Finally got to actually watch the new FRANXX. Such a foreboding episode considering how upbeat it was.

It made me really sentimental and nostalgic because of star reasons. Like legitimately I can point out Orion that quickly and easily but no other constellation, and stuff about my birthday being in ~a week which marks probably the 5th year since I saw my first shooting star.

Watched Zaregoto. Pretty good stuff! Kinda felt like the adaptation got better as it went along, especially the last episode, which was by far the best of the bunch. The art and animation seemed to get better too. <3 Kunagisa. This was never my favorite Zaregoto book (probably middle of the pack...?) so I hope its great sales success will lead to them adapting at least up to book 3, which is my favorite of the early episodic books. I couldn't quite remember the full answer to the mystery either, so it was fun to try and pick up the pieces (I mostly failed but figured out as much as the main character did). Kinda a shame it isn't streaming anywhere. Would be cool if more people here watched it.

Not sure if anyone else here is watching it but I think I'm going to drop Beatless. A few of the concepts had potential but I don't feel like they're doing anything with them. I'm barely following the disjointed plot and I don't care about any of the characters.

Still, if anyone is watching Beatless, let me know if it improves and I'll come back to it. If this were only twelve episodes I'd stick with it but twenty-four is a long way to go for something I'm not enjoying and that I don't see getting any better.

Ok so semi-rant about After the Rain.

The reason I picked this show up initially was mostly because the description reminded me of The Garden of Words, which is a comparison I still feel is accurate. However the more I watch, I feel like this show is just missing something that The Garden of Words had, which is...well...a real relationship between the two leads. In Garden of Words, the continued interaction of the two leads is depicted as natural and balanced while being exactly what both of them needed in their lives, which is fundamentally why I thought it presented such compelling drama. With After the Rain and the way the status difference works in that show, however, it seems like (almost) every interaction the two leads have was designed to be as inorganic and as uncomfortable as possible, which really makes it hard for me to get invested at all. It's a shame because I like both characters as individuals a lot, and from a technical perspective the show is very solid also, but I just can't actually get into at all.

Of course, while I don't think I'd prefer this route either way, this is all fine if they're trying to depict a darker drama about the realities of such a relationship and the effect it has on them rather than something light-hearted, but it really doesn't seem like the show is actually doing that. There's hints here and there I guess, but at best they're half-assing it when they need to go all in or not at all, and so it just doesn't work imo.

All that said I'm still enjoying the show enough to continue watching (which just means I'm enjoying it at all), but man there is a pretty big blemish on this show right now.

I hadn't taken the time to really wrap my mind around it, but now that I've read your post I think I have that same problem with After the Rain. It's becoming increasingly clear that the story is more interested in exploring the infatuation rather than the relationship that could potentially result from it.

I think he means relationship period, not just a romantic relationship. It sounds like he's implying that the two feel like strangers in ATR.

There are a few romances where the characters get together early. Could recommend you some if you like.

And yeah I'd appreciate recommendations if you don't mind! Preferably ones that are less twisted than Scum's Wish where I suppose it could be argued that the leads got together early on.

Yeah every time I used the word "relationship" in that post I meant it more generally, though romance is at least a factor in both relevant relationships.

More like acquaintances than strangers, but I'd say this is more or less accurate I guess.

To be honest though I do think it's sort of intentional. This is the observable effect, but I think the root of the problem is probably what I said in the second paragraph of my post. It's like the show can't decide whether to treat this is a lighthearted and fulfilling romance or as a toxic and meaningless relationship, and right now it's in this awkward middle ground that does neither.
