Yes, I AM TROLLING, but I also legitimately don't know the answer to this question and would like your perspective. The question is:

Do you consider me to be white?

A few facts about myself:

- I was born in Baghdad, Iraq.
- I am not Muslim.
- My mother's side is Catholic.
- My father's side is Armenian Orthodox (Christian Church of Armenia).
- I was raised Catholic to an extent, but we didn't take religion super seriously.
- Culturally, I was very much Arabic before moving to America. I've been a naturalized American citizen for about 16 years.
- I don't know much about my ethnic background, but I've been told it's largely Armenian.
- I have an Arabic first name (Yousif) and Armenian last name (Muradian).

Growing up in the U.S. (we moved here when I was 7), I always considered myself a brown person, but certain members of my family insist that we are Caucasian. I need Board 8 to settle the score once and for all, thanks.

It occurs to me I'm not even really what sure Caucasian specifically means. Like, I feel like it's supposed to mean something more than simply "white people" but maybe not?

we had a sizable Armenian population when i was in high school. i had a psychology class and the unit was about self-identity or something. the teacher said "stand up if you identify as Caucasian, etc."

When he said Caucasian, one Armenian kid stood up and there were like four other Armenian kids who asked him what he was doing and told him to sit back down. He asked them, "Then what are we?!" They couldn't answer.

The US Census would classify you as white/Caucasian, but I would not.

In SephG's racism encyclopedia, only the following races exist:

-Hispanic

For clarification, the US Census and ethnographers consider White/Caucasian to include people of European descent, Arab descent, Hispanics (but only those of mixed Native American or African-American heritage), and I think people of Indian descent.

So yeah, you'd absolutely be considered White by the government, but probably not by the vast majority of Americans.

Caucasian is a really bad term to use here I'd say, since it can mean both 'white' and/or 'of the Caucuses.' Armenians definitely fall under the latter.

This group includes a lot of the Arab countries, which many would consider non-white. If I knew your name I'd definitely consider you non-white.

I hate the term 'caucasian.' It's basically outdated and doesn't mean s*** anymore. Armenians are actually "caucasian" as f***, because Armenia is literally from the region of Caucasus. But then people use it to only mean f***ing pure-as-snow white, and not the ever-so-slightly-brown white that comes out of that southern europe/western asia region.

looking at that picture, you're white.

you're still probably going to face discrimination because of name/origin but that doesn't matter for whiteness; non-whites don't have a monopoly on discrimination. (see, e.g., european jews, who are generally white)

"Culturally white" moreso than genetically...but culturally white needs a better term too.


One of my best friends goes through a similar issue with her family. She's half-white and half-black -- light-skinned, but not passing for white skin with anybody either. Her mother's family is all quite white and they were who raised her too; she's culturally white in that way. They've tried to convince her she's white all her life because of this, and she hates that s***. I think half the reason she keeps me in her life is because I tell her there's no question she's black.

Off the back of this topic, I was interested to see if there was a legal definition of white and according to census.gov:

White – A person having origins in any of the original peoples of Europe, the Middle East, or North Africa.

So, you're legally considered white in America, for what it's worth.

yeah I imagine it must have been a long time ago. probably why I don't remember it. doesn't seem like it would take much convincing though. if someone tells me they are black I wouldn't have any reason to doubt the. I guess if I saw a picture and they look white I'd be like 'are you sure'

Regarding any census questions: I would always mark "Asian" as a kid because I was certain I wasn't white and I was born in the continent of Asia. I also knew it was weird but it seemed a more accurate answer than white.

Don't remember. Nowadays (after understanding that I'm "officially" white in the eyes of the US gov), I either check white or decline it altogether. I'm not even sure if I was asked the ethnicity question for college apps, as I applied only in California and I believe affirmative action is illegal there. It wouldn't have mattered for me anyway because my SAT was solid and I didn't apply to top schools.

Its hard to remember, it was probably a decade ago at this point. IIRC You had thought that I was black for one reason or another, and you kept asking me and I didn't respond. Then Maria asked me in a private aim, and I admitted that I was, and that I didn't like to talk about it or bring it up because I was afraid people would treat me differently.

Then I asked maria if she wanted to see a picture of my dad, and sent a picture of gmun.
