Like a lot of aspiring dictators, though, Trump seems to have found one demographic in particular that he can still mold into his ideal supporters: children. Today, Trump spoke at the massive Boy Scouts Jamboree, but instead of telling the thousands of young people in attendance about some crap he doesn’t comprehend, like working hard or respecting people, he got them to chant for him by promising he’d kill the Affordable Care Act (and most likely take away insurance from a good number of them and their families). Unsurprisingly, the video of this is pretty unsettling:

https://twitter.com/igorvolsky/status/889629841724755968

Truth really is stranger than fiction

https://www.thestar.com/news/world/2017/07/24/the-17-most-jaw-dropping-moments-of-donald-trumps-speech-to-boy-scouts.html

This one stood out:

He told a meandering five-minute story about developer William Levitt: “He sold his company for a tremendous amount of money and he went out and bought a big yacht and he had a very interesting life. I won’t go any more than that because you’re Boy Scouts, I’m not going to tell you what he did — should I tell you? Should I tell you? Oh, you’re Boy Scouts, but you know life, you know life.”

He continued: “What happened is he bought back his company and he bought back a lot of empty land…and in the end he failed and he failed badly. He lost all of his money, he went personally bankrupt, and he was now much older. And I saw him at a cocktail party. And it was very sad. Because the hottest people in New York were at this party. It was the party of Steve Ross. Steve Ross, he was one of the great people. He came and…”

As bizarre as that story is, this anecdote is about a long-dead real estate developer famous for issues with only renting/selling to whites.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/William_Levitt#Segregation

what a bizarre thing to talk to children about

I grew up in the suburbs and loathe nature. Scouts was never going to be a good fit.

It didn't help that our local Troop was run by idiots who either didn't really know or care what they were doing, because it made the whole experience kind of lame in general. For pretty much everyone, it felt more like a chore your parents forced you into rather than anything you actually wanted to be part of yourself.

About my only fond memories of Scouts at all was in Cub Scouts, the one time we did a team race where we had to build a cart and then drag it through wooded trails in a race that was sort of like a stripped down version of the race in "Midnight Madness" ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Midnight_Madness_(film)#Plot ). Basically, you had to go from station-to-station quickly, answer trivia questions, and solve minor kid-friendly riddles.

But now that I actually try to look it up on the Internet (to provide one of my patented illustrative links) it seems like no information exists about it anywhere under any name, so maybe it was only a local thing that our local Packs did together, and not an overarching thing that all Scouts did. Which, honestly, just makes me think even less of Scouts than I already had.

Oh, and I had a Pinewood Derby racer made up to look like Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters (still do, somewhere in my house, buried in some box or another). Which I suppose was sort of fun and creative, even if it was terribly non-aerodynamic and had no chance to win anything (which I knew in advance).

But the Pinewood Derby always seemed to me to be a case where the Scouts' dads all got to design the racers for them, because none of us were making our own, and none of us really seemed all that invested in the process. I mean, I basically had to create a car I KNEW was going to lose solely to amuse myself by the end of the thing.

A former acting CIA director is comparing President Trump’s speech at the Boy Scouts of America National Jamboree on Monday to a youth rally in an authoritarian country.

John McLaughlin, acting director of the CIA under George Bush, tweeted late Monday that the rally “had the feel of a third world authoritarian's youth rally.”

It's the AVclub, they are entertaining. Plenty of other links though!

By all means listen to his speech for yourself and hear what former scouts are saying about it. Or listen to the booing of a former President (and former scout) and the longwinded partisan dialogue for what was supposed to be a non-partisan event encouraging scouts to keep on scouting

For children especially it should be kept non-partisan. The Boy Scouts of America don't allow partisan speeches to their scouts. Previous presidents have discussed their days as scouts or their admiration for scouts. Not the opposing candidate in the last election, not their disgraced racist old business buddies, not about bills or laws, nor about fake news... Or all of that nonsense.

Following U.S. President Donald Trump’s campaign-style speech at the National Scout Jamboree in West Virginia on Monday evening, the Boy Scouts of America released a statement that did not comment on the president’s remarks but stated that the non-profit organization is “wholly non-partisan and does not promote any one position, product, service, political candidate or philosophy.”

The organization said that it is a “long-standing tradition” to invite the sitting president to speak at the jamboree, a massive gathering of tens of thousands of scouts from around the world that happens every few years, and that a president’s appearance “is in no way an endorsement of any political party or specific policies.” The statement never uses Trump’s name.

“The sitting U.S. President serves as the BSA’s honorary president. It is our long-standing custom to invite the U.S. President to the National Jamboree,” according to the statement, which was posted on Twitter by NBC News on Tuesday morning. A spokesman for the Boy Scouts of America has yet to respond to a request for comment from The Washington Post.

http://www.msn.com/en-us/news/politics/trump's-boy-scouts-speech-broke-with-80-years-of-presidential-tradition/ar-AAoOa88

Franklin Delano Roosevelt used the occasion to talk about good citizenship. Harry S. Truman extolled fellowship: “When you work and live together, and exchange ideas around the campfire, you get to know what the other fellow is like,” he said.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower invoked the “bonds of common purpose and common ideals.” And President George H.W. Bush spoke of “serving others.”

For a brief moment at this year’s jamboree in West Virgina, President Donald Trump indicated that he would follow that tradition — sort of.

“Who the hell wants to speak about politics when I’m in front of the Boy Scouts?” he said.

Then, standing before all 40,000 of them, he bragged about the “record” crowd size, bashed President Barack Obama, criticized the “fake media” and trashed Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign. In the lengthy 35-minute speech, the president threatened to fire his health and human services secretary if he couldn’t persuade members of Congress to vote for the Republican health-care bill.

At one point, he told a rambling story about a conversation he had at a New York cocktail party with a once-successful home builder who “lost his momentum.” The lesson, apparently: “You have to know whether or not you continue to have the momentum. And if you don’t have it, that’s okay.”

A good history of past presidential speeches to the scouts.

No, it sounded like a narcissistic fluff speech with little to do with the scouts or anything grounded in reality. The AVClub sauced it up nicely.

It would have been shitty to sit through that, and I completely understand parents being angry that their children went to hear political partisan talk for a scouting trip.

Obama's address was a minute and a half. Trump talked for over 38 minutes, largely about himself.

That's usually because they have the comprehension skills needed to recognize just how little is actually being said under the fluff, and how little value that meager substance has and/or how objectionable it is. If you just let yourself be caught up in the showmanship and don't think at all about what's being said? Sure it's going to sound awesome, and agreeing with all of the awesome fluff is going to distract from disagreeing with most of the meaningful bits. All of these quotes are pulled out of context, but that's because the context is meaningless patter that would only distract from the quotes, not because it would better validate them.

For fun, this was Barack Obama's entire message in 2010:

Hello everybody.
I wanted to send my greetings to everyone taking part in the national Scout Jamboree at Fort A.P. Hill and congratulate you on the hundredth anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. I hope you've all enjoyed this year's festivities.
You know, for a century, scouts just like you have served your communities and your nation in ways both large and small. During World War II, scouts played a vital role in supporting the war effort at home by running messages and selling war bonds. Some of our nation's greatest heroes have worn the scout uniform, including 11 of the 12 men who have walked on the moon. And today, scouts across the country continue the tradition of collecting food for those in need, improving our neighborhoods, and reaching out to those less fortunate.
That service is worth celebrating. But there's still more to do. Even though we face a different set of challenges than we did 100 years ago, they are no less important. And in the years ahead, we are going to depend on you, the next generation of leaders, to move America forward.
So I hope that all of you will carry the lesson you have learned in scouting with you for the rest of your lives. And I hope that when you're called upon to help write the next great chapter in the American story, you will uphold the best of the scouting tradition and respond with enthusiasm, skill and determination.
Congratulations again on your first 100 years. I'm sure the next 100 will be even better.

And this is only one small part of Trump's speech where he's referring to William Levitt, close friend and noted racist real estate tycoon that has been dead for over 20 years:

In life, in order to be successful -- and you people are well on the road to success -- you have to find out what makes you excited, what makes you want to get up each morning and go to work? You have to find it. If you love what you do and dedicate yourself to your work, then you will gain momentum? And look, you have to. You need the word "momentum." You will gain that momentum. And each success will create another success. The word "momentum."
I'll tell you a story that's very interesting for me. When I was young there was a man named William Levitt. You have some here. You have some in different states. Anybody ever hear of Levittown?
(APPLAUSE)
And he was a very successful man, became unbelievable -- he was a home builder, became an unbelievable success, and got more and more successful. And he'd build homes, and at night he'd go to these major sites with teams of people, and he'd scour the sites for nails, and sawdust and small pieces of wood, and they cleaned the site, so when the workers came in the next morning, the sites would be spotless and clean, and he did it properly. And he did this for 20 years, and then he was offered a lot of money for his company, and he sold his company, for a tremendous amount of money, at the time especially. This is a long time ago. Sold his company for a tremendous amount of money.
And he went out and bought a big yacht, and he had a very interesting life. I won't go any more than that, because you're Boy Scouts so I'm not going to tell you what he did.
(CROWD CHANTING)
Should I tell you? Should I tell you?
(APPLAUSE)
You're Boy Scouts, but you know life. You know life.
So look at you. Who would think this is the Boy Scouts, right? So he had a very, very interesting life, and the company that bought his company was a big conglomerate, and they didn't know anything about building homes, and they didn't know anything about picking up the nails and the sawdust and selling it, and the scraps of wood. This was a big conglomerate based in New York City.
And after about a 10-year period, there were losing a lot with it. It didn't mean anything to them. And they couldn't sell it. So they called William Levitt up, and they said, would you like to buy back your company, and he said, yes, I would. He so badly wanted it. He got bored with this life of yachts, and sailing, and all of the things he did in the south of France and other places. You won't get bored, right? You know, truthfully, you're workers. You'll get bored too, believe me. Of course having a few good years like that isn't so bad.
But what happened is he bought back his company, and he bought back a lot of empty land, and he worked hard at getting zoning, and he worked hard on starting to develop, and in the end he failed, and he failed badly, lost all of his money. He went personally bankrupt, and he was now much older. And I saw him at a cocktail party. And it was very sad because the hottest people in New York were at this party. It was the party of Steve Ross -- Steve Ross, who was one of the great people. He came up and discovered, really founded Time Warner, and he was a great guy. He had a lot of successful people at the party.
And I was doing well, so I got invited to the party. I was very young. And I go in, but I'm in the real estate business, and I see a hundred people, some of whom I recognize, and they're big in the entertainment business.

I immediately recognized that that man was the once great William Levitt, of Levittown, and I immediately went over. I wanted to talk to him more than the Hollywood, show business, communications people.
So I went over and talked to him, and I said, "Mr. Levitt, I'm Donald Trump." He said, "I know." I said, "Mr. Levitt, how are you doing?" He goes, "Not well, not well at all." And I knew that. But he said, "Not well at all." And he explained what was happening and how bad it's been and how hard it's been. And I said, "What exactly happened? Why did this happen to you? You're one of the greats ever in our industry. Why did this happen to you?"
And he said, "Donald, I lost my momentum. I lost my momentum." A word you never hear when you're talking about success when some of these guys that never made 10 cents, they're on television giving you things about how you're going to be successful, and the only thing they ever did was a book and a tape. But I tell you -- I'll tell you, it was very sad, and I never forgot that moment.
And I thought about it, and it's exactly true. He lost his momentum, meaning he took this period of time off, long, years, and then when he got back, he didn't have that same momentum.
In life, I always tell this to people, you have to know whether or not you continue to have the momentum. And if you don't have it, that's OK. Because you're going to go on, and you're going to learn and you're going to do things that are great. But you have to know about the word "momentum."
But the big thing, never quit, never give up; do something you love. When you do something you love as a Scout, I see that you love it. But when you do something that you love, you'll never fail. What you're going to do is give it a shot again and again and again. You're ultimately going to be successful.
And remember this, you're not working. Because when you're doing something that you love, like I do -- of course I love my business, but this is a little bit different. Who thought this was going to happen. We're, you know, having a good time. We're doing a good job.
(APPLAUSE)
Doing a good job. But when you do something that you love, remember this, it's not work. So you'll work 24/7. You're going to work all the time. And at the end of the year you're not really working. You don't think of it as work. When you're not doing something that you like or when you're forced into do something that you really don't like, that's called work, and it's hard work, and tedious work.
So as much as you can do something that you love, work hard and never ever give up, and you're going to be tremendously successful, tremendously successful.
(APPLAUSE)
Now, with that, I have to tell you our economy is doing great. Our stock market has picked up since the election, November 8th -- do we remember that day? Was that a beautiful day?
(APPLAUSE)
What a day.
Do you remember that famous night on television, November 8th where they said, these dishonest people, where they said, there is no path to victory for Donald Trump. They forgot about the forgotten people.
By the way, they're not forgetting about the forgotten people anymore. They're going crazy trying to figure it out, but I told them, far too late; it's far too late.
But you remember that incredible night with the maps, and the Republicans are red and the Democrats are blue, and that map was so red it was unbelievable. And they didn't know what to say.

As bizarre as that story is, this anecdote is about a long-dead real estate developer famous for issues with only renting/selling to whites.

what a bizarre thing to talk to children about

Surely we've all realized that he only ever talks about things that he thinks makes him sound awesome/manly/cool and isn't actually talking to whoever's in the room with him...?
