Personally, I'm not *opposed* to marriage, but my bride's finances would need to be massively better than my own to consider it. I want to be one of the few guys who could get out of a divorce ahead.

If you think your wife having/making more money than you means the courts won't make you pay alimony and/or child support in the event of a divorce, you're woefully misinformed.

It certainly could work out that way, but it's not at all guaranteed. Especially child support.

If you think that the courts would make a husband who makes far less than the wife pay alimony to the wife, *you're* woefully misinformed. In that case, the husband is far more likely to get alimony and that's bearing in mind that the division of assets tries to split things up nearly equally (in the absence of a pre-nup)

As for the child, whoever has majority custody is entitled to support (and no, gender doesn't matter although personal finances might). If you have two working parents with equally split custody, there's likely to not be any child support unless there's a massive disparity in income.

Like I said, Zeus, it could (and should) work that way, but it's not guaranteed.

There are plenty of states where this isn't the case at all, though.

How any given settlement works depends a lot on the state in question, who the presiding judge winds up being, and how good your lawyer is. Even splits or assessments based on actual income aren't necessarily the status quo everywhere.

And while things are probably better now than they've been in the past, a lot of divorce courts are definitely still a bit skewed in favor of the female over the male, especially in cases where child custody comes into play.

Yes, court is all dependant on luck really. You could have the best case in the world and still lose because the American justice system is shit

Live off of welfare, then it is the government that she has to take to court for child support (I am not even kidding, that is what my aunt had to do when she was trying to get money out of her ex husband).

Why, will getting married again change anything about my relationship? We're living together and are happy so what has marriage got to do with anything?
If you're (somewhat poorly) suggesting that everyone should find a stable partner, that's also a faulty assumption that everyone wants that.
If you're so happily married, why are you here saying foolish things to us instead of being with your wife?
