young Heroic Mario is the greatest hype man this board has ever seen. he is well known for going all in on a thing for a few weeks and driving the entire board to play said thing. it would be all he talked about. then a week would pass and it would go from #1 to like #47 on his top games list. I used to archive them for fun but I started after he started to chill out a little.

old Heroic Mario is not that -- but we have not seen his list in nearly a decade.

Idiotic nonsense. You're just trying to sugar-coat your inability to comprehend grander games like SotC with this contrived fanfiction! Super Mario Bros. is a representative of an ancient time, wherein games were nothing more than a child's plaything.

Hah!

It is clear to me that you are a simpleton who clearly does not appreciate grand art like Super Mario Bros.! The sophisticated design of the levels; the poetry spoken by the Mushroom Retainer at the end of every world; the flaming intensity between Mario and Bowser as they fight over a bridge of hellfire -- one desperating fighting for his life to prevent the Golden Key of Doom from being pulled; the other sweating under the intense heat to rescue his beloved girlfriend.

YOU KNOW NOT THE POWER AND COMPLEXITY OF MARIO!

You must have accidentally sniffed up the wrong armpit when you were crawling up one of those burly monsters! The foggy and open-ended world full of nothingness must have made you high! Shadow of the Colossus is a a monumental piece of trash, sir! You whippersnappers are all about treasuring these newly created games like they're good! I'll have you know that nothing that didn't come from the graceful hand of Nintendo is trash! Sony? More like the devil!

Come into the light, HM. It might be more comfortable in the cave of simple lies, but in the end you'll be better for it.

I have seen the light -- that glorious, glorious light -- and the person in that light was a plumber eating more spaghetti than any human being should dare see!

You -- philistine -- have yet to see this light. Don't worry, though, one day you'll recognize Super Mario Bros. as the most complex piece of work in the history of the world!!

Fear those colored overalls and large nose.

There have been some ups with Nintendo and some downs over the past few years, but all I see in the future is constant success and pure gaming. I may have flip-flopped in the past, talked more highly of other companies, and been more critical of Nintendo, but thats all done at this point. After reading, watching, and viewing every bit of Nintendo related content that I could these past couple of days, I can honestly say that Im excited downright happy. As far as Im concerned, I am back on board with the company that has given me the most gaming pleasure in my time playing videogames. If gaming is what you want, Nintendo is the only way to go.

Wii will change everything.

I believe.

So I ended up beating the game last night. I clocked in at 11:41 with a percentage of 71%.

This game is above and beyond anything I had expected. There's absolutely nothing on the Wii that's even comes close to Corruption; it's in its own tier right now far above everything else, including Twilight Princess. I thought Metroid Prime was about as close to a perfect game as it got (no real standout flaws), but Corruption manages to spit all over it. Partly because the renewed intensity and focus on the combat, partly because of the world(s), and partly because of the controls, which pretty much demolishes what the GCN had to offer. It isn't just "this is fun, but not a whole lot better than a normal controller," either.

I'm sure everyone's heard about the controls, but man, it's nothing compared to actually getting your hands on them. Corruption, more than any other so far, is a perfect example of how Nintendo's philosophy with the Wii can extend to the "hardcore" games. The term gets thrown around a lot, but Prime 3 really is an immersive experience because of them. There's probably not a cooler feeling than interacting with the world -- going up to a lever, pulling it out, twisting it, and then putting it back into place to activate a generator or something. It's not significant part of the game, but it's just so damn cool, and it feels great. Those moments scattered throughout the game are what makes it, aside from the much improved combat.

Controls aside, the rest of the game is just as good. It retains the same atmosphere the series is known for and delivers graphically due in large part to the incredible art direction. And the boss fights... ohmygod you get to fight omega ridley and ohmygod it is so amazing ohmygod mudkipz (lets see who read this). All of the Hunters are great, but the most standout battle is definitely the end. Not only do you get to fight Dark Samus, but you also face off against Mother Brain -- okay, so it's not technically Mother Brain, but it might as well be... just a more active and lethal version! It wasn't too challenging thanks to how ridiculous Samus is at that point, but still amazing nonetheless.

Speaking of which, Samus? Oh, yeah, she's a badass. If opening and firing shots into Ridley's mouth at point blank range weren't cool enough, she somehow ends up assembling a gigantic nuke (with some help from her trusty ship), escorts the nuke to the destination point over the planet, defends it from Space Pirate attack, and then launches it over the target, manually. All the meanwhile, she's got three minutes to repair a broken escape pod -- and does it. Hold me.

I think the coolest moment she had was at the end, though. After the Galactic Federation had retreated from its assault on Phaaze through a wormhole, the Commander of the fleet was like "oh man where's samus," and his lackey was like "oh noes i'm not getting signal." And then out of nowhere she comes flying by, gives a thumbs up, and sends a message to the Commander saying "Mission Complete." Yeah -- all in a days work. You know, assembling and launching nukes, beating down a gigantic space dragon, killing the source of Phazon and destroying a planet. Small time -- why is it so awesome

But yeah, amazing game. I'm going through it again on Hypermode (hardest difficulty in the game). Tons of fun.

game of the year is here the fight for second begins now aww yeah

(Prediciton: Second post -- "1. Samus"; third post -- "1. Metroid Prime 3"; fifth post -- "so is samus your favorite character now"; tenth post -- "LAWL HM HYPE")

20 | Phoenix Wright (Nintendo DS)

Lets talk about what is almost certainly Board 8s most popular, most identifying, video game.

Phoenix Wright.

I remember when ol Bird Hair caught fire here. It seemingly blew up overnight! Everyone was playing, praising, arguing and ranking all manner of thingsthe cases, the characters, the best items used for evidenceit was out of control! A true phenomenon in every sense of the word.

(That last bit may, in fact, be an exaggeration. MAYBE.)

For me? I was skeptical.

Now, while I may have an expert Hype Man, I never was one for The Trends. So, naturally, young me was hesitant in following the crowdfor a little while, anyway. I may have never been roped into the Phoenix Wright zeitgeist, but I nonetheless caved during those formative years, and now have a super soft spot for the game. There simply comes a time when everyone you know starts recommending you play something that push comes to shove, and you just have to give in!

Phoenix Wright is an absolute gem of a game, I have come to find!

It has lovable cast of characters, with a truly bizarre story, and moments that are one-of-a-kind. Will anyone forget the drama around THE STEEL SAMURAI? Oldbag? The Butz? Phoenix Wrights immaculately geld hair that seems almost impossible to maintain?

I have very little to negatively say about PW minus Act 5, which I have no love for in any way, shape, or form. (Sorry, guys, its a bad time with a bad helper.) I even revisited this game in the past few years, as part of a larger playthrough of the series, and found it holds up remarkably well. Enough at this point where I have no problem considering it a classic. The dialogue and characters are timeless, even by todays standards, which is a feat for any game of a certain time or age.

Phoenix Wright takes me back to a good time. This list will be full of games that have latched on and held strong over the years; the ones that have a certain innate quality that make them unforgettable. Many games come and go without much fanfare, but if you can make a good memory AND still fun to revisit in 2018? You may be listworthy!

Haha, I absolutely remember being a total butt about playing PW for the longest time. I didn't even play any of the other games until the past few years. Got some wisdom teeth out, played some Phoenix Wright, became a fan -- the story of my turn.

AA3 playthrough will definitely happen. I got burned out playing them back-to-back-to-back, but I'm invested enough to see the whole series through. I heard the Switch may get a port of the entire series, so I was mildly holding off until the time passed when that could get announced, but if it takes too long, I have the whole series on my 3DS.

FFVII is great! Is it still good enough to be top 20? Who can say?

19 | Puyo Puyo Tetris (Switch)

My criteria for choosing which games made the list were as such: does it hold up as a fun experience today, would I play and maintain an entire playthrough without getting bored, and do I have some tangible connection to the game? With that in mind, a couple of recent releases (read: this past year) have slipped through the cracks into the top 20.

Enter Puyo Puyo!

Secretly, I hate Tetris. I am not good at it, I cannot wrap my head around its endless appeal, and maybe sorta because it is locked in a never ending struggle against Super Mario Bros. for the most influential game of all-time, I have an irrational grudge against it. And, also, again, Im bad at it. Fighting game bad. Anyone can crush in Tetris fisticuffs.

But, Puyo Puyo? I loooove me some jelly belly puzzles! Those are my speed, my jam session. From back in the days of Dr. Robotniks Mean Bean Machine all the way to today, I have experienced a love affair with this brand of puzzle. Connecting four of the same color, where pieces fall off when they are hanging in air?

It clicks with me! My brain and hands understand the task and handand the sweet magic follows.

So, how does Puyo Puyo Tetris on Switch fit into this? Well, Im of the opinion that is one of the best multiplayer games you can own today. Its right up there with Mario Kart in its wide appeal. The controls are simple, the premise is simple, the fun is nonstop. Its a perfect game to introduce to people who love playing video games, or those who have only briefly touched one.

The highs of dropping a million gray squares on one of your friends right before they hit an enormous combo are incredible, as is the deflating low of having the same thing happen to you. And when you have four people all Puyo Tetrising? Its like Smash Bros. with items on High.

If this wasnt a multiplayer feast for the ages, it wouldnt have made the list. As a single player experience, theres satisfaction to be had herethere is an adventure mode, unlockables, the core mechanics are timeless and funbut playing with my girlfriend, or friends, has an almost Civilization quality of one more match when its over. You always want to go againand again and again.

There is such a sense of laughter, triumph, competitiveness and good times when you play Puyo Puyo Tetris. It encapsulates everything I think video games should be. There is a time and a place for the narrative, cinematic driven experience, but ultimately, fun for everyone is a mantra with games I subscribe to totally. If you wrap that in an arcade-sequence experience, I am your fan!

Yeah, you might have to evaluate how much a puzzle game is worth to you personally. It does have online play, so the need for immediate people isnt necessary, but I think its an intricate part of the enjoyment. I THINK it may be cheaper on the PS4, if thats more your speed?

Haha, the frequency of my lists was probably comparable to a monthly subscription to Nintendo Power. I am okay with this comparison!

All these years later, though, I still say it was mostly a way to promote discussion about games before we had dedicated topics for them like there are now. The board alway has those lulls in between contests!
