My life isn't going well and I am lightly thinking of just leaving it all behind. Not sure if I can.

Life has just been very bad lately. Kind of worn down.

Honestly, given what you've said here recently, getting away from it seems smart if you can afford to. Good call.

I disagree that Texas (at least DFW) "kinda sucks" unless you dislike weather, though. Most of its advantages are economic, but other than that it's pretty average IMO

I worked on the back end for a travel company (dealing with vendors) but ibthink it is time for s career change. I want to get into technical writing/editing because I am good at it despite no formal experience.

I might want to take you up on that SE.

Madison, Wisconsin is an amazing city. I'm not going to try to sell it to you because I don't want to responsible if you come up here and hate it, but if you can deal with snow and cold you should research the city. It's great.

It's always entertaining driving through Lancaster on a Saturday around noon and all the tourists are getting the experience of a buggy ride. I think I counted 13 the last time I passed through.

And yeah, pretty much what I was going to say. Winter is cold in this area for someone used to Florida, but hey, recent super bowl champions!

If you're into technical writing then maybe look for entry level stuff at a gaming company? That would probably mean LA, Seattle, or NY maybe?

We should totally meet up sometime. I work Downtown and take the bus so it's relatively easy for me to get around. (PM me if you're interested so we don't derail Chris's topic)

Washington DC is a pretty neat area. Weather is fine if you dont mind some freezing weather for 3 months. Summers and Winters are uncomfortable but relatively mild compared to many places in the country.

Lots of employment opportunities and a diverse international culture surpassed only by NYC and SF imo. It's expensive though and if you have to drive then you might regret moving because traffic is ass.

Lots of things to do in town and within a short distance of most of anywhere east of the Mississippi.

This is one of the most objectively wrong things I've ever heard.

Madison has GREAT restaurants. Also has good public transit and enough things to do to keep you occupied.

Louisville sucks.

Don't come here. However, Lexington, Bowling Green, and Covington are all awesome.

Also if you'd want to live near enough to Louisville to still use its advantages, while missing most of its disadvantages, Shelbyville, Simpsonville and Shephersville are awesome.

Chicago is amazing. Easily the cheapest big city, lots of free stuff such as museums and stuff if you are an IL resident, great food and music scene, winter they deck out thr city with lights and there's a bunch of free skating including a quarter mile long track with slight hills, summer has mutliple free festivals every weekend, there's extensive beaches and the lake temperature gets to low 80s, awesome city. Oh yeah, no need for a car too which is great.

Vegas has some of the world's best entertainment, good food, no humidity, little rain, good cost of living, decent number of outdoor activities, and a surprisingly large and active nerd culture. It's also a short drive from SoCal without SoCal's insane cost of living.

But more than half the city is ghetto, so you'll need to concentrate on the nicer areas to live in. It's a city that doesn't value education (NV is the least educated state behind Mississippi, I think), and the only university here is a bit of a joke outside a small handful of good majors.

I can sell you on Madison in more detail...

1. Great restaurants. Anyone who has been here can vouch for how good the food is. Burgers, fish fry, pizza, all kinds of ethnic food... and almost all of it is good. The restaurant scene here is always lively and you'll definitely enjoy it. Just ignore SephyG - he hasn't even been here, so how the hell can he base it on something he 'heard" from an idiot?

2. On a budget? Woodman's is an amazing grocery store where you can get national brand items for $1-2 less than other places, so you wouldn't need to be stuck on instant noodles. The farmer's markets are excellent and have a wide selection, too... and you can use your food stamps at them.

3. Cost of living is decent. Better than any big city. Like you can get a good 1-bedroom apartment in a great area for $900 a month. Cheapest is $600 a month and that's not even in a bad area. Getting a job that pays for that isn't overly challenging. Getting a great job might be hard. Depends on what you're looking for. Fast food pay starts at $10 an hour, for example.

4. Friendly people. Seriously. You can chat with people on the street for a bit and they don't mind at all. People will let you cross from their cars at intersections that don't have traffic lights. Traffic isn't rage-inducing... usually. People are mindful compared to many other places I've been.

5. Public transit is great. Buses are sophisticated and make sense since they're run by the city government of Madison (in conjunction with Middleton for some bus routes). I have a car and yet I take the bus to and from work. Lets me hang out Downtown.

6. Weather is awesome 2/3rds of the year. Winter sucks, sure, and there are a few excessively humid days every summer where you need a shower after just going to get the mail (Dew Point is too close to the actual temp, so the humidity is VISIBLE). When the weather is nice, though, there's always something going on - the music scene, great restaurants, or college activities even. You don't need to be a student for those. Also, Geek.Kon every August.

7. You have me and MI. Two friends that can show you around and help you out.

It's worth noting that Middleton is almost always in the top ten best mid-size cities to live (10,000 to 50,000 people) in Money Magazine.

That's just some of it, too. I don't want to ever leave, though I whine about the weather every February... and the local groundhog predicted six more weeks...
