So yeah, I was born and raised (and still live with) in a Muslim family. But...well, I'm not a very pious person, and I'm surprised how my Muslim friends either justify drinking or just do it without any justification. So there was a party today and I was with a very close friend of mine, so I figured a sip won't hurt.

The drinks were red wine, white rum, tequila, dry gin, Absolut, and finally coke with rum (she wanted to make mojito but we ran out of Sprite).

Long story short, they all (except the one with coke) taste terrible. I just tried very tiny sips, like maybe a quarter of a teaspoon. The stronger ones felt like they were burning my tongue and mouth, the weaker ones just taste bad and vaguely like a medicine...or a cleaning agent. After trying tequila, I said to her that it was like licking the floor of a hospital.

The coke with rum was surprisingly good/bearable. I took several sips. The coke taste is strong, and the rum just adds a slightly dangerous feel to it.

I think I got slightly drunk just from the atmosphere and excitement (and placebo), but not really from the alcohol (or at least I hope not, I had very little, I've eaten before, and I'm kinda big). Nobody else got really drunk either.

But the experience was worth it. Now I know what they taste like. As a writer (sometimes), I appreciate knowing firsthand what they taste like (and the words 'burning' and 'poison' commonly used to refer to alcohol are very accurate).

And would I try them again? ...drinks with them, maybe. But not on their own.

I can't stand beer, I've tried to drink it but god damn it's so disgusting I want to barf.

However, hard lemonade is tolerable and often even enjoyable for me.

I guess I'm just someone who needs his alcoholic drinks to be sweet. </shrug>

I prefer sweet too but I take it further. Rather than hard lemonade, straight lemonade flavored vodka lol. It's reasonably strong (30%) and doesn't require mixing, though if I have stuff like iced tea or club soda, I may add a splash or two.

Rum wine and hard lemonade are great (particularly the right kind of wine. I think I am in the same boat as bowser as I seem to prefer sweeter alcoholic drinks)

Not a fan of beer though. Don't know if its an acquired taste or whatever but yeah, don't like it

Do I count as a beer snob if I just can't stand any beer?

Even if it's, say, due to sensory issues that make the bitter taste far more prominent than it should be?

Also, fun fact, I have relatives on both sides of the family who were/are alcoholics so the fact that I'm not addicted to alcohol is actually a very good sign.

Fun fact: I've never gotten to the full blown drunk stage. I've only ever gone to "buzzed".

Partly because I have no idea how I'll act when drunk and I'm not curious enough to want to find out. And being buzzed has that vague unpleasantness to it that I'm worried will intensify if I go any further.

I prefer hard alcohol as the quickest way to get drunk because the higher concentration of alcohol means you need less liquid to get drunk.

I agree with Luster Soldier here, as my lemonade vodka is still hard liquor, at 30% as opposed to most unflavored liquor which is typically 40-50%, but is still sweet and good -tasting without requiring mixing agents such as soda or juice, which would dilute the alcohol, meaning I would have to consume a larger total volume of liquid in order to achieve the ideal level of intoxication.

I also sometimes buy beer when it is hot out, because it is refreshing to down an ice cold beer upon arriving home after a long walk from the bus stop after work. In these cases, I typically consume just one beer for refreshment before switching to vodka.

I'm with you, Raka. Anything that's an "acquired taste" is probably a taste you shouldn't acquire. You've gotten the pressure of curiosity off, you've realized it all tastes like ass, and you don't have any pressing desire to know what it feels like to be drunk.

Although, as a (sometimes) writer myself, it is amusing when I have to ask other people to help me describe what my characters are experiencing. Fortunately, I have friends who understand and are willing to help me with that (even if they otherwise suck for helping with writing.)

Only time I've legitimately had a drink was the night before my best friend's wedding. We were having a really tame, lame "bachelor party" -- just me and two other guys walking around Miami, and we happened to stop in a bar, and he asked me to share a drink with him. For anyone else, I wouldn't have done it. I had one mixed drink, it wasn't actually as bad as some of the crap I've smelled or tasted before, and I felt okay afterwards, but I had no desire to repeat the experience. Plus, I know what kind of self-control I have, and I fear if I really allowed myself to experience getting drunk, I'd like it enough to turn into an alcoholic. Yeah, screw that.

@azuarc

There's a big difference between drinking for taste and drinking to get drunk. A lot of people get exposed to cheap, awful alcohol, but that's not representative of the whole. And there are some amazing cocktails, especially nowadays as cocktails have begun to get more popular.

Also, to say that nothing that's an acquired taste is worth it...do you also not like coffee or dark chocolate?

Red wine - generally really bad and bitter unless you know which are good
White rum - very chemical flavor, try dark rum instead
Tequila - absolutely disgusting, like liquid insect juice
Dry gin - it tastes like a christmas tree, which can be both nice and disgusting
Absolut - also very chemical but with the right technique can taste like nothing when doing shots
Coke & rum - easily the best beginner's drink, it's just sweet and vanillaish

In general you kinda only had shitty alcohol and missed out on the most important alcohol tastes, if we're talking research purposes. Bourbon whiskey is the #1 that you should try to really feel the burn... one that travels down your whole body down to your nerves, not just tingling in your throat. And then also some strong hoppy beer. Those are actually delicious and not just "durr let's get dr0nk".

That being said, alcohol is really terrible and other drugs have way better/healthier effects. Although when it comes to anxiety there's no competition with alcohol... and it also makes food super delicious.

When I'm drunk, I can pretty much enjoy myself in almost any circumstances, my mood is almost always above average and I am pretty laid back. When I'm not drunk, my ability to enjoy stuff in general is sporadic and my temper is awful and being in a good mood is somewhat uncommon. This has been the case my entire life though and I only started drinking regularly in my 20s.
