Allen's criteria for selecting games includes critic scores, GameFAQs user ratings, and GameFAQs popularity. The same criteria he uses for the Games Contests, minus the nominations as a factor for these polls. Unfortunately, Fire Emblem Warriors got less than ideal critic scores based on the Metacritic score shown here:

The GameFAQs ratings were higher than Gravity Rush 2 and it had more than twice as many ratings as well. So I'm really confused why it didn't make it.

AAA forever!

What is wrong with gaming today is that people who can't afford a full priced AAA game (the very best like BotW, P5, Odyssey which should by all account be easily worth $100plus) goes on to play an indie whatever remains of-I-don't-care, that they can afford and acts as if it is the greatest thing ever and ****s on the actual heavyweights which require 100x more budget and developmental staff and time to make.

That's a really reductive way of thinking about games. Games aren't split between AAA and indie, and the size of a game's budget and whether or not it has a major publisher attached should not be a judge of quality. Or even the contents or style of the game. Look at Hellblade, which is an indie game, or Journey, which is not.

Cuphead is winning because it's a popular game, it would beat most of the games in the PS4 poll. Hell, it's sold as well as Nier and Persona. I'm guessing we'll see Nier vs. Cuphead in the PC poll, and I would take Nier.

Of course, I'm not sure Cuphead qualifies as indie. It was funded by Microsoft.

Haven't played Hellblade. Half-Life 2 is one of my favorite FPS game of all time (Had no idea it was an indie game so thats news to me). Minecraft has always been a fun way to pass time (but I wouldn't call it great or anything)

Journey is the ultimate "gaming is an art" nonsense that only pretentious people will like so yeah I do hate it as it has only about 2 hours of content and you literally cannot die or there is zero sense of accomplishment. If you like Journey then you hate video games or vice versa.

The issue is that indie game fans will hype up whatever indie game that they like, to super omega nuclear levels of hype. Making it seem like it is legit Best Game Ever material when it is usually a 3-5 Hour game with gameplay mechanics as deep as a dried up river in cold winter.

What Remains of Edith Finch was by far the worst offender this year. At least Cuphead had fun gameplay even though it wasn't very deep either.

Stardew Valley is one of the only indie games I feel is worthy of its praise because it is deep and it is very well made (even though it isn't a genre I enjoy I can see how well it is made for its particular genre). Even ones I really liked like Shovel Knight and Braid would be nowhere near my Top 200 games.

So yeah these are my issues with indie games. They are usually not as great as their fans make it seem to be.

What I'm trying to get at here is that indie is largely an arbitrary distinction, Half-Life 2 being a good example of that. Meanwhile Journey was 100% a Sony game, it's not indie.

If your issue is short narrative experiences, I dunno, but a lot of those are not indie, and many many indie games are not those. And even then, many of those are great games, like INSIDE for instance, it's a short burst of great gameplay and story.

Lots of different types of games are good. This might be controversial.

I like Portal. It is way longer in content than Journey unless you use a walkthrough or something (but even then it would still be longer) It is a puzzle game with brilliant level design. It has entertaining dialogue and is satisfying to progress. It is nothing like that shell of a video game called Journey.

That said the first game pales in comparison to the 2nd. Length is one of those factors.

I'm not saying length is all that matters in a video game but more content and more depth always helps.

these are the ramblings of a deeply insecure person afraid people with a different aesthetic will come and take his games from him.

for a solid three months, my then 5yo niece would ask to play Journey on the weekend. It was the first game she ever completed. Trekking through the underground caverns or icy paths and avoiding the dragons gave her a huge sense of pride. she could spend hours in that opening area just before the slide, looking for "sand friends" and helping them find secrets. this opened her up to other games, like Abzu, Prune, Flower, ICO. exploring these seemingly vast worlds primed her for exploring the worlds of BotW and Odyssey. truly someone who hates games.

I actually like indie games, mostly because they are more creative than those with big budgets. They have to be though, since they won't get people interested in them if they don't have something which stands out and has them consider buying them

This is true but I think you're overreacting. I've never enjoyed them either and I guess it can be annoying when anything is overhyped, but hating them is a bit silly. Some people enjoy them and that's fine, you don't and that's fine.

Edith Finch is super super great, and so is Journey. Actually it was really my 2nd time playing Journey that it really clicked for me, first time I thought it was good but going about it with another person is fuckin something.

Indie games are over hyped by their fans (like pretty much everything else), and so the people who don't like them get upset because it's popular and they think it shouldn't be. It's kind of similar to music, and how people hate artists just because they're popular and they don't like their music. I never really understood why this bothers humans so much but it does!

I completely agree, and based on the sales numbers I'd say the positives far outweigh the negatives! Sure some people will cry about it on the internet but as far as I know the games are selling great now and are getting a lot more exposure

Not huge on Journey, but it's blatantly designed to achieve a certain feel, and complaining that it doesn't do the things it doesn't set out to accomplish is pretty silly. Like, if a minimalist, stylized adventure game doesn't sound up your alley, why are you playing Journey?
