I spent this Christmas with in-laws in Tacoma. The Seattle/Tacoma area is the only place I've seen in the country with natural beauty that might rival Hawaii. It's also bound to have a young/hip/nerd culture - not as much as Seattle itself, but it's the neighboring city so you wouldn't be far from all the big city stuff. Pretty sure Tacoma is a lot more affordable than Seattle, too.

Tacoma is terrible to live in though. Avoid Kitsap County like a plague while youre at it, unless you have money for gig harbor or bainbridge. The area Santas living at isnt bad. North of the olympics. The cost of living is insane within like a 50 mile radius of Seattle.

Whoa, whoa. Man, there are some things about this area that are beautiful - the mountains, the puget sound, the fact that we built our cities inside temperate rainforests that tower over everything - but Hawaii is on another level.

Knoxville is pretty decent! The only thing I really hate is the humidity in the summer but I generally can't deal with humidity very well at all.

New York isnt bad and honestly neither is Philly. Theres enough to do in those two cities where you will never be bored

Probably true, but it was a crystal clear day on December 23rd, and we took a ferry with Mount Rainier in clear view - that was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen. We took a hundred pics and none of them did it the faintest bit of justice.

Also, I get the feelings that most bigger cities have a fairly active nerd culture these days. Nerd culture has been mainstream for at least the past five years.
