A studio in Boston is $2,000 a month... TWO GRAND

WHY WHY WHY

Nobody can afford these places unless they have no fuckin bills to pay (i.e students who's parent's foot the bill).

I understand we have Harvard, MIT, etc and that attracts the wealthy elite but the fact that people are being pushed out the city because they can't afford to live here anymore is driving rent outside here too

Shit sucks peeps

Where I live is probably about the same. Thanks solely to my dad, I don't have to be poor, but I'd be so fucked otherwise!

My first 1 bedroom apartment in my city was around $760 a month. Nice neighborhood, within walking distance of food, gym, groceries, and target. Had to drive to the closest game store, but that was it. I think I was also 20 minutes from work.

I moved out when they raised the rent to over $800 a month. Figured if I am going to spend that much I might as well get a mortgage, so I bought my current house.

wtf that house must've been decently priced since minimum mortgage payments here are at least $1000, and that's being generous

I usually see $1800+ when reviewing mortgage files in MA

Yeah, it's insane how much it varies. An attached townhouse here is around $600k... Meanwhile, some communities have big houses in the five figure range...

Depends on the size of the house and the location, if you are within "city limits" mortgages are around $500 - $800 a month. Suburbs are typically more.

I actually got a huge raise as I was house hunting so I raised my budget. My current mortgage is ~$1250 a month for a 3 bedroom on about 1/2 an acre. The only reason it is that high is because my taxes account for about 1/3 of the mortgage.

Nope, Northern Virginia is a killer.
Parents are moving out near Vegas soon, and they'll probably be able to get a mansion for the same price as their average three bedroom they have over here.

Also in Chicago, my current 1-bedroom is $1,100. Older building with some plumbing and wiring issues, but the square footage is worth it.

Sure beats the $1,600 400 square foot studios in DC.

Olympia WA actually has a pretty low cost of living and decently high min wage.

You can get a 1 bedroom for about $900, but there are some for at little as 799$ (very hard to find though). You'll probably average at 1k though.

That being said, my house is a 3 bedroom + office, with 2 living rooms, 3 bathrooms, 2 kitchens, walk in closet, and basement area (+garage), and I could only rent the whole thing for about $2k a month if I wanted (and it has an amazing view of pugents sound from the upstairs balconies/bedroom/livingroom).

You can probably rent a room around here for $500 if you really pushed it.

You could not get a very small apartment in Gilroy CA (Bay area) for much less then the cost of where I live right now.

Cost of living varies GREATLY. There are certainly places cheaper then Olympia as well. You can probably find places where you could rent a 1 bedroom for $500 without too much trouble.

Dear lord. I could trade my car for a house (if I moved)... My retirement plan is simply to sell my parents' house and move to a cheap area. House prices here slow down, but they never really drop (and they've more or less run out of room). I wouldn't want the burden of paying property taxes out the ass for a place that's too crowded for my liking anyway. The house is probably worth nearly $1M right now, and by then who knows (though at the rate things are going, a developer will probably buy it and the nearby properties to put townhouses or apartments up - though my dad said he wouldn't want to move, so the money would need to be there).

Sigh, it's stream of conciousness typing.

Even on this ergonomic keyboard (which makes me type slower), I type faster then I talk, so even short posts end up being super long by accident. I do try and restrain myself, but if I don't think about it (like if I'm interested in a topic) BAM....super long post.

>_>

Pretty much the whole Northeast is represented there, so I'd have to move far. I hear Arizona is nice this time of year, though... >_>

California is huge so that really drops the average cost down significantly. It's extremely high in the bay area, but places like redding etc reduce the average.

My wife, when I first met her, was renting a home in Apple Valley Ca (A townhouse) for $500 a month, that was almost 20 years ago though. Still there are places in Ca that are not that expensive.

I feel like grouping cost of living by state is kind of misleading. For example, the only reason Vermont is on there is because of Burlington and the Lake Champlain area. Everywhere else is dirt cheap. Also as far as NY, as long as you don't live in NYC the whole state is cheap. In fact there are a few cities that rank on the lowest cost of living in the country. I live in one of them.

I don't know if my COL is high or low, since I'm in central Alberta, but I pay $800/mo rent, about $160 on additional utilities and the rest goes into either savings or recreational... eating.

Yeah, it needs to be city vs. rural separation at least. I live near Vancouver, but if you head north or east and don't mind a more redneck setting, you can save a boatload and get something nicer.
