Can some one sum up for me why this airplane kerfuffle is news right now? From what I've gathered it sounds like a man was asked to get off a plane, he refused, so they removed him. Sounds fair to me.

United needed to fly four of its employees, so they asked passengers that had already bought their tickets and were sitting on the plane to volunteer to leave. Nobody accepted the shitty offer of $800 so they decided to send in police officers to go in and forcibly remove a 69 year old doctor.

There are ways to deal with that situation. One is to simply have four seats already on hold just for employees. Another would be to ask if anybody wants to give up their seat BEFORE they board the plane.

The way they handled it was just stupid on all levels, and clearly created a huge PR disaster for them.

Flight was fully booked. United wanted to replace passengers with employees that were slated to work on a flight in another state. Passengers did not want to accept offer of $800 and hotel stay for leaving voluntarily. United runs lottery to decide who gets forced off of flight. Lottery falls on the doctor who was supposed to be at a hospital the next morning. Doctor tries to refuse, so United called security to rough him up before taking him off of flight instead. CEO lies about situation.

The end.

In addition, 1) he wasn't just roughed up, he was concussed and bleeding, to the extent that (after the police managed to lose track of him) he re-boarded the plane confused and bleeding saying that he needs to get home, 2) he had patients that he needed to see back home and 3) the airline tried to orchestrate the whole bumping people off the plane thing after everyone had already boarded.

In short, United wanted to get a few of their employees on the full plane, but no one wanted to give up their seat. So, United had security/police escorts people off. The doctor, who apparently had to get home to see patients in the morning, refused to get off. So, they beat his ass and dragged him off by force.

And now United is choosing to downplay the incident and make the passenger look like the bad guy.

This is a practice that is somewhat common in the industry, unfortunately. Most of the time things do not transpire to what we've witnessed in this incident. I'm sure the airline regrets what has happened (too little too late, though)

I'm not an aviation expert, but I do know that airlines operate under small margins and consistently overbook flights to compensate for no shows. Jet fuel alone on any given flight costs thousands.

Honestly, heres the truth... United is a budget airline and they're already running on razor thin margins. If you want to fly cheap then overbooking is the risk you take. At most, these people should get a refund and nothing more. Of course we live in the age of entitlement so people think they're special and don't have to follow the rules of security personnel. This guy must think he's the only doctor in the world capable of doing his job. He's obviously not even a good doctor if he's flying budget in the first place. He wasn't needed anywhere near as much as people are crying.

If he would have followed the god damned rules he wouldn't have gotten roughed up for causing a disturbance. Not only will he not get a dime, he better pray he isn't charged with creating a disturbance on an aircraft and barred from flying for life with multiple felony charges.
