Edit: Also nah, +4 to healing surge value isn't that useful for me, my base surge value is fine as it is, and I basically get an untyped +2/+4/+6/+8/+10 etc, etc, for each surge I have already spent.

Incidentally, I ended up offhanding a Weapon of Speed, which is a great item even if I can't easily turn the RBA into a lightning attack. That way I can pick up Unarmored Agility, since losing the artifact means cutting my defenses.

Actually learned something cool while looking at stuff on character builder, I can pick up a Firewind Blade instead of a Flaming Weapon... and then take a Blazing Arc Ki focus which has the same effect as a flaming weapon, which lets Firewind blade churn out 5 fire damage to anything adjacent to me for each hit with it. Neat!

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, but I think I read that you can't use a ki focus and weapon property at the same time, that you can use your weapon as a weapon and gets its enchantment or as a ki focus and get your ki focus's enchantment, but not both.

It depends, but the way this particular combination works is...

Firewind Blade's property inherently goes off when the weapon is used in an attack that hits.

Blazing Arc Ki focus' item power is an at-will free action when you make a melee attack.

An attack with a weapon substituting a ki focus' power is legit, because both instances of triggers are being met.

Doesn't work like that. The Blazing Arc focus is constantly active. Rules:

"You can add its enhancement bonus to the attack rolls and damage rolls of weapon attacks you make using a weapon with which you have proficiency. However, you must choose to use the enhancement bonus, properties and powers of the ki focus, rather than the weapon you're wielding, or vice-versa. You can't use both when you use a power."

Read this again. Here, quoting and bolding so you can see it:

'you must choose to use the enhancement bonus, properties and powers of the ki focus, rather than the weapon you're wielding, or vice-versa'

EDIT: In other words, you don't cherrypick. Use a fraction of the magic item, be it a focus or blade, and you gotta use the whole.

Not really. It's stupider to allow people to gain double weapon enchantments by using a Ki Focus, don't you think? Imagine if I could use a focus AND my artifact blade. **** would be nuts if I could use two weapon abilities at the same time.

It's... the entire basis for what I've been doing. Using the property of the dazzling/chill wind longswords but using the enhancement bonus of the ki focus. Using the power on hungry spear with the enhance of the ki focus...

I don't think you're getting the rules, Accel. Here's how they work.

A) You can use Enhancement bonus and crit dice of a ki focus in place of a weapon's. No surprises here.
B) You can use a weapon's power and/or properties when attacking with the weapon. Same.
C) You can use the ki focus' powers and properties when attacking with a weapon. Fine.
D) You cannot do B and C at the same time.

That's it. A plays no part in Rule D.

Okay I think I get it now.

If I have a basic Magic Ki Focus +X, and a weapon with a property...

I can apply that weapon's properties with my attacks while still using the Ki Focus's enhancement. But not any of the ki focus's properties or powers.

Alright. So everything I have done so far is legal but my firewind blade idea is not. Shame.

Then I attack and use the properties of say, a blazing arc ki focus to make it fire damage. Would theweapon like, stop giving the bonus to initiative (not that it matters) until the duration of that attack finished or something?

Also what if my weapon has a dragonshard augment on it, do dragonshards count as a weapon property or a state-based effect of their own?

No, because it's not a property related to using a power. And yes, Dragonshards count on their own.

So I realized that I never took a theme for Quentyn... Went with Escaped Thrall for now, since it has some good benefits and is at least somewhat thematically appropriate. That might change in the future, though.
