Hype is fine, but when it's exaggerated and excessive it annoys people. I don't really know why but it does. Like Bane always talks about how much he likes NitW but he doesn't try to shove it in people's faces all the time or embellish it, and I doubt anyone has a problem with that. Regardless it's hard for me to define it because it doesn't bother me personally

And yes, games by traditional developers absolutely have the same thing. A good example is FF7. I've met a lot of people who hate it because it's 'overrated' and no actual complaints about the game itself

They can if the area receives little rain/snow during the winter, due to water being frozen and thus not flowing downstream.

No one has commented on this yet, but PUBG is in today's poll. This is rather interesting, given that some websites (including GameSpot) decided PUBG wouldn't be eligible for GotY this year since it was in Early Access on PC for most of the year and only came out of Early Access in December. Pretty much every website that does GotY awards does them in December, so games released on December 1st or later are ineligible for a GotY award in the same year they came out. GameSpot has said PUBG will be considered for the 2018 GotY awards.

PUBG looks terrible in today's poll, but I blame that on the fact this is an Xbox One poll. It should do much better in the PC poll. The difference in PUBG's strength between Xbox One and PC will probably be the largest strength difference we've seen for a game appearing in 2 or more system GotY polls.

i'm really happy Cuphead is doing so well. the industry should focus more on supporting indie devs with a vision and passion. Microsoft could fund like 100 indie games instead of funneling money into another Gears of War and if even a quarter came out like Cuphead they'd make a good profit.

I don't think Microsoft have $600M-$1B to throw at a wall of indie games, which produces a Cuphead-level success (over 1+ million in sales in ~3 months) at a rate of about 1 every 1000 games.

Despite how I may have worded my posts, I don't hate indie games, far from it, I like quite a few of them. They are great for the gaming industry because they are easily accesible and usually cheap.

I just think the fanbase in general have a tendency to make them seem like they are better than they really are in most cases.

alright well I take back my awful math, instead I'll just say I'd rather take 20 risky indie games than 1 AAA game

oh I agree with you in the overall sense that indie games are an incredibly fruitful area of gaming. over the last few years, there have been 2-3 good indie games released each week on average. it's ridiculous. there's enough in any given year to cover most people's preferences. it's just that there's a mix of: 1. Cuphead's success goes beyond "merely" successful games like Pyre or Hollow Knight 2. giving ~15 people 5 years to make a game can get pretty expensive 3. not all good indie games are as well-received as Cuphead and 4. a steady, reliable return of investment like a Gears of War represents has an inherent value to a publisher (except I think Gears or War is a bad example in general because the well is kinda dry there)

Looks like PUBG is getting back into the race after an awful early vote, and could even go up in percentage in the next few updates. So it's a potential 3-way fight here.

Remember how we were calling 2017 the best year for gaming since 2011? This was back in April/May of last year around the time of the Years Contest. Since then, 2017 has not looked particularly great. Based on these polls so far, 2017 is anchored by Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Persona 5, Horizon: Zero Dawn, and NieR: Automata. There's no supporting cast after that, as every other game has looked like total ass in these polls.

The common theme I'm seeing with these polls are GameFAQs users rebelling against AAA games.

Resident Evil 7, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Assassin's Creed Origins, Wolfenstein II, Destiny 2, and Forza Motorsport 7 are all games by AAA developers that have bombed in these polls.

While some of those games are in genres that GameFAQs doesn't care about too much, the 3 first games on that list are all from franchises where one or more earlier games has done very well in past GotY polls and won at least one contest match as well. Wolfenstein II and Destiny 2 are FPS games, a genre that's fallen from grace once Call of Duty imploded on the site. Although for what it's worth, Wolfenstein II is a single-player only game, a rarity for a modern-day FPS game. So I thought that alone might have boosted Wolfenstein II, knowing that this site's users wouldn't be buying a game that revolves more around the multiplayer than the single-player (since there is no multiplayer).

The last game on the list is Forza Motorsport 7, a game from a genre that GameFAQs basically doesn't care about (with the exception of Mario Kart).

Divinity: Original Sin II took the lead over Doki Doki Literature Club at 7:25 AM. The strange thing about this performance is that I don't even see any rallies for it on 4chan (a place that probably would rally it). This has been all GameFAQs so far.

In terms of trends, Divinity: Original Sin II has been showing off a very strong night vote in this poll, so it might stand to reason that it could drop off later on. Games with strong night votes usually don't maintain their strong night vote during the day vote as well.

There is criteria that Allen uses when picking out the games for these polls.

Allen uses a combination of critic scores, GameFAQs user ratings, and GameFAQs popularity to figure out which games to pick for these polls.

Yeah I don't think so. Both Danganronpa and Ys VIII have much better metacritic and user scores than at least 60% of the games in that poll.

Seems like Allen just picks whatever the hell he wants or forgets and doesn't really care about the GotY polls. No excuse for not having NieR: Automata and Nioh in the PC polls yesterday. Two very highly acclaimed games, critic and user-wise.

I'm guessing those 2 games are a case of GameFAQs popularity coming into play, as the site in general prefers the PS4 version of the game instead of the PC version. At least on GameFAQs, the PS4 version is far more widely played than the PC version if you look at message board activity.

NieR: Automata has 126 pages of topics for the PS4 version, but only 2 pages of topics for the PC version. No point in putting NieR: Automata in the PC poll when so few people on GameFAQs have played the game on PC.

Allen's criteria for selecting games includes critic scores, GameFAQs user ratings, and GameFAQs popularity. It's possible that one of those criteria took those games out of being considered for this poll.

You can't possibly include every single game in the poll, so you try to narrow down the list and include the most popular games based on various criteria.

it is a shame, but cuts need to be made. you gotta do more than be one of the best-selling PC games of 2017, be among the 25 highest rated PC games of all-time, and the 20 highest funded gaming Kickstarters of all-time. only the cream of the crop for these polls.

I wonder if Allen will just stop doing indie polls after this. The term indie barely means anything anymore. Not to mention that a large majority of these games have been in other polls. Two system polls won by "indie" games too. With the top 3 in the PC poll all being indie. Although granted they left out Nier for some reason.

If Hellblade and Divinity are indie games, does that mean Nihon Falcom games are indie now? They apparently only had 49 total employees as of 2015 (https://ask.fm/AskEndlessHistory/answers/133993233703), self-publish their own games in Japan, and clearly don't have large production values.
