha, but oh man, do I love that after each raceand that includes the part where everyone drives by and the leader holds the checkered flag. Those flourishes are cemented into my head as an insignificant but standout quality of the game.

Who also doesnt LOVE dropping banana peels during a Mario Circuit race right at the precise moment where a big jump occurs and it ruins someones race? Good times! I dont know why, but if this happens to the CPU they seemingly become unable to ever make the jump again, hahaor maybe thats just DK Jr. I have witnessed it, so I know it is real!

For me, the simplicity of Super Mario Kart is what sets it apart. It eschews the need for Kart parts, an endless roster of similar characters, funky drift hax, and all other manner of customization minutia. You have four classes, two characters per class and your racing and item skills behind you. Make no mistake, I still love modern Mario Kart, but I will always have a soft spot for the original.

That Puyo love, omg yes. I wish I could have hyped this board half that well on PPT, it's legitimately a best-in-genre game to me. The presence of the universally known Tetris helps like crazy with getting folks interested at parties, and before you know it the night's turned in to a puzzle frenzy of people screaming with hype at every drop of garbage blocks. It's a damn magical game.

No, it won't.

Mario Kart 64's Blue Shell is super tame compared to later incarnations. Blame Double Dash for what it became, not MK64!

this is definitely true. i read a lot about the "blue shell effect" but in my eyes it's not a premium mega-item

then i play mario kart on switch and i'm watching as it just atomizes the #1 player (almost never me) and i wonder why it's supposed to be fun

oh well

Mario kart 64 was too worried about creating the Blue Shell it didnt properly understand the power it was dealing with. It brought it on this world, and the Blue Shell evolved. MK64 also had the poop that was DK Jungle Raceway, so lets all reflect on that unfortunate texture.

This reminds me!

As awful as rubberband A.I. was made out to be, those higher difficulties stayed super competitive because of it. You still had to outrace your competition, even if you tried to cheese them. It makes the single player a bit more enjoyable, I think. I hated at the time, but Ive come around on it, because SMK is still pretty tough on 150cc, haha.

But, oh man, lapping Koopa Troopa feels good every time.

Controversial opinion, but I think Mario Kart Super Circuit is the best Super Mario Kart. It takes what made the SNES game fun and really dials it up with some insanely clever tracks. I love Ribbon Road and Sky-Garden, Cheep Cheep Island, etc. Also, it had every single SNES track which blew my mind at the time. Of course the big drawback was not easily accessible multiplayer but damn, that game had such an insane amount of content for a launch title it still blows my mind.

I feel like Mario Kart Super Circuit is probably my favorite Mario Kart but I haven't played it often enough or recently enough to be absolutely sure it has the edge over N64 or the Wii-U one-- I don't actually own the game. I had a lot of fun playing it on a friend's GBA though.

This is more a "I'm not super huge on any of the Mario Karts" thing than a "what I've Super Circuit was just that great" to be clear. I mean it was definitely fun but on the other hand I don't actually own it (don't own the Wii-U one either) so...

17 | Final Fantasy VI (SNES)

This is the highest ranking Final Fantasy game. Have the mighty fallen? Yes and no! Over the years, my interest in RPGs has waned considerably. I have fond memories of a few, what I look for today is wildly different from ten or fifteen years ago, and my time is crunched in a way that makes ultra long RPGs untenable at best.

So, here we have Final Fantasy VI.

Why this game has stuck with me above all the others has as much to do with its flaws as its strengths. Does that make sense? Maybe not, but Im intimately aware of where FFVI struggles, there are things I have NO love for!

Split party dungeons (a gigantic RPG no-no for me), frivolous and obnoxious sidequests, customization that is essentially a race to the bottom in terms of diversity, and a sizable part of the cast that are more or less irrelevant in every sense of the word.

I have never stopped having those same problems with FFVI since I first played it, but yet, I go through them every time with no inexplicable explanation as to why!

You can bet Im taking my Moogle Charm all the way up to Fanatics Tower, going to the Phoenix Cave and visiting Zozo, City of Nightmares, every time I play! Who on Earth even thought a city with a high encounter rate was a good idea? Oooof!

I love FFVI because of everything intermingled between all of the bad. It is full of high highs, scenes that are unforgettable, and a battle system that is an absolute joy to mess around withstats that dont work and all! There is a certain special sauce at play here that keeps me coming back again and again.

Did you know I love the World of Ruin? Terras story? Ooooh yeah, baby, Im THAT kind of guy!

Really, all of the characters have enjoyable stories and drama, satisfactory conclusions and goofy, larger-than-life personalities that arent too serious for their own good. They arent caricatures like FFIV, but arent as self-serious as FFVII or FFVIII. I think Final Fantasy is at its best when its that way.

To sum this all up, did you know that I wrote the entire Game Script for Final Fantasy VI Advance? This wasnt a time when a data dump happened, and I just cleaned it up. No, sir, I played through the entire game and typed it up as I went..

I was nuts, I had too much time, haha. I did that for free! The power of good video games, maybe.
