AAI1 is similar to AA1 in the length of its cases and the way the first three cases ramp up to one another, but I wouldn't say it's really similar in structure, story-wise. For one thing, 1-5 isn't part of the original game. It has much more in common with AA3, with nonlinear storytelling and a flashback case right before the grand finale.

Playing AA1 after playing other games in the series is weird. You really become hyper-aware of how differently paced 1-3 and 1-4 are from literally every other case in the entire series. Even though they're three days, which seemed like it was long at the time, all of those days are super short and the case is over before you even know it. On one hand, it's kind of nice that they get right to the point, but on the other hand they actually feel kind of rushed. 1-3 manages to feel both rushed AND slow-paced during day 2, so that's one hell of an achievement.

I watched a YouTube video where you're cross examining meekins in 1-5 day 2 trial, first half. it was 45 minutes long. 1-4 day 2 trial was 45 minutes total. that's a problem.

1-3 day 3 is about one hour total, both the investigation and the trial.

Seems kind of insane considering how loaded that day is.

Question about 6-1

So when did the murder actually happen? Earlier in the case we proved that it had to be during the Song of Ceremony because he still could hear it during the blackout, but that doesn't make any sense if the murderer was playing the damalan during it. Also unless the game was just intentionally misleading us during the intro, Ahlbi should have been standing right next to Phoenix at that point.

By the way I did think of one major disagreement I have with your choice of big moments on the list - L-3's biggest twist for me is Belduke didn't drink the sleeping drug

Yeah, that one qualifies. The fact that Jean didn't actually kill Belduke is a pretty big twist, too.

Man, L-3 is a legitimately good case.

Yeah, basically the same twist there, just learning that he didn't drink from the bottle that Jean gave him is the moment where that suddenly clicks together, and the moment you realize the trial's not over yet

I kinda wish the game had done a little more foreshadowing ahead of time that Fulbright is the Phantom. There aren't really any hints about it in 5-2 or 5-3. There are a few more things that make sense in 5-4 if you know he's the Phantom ahead of time, but that's about it.

nothing wrong with being canon-inessential. i even prefer it to going canon-heavy and screwing up (lol aa4). true both on a case- and game-level.

that said the story it wanted to tell (phoenix's return, a new attorney, THE DARK AGE OF THE LAW) demanded more canonical implications

not sure what else you want from that other than "hey Phoenix is back"

DD's sole job was to restore faith in the franchise. Mission accomplished. They've still got time to do more stuff with Athena. The Dark Age of the Law was a Phoenix/Blackquill thing, and that got resolved within DD.

I don't even think it's a Phoenix thing really. that trio takes it on as a collective. when I think of something being "vs. Blackquill", I think Apollo before I think Phoenix.

Well, it's because Apollo vs. Blackquill is an excellent rivalry. Maybe the second best after the obvious Phoenix/Edgeworth.

But I mean the implication is that the Dark Age of the Law was instigated by Phoenix getting disbarred for forgery and Blackquill being convicted for murder, and both of those things are dealt with by the end of DD.

I've wondered this before but I was skimming through some AAI1 stuff last night and it occurred to me again, but is Lang illiterate? Like, every time someone hands him a document, he asks Shih-na to read it for him. Or maybe it's just he can't read English/Japanese despite being able to speak it since he can supposedly read those scrolls with Lang Zi sayings on them.

also the PWHD ports had updated localizations, though I doubt they were done from scratch

not sure if AJ or AAI do though since I haven't played those yet

The PWHD localization was definitely not done from scratch. From the parts I actually compared (which was only through 1-2 before I got bored), it was pretty thorough and well thought out, but it was not from scratch. I really doubt they'll put the effort into localizing AAI2.

It would be a trip if they did, though, considering I have basically internalized Prosecutor's Path as the "official" AAI2 for all intents and purposes. I'll never be able to accept a name other than Sebastian Debeste, for instance.
