I agree with the write-up about PatF, but I still would've placed it at least above Snow White, oh well.

Songs were pretty good IMO, especially Friends on the Other Side, Dig a Little Deeper and Almost There. They're not close to my top favorites, but they're really nice.

I also like Tiana a lot, she might be a little obsessed with work (and it's better to be obsessed with work than being spoiled and bored brats that come up with awful ideas without considering the consequences *hint*) but she's also smart and witty, unlike most Disney princesses.

Next... I'm guessing Jungle Book.

Yeah, I knew you and Gen would disagree based on your love for the songs, and I had a feeling darkx liked it a lot as well.

By the way, did you ever get around to seeing The Thief and the Cobbler, darkx? I saw it on Netflix and none of the reviews looked very favorable. I'm also seeing Brave in a few hours! Has anyone here managed to see it yet?

I'm very okay with this one :-). I'm not really fond of the movie, might me because I've only seen it twice, while I've seen my favorites 10 times or more.

But the write-up quite fits me: not-so great songs, some nice characters and not-so-fond of the South :-P

Aughhhh.

To be fair, part of my love of the movie comes from the fact that I'd just started living in New Orleans when it came out, so I understand the whole culture disconnect thing. But PatF would be way higher on my list.

Doc: I've actually seen the "recobbled" version of The Thief and the Cobbler, and that movie is pretty damn good. A little overlong, and obviously the unfinished sections they put in are distracting just because they're...well, unfinished, but I feel like if it had been finished in that state, it would be really good. Unfortunately, it wasn't, and I've seen clips of the "regular" version of the movie, and by all accounts it looks awful.

Talking animals? Oh no, big a** talking snake and Iago. Aladdin is totally next.

Real guess. Great Mouse Detective.

I agree with the placement. If I ever tallied up my rankings, I'm pretty sure P&tF would be within plus or minus three spots from here. It's a really good movie, but it just is missing something. I'm not as wild about Facilier as some others, but that's not it. I can't quite put my finger on it.

Alright, well if I don't share my thoughts on PatF now I won't get to in this topic I guess. Just wasn't prepared (at all) to do it this low.

This film is really great, and lately I've heard several people say not so great things about it. I partially blame Tangled's success in a way, since it outperformed PatF both critically and commercially people now can write PatF off as not being actually as good as it was made out to be. It has all the intangibles the great Renaissance favorites did; leads with personality, a villain with stage presence and an enjoyable soundtrack.

Naveen and Tiana were a great couple in my opinion. The premise is unique; hard-working girl and arrogant, lazy prince. I found Tiana to be very endearing personally speaking, most princess characters are looking for love. That goes from the classics in Snow White and Cinderella to the modern day fan favorites in Belle and Jasmine. All in some way dream of the fairytale romance and long for the dashing prince to make their lives better. Tiana wants to make her own life better by doing it herself, and in my book there is NO princess with a better message to send to young girls than Tiana.

I found Naveen very likable once he started to realize he was largely wrong and that his predicament was his own doing. His attempted proposal when they were frogs and the end scene where he tells Charlotte that he wants to make sure Tiana gets her dream because she is his Evangeline (this is also touching because he did it in such a way as to not let Charlotte know his true feelings, since at this point he had reformed into a gentleman).

Facilier has all the flare from the Renaissance period as well. Few villains have a better song than he does and his plans are a little different from the typical villain. While he desires power as many Disney Villain alumni do, his life is also on the line due to his shadowy pact. He's also of but a few villains to actually kill one of the heroes during the course of the film, and his death scene is perhaps one of the scariest and most wicked out there.

Semi-rant, first real disappointment in placement on this list (at least the only one that truly surprised me, anyway).

I'm curious, charon, where would you place it on such a list? #22 doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it by any means, only that I clearly didn't enjoy the songs, characters or atmosphere as much as you did. While she may provide a good message to little girls, Tiana came across as a little stubborn at times and boring at others. In fact the whole film did. Again, I think that comes with my lack of appreciation for the southern vibe the film evolved around. I'll give you that Facilier is a great villain. Like I said, I love his gimmicks and persona. But you know what I wanted more of? A little more interaction between himself and the heroes. Tiana is the film's heroine but she hardly interacts with him at all. Naveen has the moment with Facilier when Friends on the Other Side plays, but after that it feels like Lawrence is more of the primary antagonist towards Naveen than Facilier is. Facilier is mostly lurking in the shadows for the entire film, letting others do the work for him. Different strokes, I suppose. I'm curious to see where he winds up on your list.

Karo, have you abandoned this topic? I'm interested to see where you placed the previous two.

Also Brave was very mediocre. Too bad.

Well, I am from the South so maybe that helps some with the endearment of the film. The film isn't perfect, and its major flaw is that Facilier doesn't directly antagonize the film's leads enough as you said. A great moment, a view of what could have been, was near the end when Facilier uses his powers to show Tiana a vision of her dream and offer her the deal to take it. I enjoy villains who try to lure the hero in with promises of glory, especially when it is all that character ever really wanted (so she thought at least).

I know a long while back you said the rest of the films would be ones you mostly enjoyed and liked, so yeah that's fine. I'd have probably ranked it higher though... without actually doing a list and seeing it in front of me, it's hard to say exactly where I'd place it. Top 10 material for me though, at the least.

I absolutely agree with you here. I didn't mention it in the write-up but that may have been my favorite scene in the film. It's probably that or the segment with "My Belle Evangeline."

I'm curious to see what you think about it, Poke. I mean, it's certainly better than the Cars franchise, and I liked it more than Ratatouille... I don't know, there were only a few touching scenes and it reminded me too much of a film I watched a month ago.

Fantasia 2000

Doc's Ranking: 23/51
Karo's Ranking: 28/49

A very hit and miss Fantasia sequel that, with two major exceptions, fails to live up to the original.

'Beethoven's 5th Symphony'

A scene featuring abstract butterfly-like creatures. The big attraction here is the music, with the very well known 'dun-dun-dun-DUNNNN' beginning.

'Pines of Rome'

Aka the 'flying whale' scene. A fairly good segment, certainly one of the most original.

'Rhapsody in Blue'

The second best segment here, one of only two that make this film worth watching. The scene is drawn in a retro style, and follows four different characters who are unhappy with their current lot in life, and ends with them all having their dreams fulfilled.

'The Steadfast Tin Soldier'

This is the big turd of the movie. Trashy CGI animation that is some of the worst ever done in a feature film has no business sullying the good name of Fantasia.

'The Carnival of the Animals'

Flamingos with yo-yos. You would think this would be automatically awesome, but sadly, this remains a quite mediocre segment.

'Pomp and Circumstance'

Aka 'Noah's Apprentice'. Donald helps Noah load his ark, and hilarity ensues. Sort of a homage to classic Donald Duck cartoons.

'Firebird Suite'

The original Fantasia saved the best segment for last, and 2000 is no different, as it finishes with a stunning scene where an anime-ish nature sprite clashes with a volcanic firebird spirit. This scene simply has the most beautiful animation you will ever see anywhere.

The Princess and the Frog

Doc's Ranking: 22/51
Karo's Ranking: 9/49

After Disney pissed away the better part of the decade creating heaps of garbage, we finally get a delightful return to all the things that made that made the Disney Renaissance great. Incredible characters, beautiful animation, it's all there. The one area that this movie fails to reach the level of the early Renaissance movies is in the songs, which sadly, are not really anything special.
Another thing of note about this movie is the shocking character death at the end. Most real, permanent deaths in Disney movies are simply deus ex machina to move the plot forward and generally involve bumping off the main character's parents (who have an incredibly high mortality rate in Disney movies, btw). This time, however, the death is just for sadness, and more importantly, it helps dispel the aura of invincibility that generally surrounds the good guys in Disney movies. Now when I see a future Disney movie, I will actually feel concerned when he heroes are in danger, instead of just 'lol, they're the good guys, they'll be alright'.

Best Character: Naveen

One of the funniest Disney characters in recent memory, womanizing slacker Naveen serves as the perfect foil to the practical Tiana, and has most of the funny lines in the movie. Remember, it's not slime, it's mucus!

Worst Character: Lawrence

He's just simply boring, ordinary, and seems completely out of place in the whole feel of the film. The one black mark on the character design in this movie.

Oh hey as a person who watched Princess and the Frog lately or the first time I'll explain why I don't like it very much: It bored me.

It is very right to say that the movie got back to some of the components that made Disney great, and in many ways it has a leg up on a lot of the movies from the previous eight or so years prior to its release. Unlike a lot of people I didn't have any real perspective on Tangled's success as I watched it after.

I am from the south, but I guess Florida doesn't really count, and I like the southern feel to the movie. I just think for long parts in the middle of the movie it is just utterly boring. The characters waste my time. The movie has a good villain, the lead can sing, but they just don't really fit the parts together right. Also I can never rank a movie higher for things like "character deaths could happen in future movies." It just doesn't enter my mind at all, as each movie is independent of another in my eyes. Also I'd label it as a pointless death for the most part.

Not a bad movie by any stretch but a lot of flaws, and Tiana should have sung more.

#21 – Winnie the Pooh (2011)

Best Character: Owl
Worst Character: Rabbit

I love the Winnie the Pooh series. It basically encapsulated my childhood, and I feel guilty for placing the film just outside the top 20 (as high a placement as that actually is). My placement of the original slightly eases my guilt however; I promise you it won’t be making an appearance for a while. Unfortunately the most recent film in the Winnie the Pooh series places here at #21, but that is in no way indicative that this film is bad by any means.

It really is a great throwback to the original. I love that they maintained the interaction between Pooh and the narrator (John Cleese is amazing by the way), and seeing Pooh interact with the environment of the storybook is hilarious. I love the way the film plays on words. Having the letters drop into the hole and allowing the characters to climb up them to escape was a nice touch, and I especially love how the letters used to climb line up to say “And so they all used the letter ladder to climb out of the pit.” The film does a great job at creating little jokes with the audience, most often without the characters realizing it. The song introducing the Backson, for example, ends with the line “we’ll be back soon.” Such are the little things that really make me love this film.

As far as the characters go, let me just preface this by saying that Owl has never been among my favorite characters from the Hundred Acre Woods – that’s how good he is in this one. He went from being my sixth or so favorite character to shooting up to third overall. Owl offers nonstop hilarity and steals every scene he’s in. He is hilariously manipulative, having the ability to convince any of the other characters of just about anything he wants. Some of my favorite Owl scenes include: where he’s writing his memoirs and Pooh and Eeyore think Owl is sneezing every time he says “issue”; again where he’s writing his memoirs and says aloud, “Chapter 1: The Birth of a Genius”; and of course when he’s in the hole with the rest of the characters and neglects to simply fly out. At one point he even flies out of the hole to give Piglet a rousing speech only to then return into the hole without himself or anyone else realizing he left the hole in the first place. All they do is commend him on his brilliant speech. Not to mention without Owl there wouldn’t be any kind of plot or villain at all. Not only does he invent the Backson simply because he can’t read Christopher Robin’s letter, but he’s also the one that takes Eeyore’s tail! If there’s a villain among the characters of the Hundred Acre Woods, it’s gotta be Owl.

Alright, enough about Owl. The other characters have their bright spots as well. Winnie the Pooh has always been my favorite character from the Hundred Acre Woods, and he’s still incredibly charming in this film. His obsession with honey is pretty much his only defining goal during the film, but it’s still funny watching him struggle to get some. I loved the part at the end where the film tried to imply that Christopher Robin was going to give Pooh the honey pot only to give it to the balloon instead. Top tier trolling right there, Christopher Robin. Eventually Pooh just snaps and begins to replace every word with honey. Funny stuff. I wish there were more scenes with Tigger in them, but he does a good job with what time he has. I enjoyed the moments Piglet had to shine, especially when he was the only one of the characters not trapped in the hole. Piglet is hilariously useless at getting his friends out of the hole: first getting a flower, than getting a huge book (satisfying Rabbit’s demand of something long), and then he cuts the rope into smaller pieces so they can all get out with their individual pieces. I also love the dynamic between him and Pooh, as Pooh is pretty much able to take advantage of Piglet nonstop and Piglet just goes along with it smiling. Unfortunately there has to be a “worst” character here, and I’ve got to pick Rabbit only because I feel like he deviated the most from his original character. He was a little too silly at times and it didn’t really seem like the Rabbit I knew and loved.

In terms of comparing the film to the original, the songs aren’t quite up to snuff. While I do love Zooey Deschanel and really enjoy her rendition of the intro song, it just doesn’t compare to the original. Her voice does match the feeling of the Hundred Acre Woods though, so it’s not a bad fit by any means. I mentioned it briefly above, but the song introducing the Backson is my favorite of the film. It contains the best animation in the film, mixing excitement, creativity and comedy into one song. The rest of the songs aren’t as memorable as the ones in the original, but they’re still decent. I think the way Zooey sings them tends to make them fall more to the background than the way the songs from the original were presented.

Alright, I have to stop now. I could write about these characters for days and I still have the original film to write up. My only real complaint is that the film is too short, but what we get is a lot of fun. This film is funny. This film is charming. This film is a great sequel. Go see it.

Also this movie makes honey look really tasty.

Next Up: This film’s title is the same as the name of its main character.

I laughed for days seeing his little thought bubble with him saving everyone, getting a crown, bag of money, and all the bunny b****es. And his reactions to Piglet's useless items. And him seemingly about to lose his mind over Owl flying out of the hole, only to congratulate him on a great speech. Rabbit was stellar.

You mean like ****ing SNOW WHITE

It is NOT at top 20 movie in this canon, I struggle to think it is a top 40 movie in this canon, and I bet if I actually THINK about this long enough, it is not a top ****ing 45 ,movie in this canon. It is objectively bad when compared to almost every other movie Disney did, and right now, we are SERIOUSLY looking at a chance you rank this drivel over The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, or The Lion King.....

I kind of want Snow White to be ranked up high now because this is pretty funny.

Nope! The full title is Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs so it's not eligible for #20.

I don't think that's anything to worry about. If I had to guess, the Big Four Renaissance films are going to occupy the top 5, along with Peter Pan.
