Admittedly, it does seems like TV companies are forcing people to pay more by not making as many non HDTVs anymore. I barely see anything in K-Mart besides HD ones, and they're still not as cheap as my standard one was when I bought it, even if you adjust for inflation.

My parents don't own an HDTV because we have this huge TV armoire and to fit an HDTV in there would mean it would be really small.

As for me I don't own one cause I spend my money elsewhere.

I paid like $450 for my 32" 1080p HDTV. In 2009.

I had been looking into TVs for years prior, and the prices definitely fell.

I don't think HDTVs are particularly expensive if you shop around.

I'm pretty sure that I saw a lot of standard TVs go on sale at that time, as they were pushing HDTVs because of the then upcoming switch to all-digital.

I remember when I was looking at TVs like that back in the early-mid 2000s. They were something like $1500, and were not 120hz.

TV prices have definitely dropped.

Yeah i use a 32" 720p tv that I bought probably 6 or 7 years and it was like 700 bucks at the time. If you saw that price on this tv today you would laugh and go buy twice the tv for half the price.

Also at what store would you even find a SD tv these days? These days if you buy a new tv isnt it pretty much a guarantee that it will be hd? I think you would have to actively go out of your way to even find a brand new sdtv somewhere.

There's a couple of reasons I don't own an HDTV:

1) Input lag on HDTVs really bothers me. I have yet to really figure out how to make rhythm games work on an HDTV as effectively as I want them to.

2) Every time I have enough money to buy something expensive, TV is not my top priority. I play more PC games nowadays than console games and I don't watch a lot of TV, so TVs are a low priority for me. My PC is tricked out, and my PC's monitor is arguably better than my TV, which is exactly how I want it because I spend a lot more time looking at it.

I'm not like some kind of crazy anti-HDTV person who thinks all TVs should be CRT, HDTVs are nice, but I can't just go buy every nice thing I want and upgrading my TV is not high on my list.

You can make it look just as good but admittedly it takes some tweaking (and an S-Video cable!).

EDIT: An S-Video cable for your SNES will also improve how it looks on a CRT, if you have that input.

I could have sworn I found a way to plug my SNES into my TV via component at some point years ago but now I'm pretty sure I was just imagining it.

But seriously though, Super Mario World practically pops at me on my 2007 Trinitron. On my 2011 Samsung HDTV it... is very dark indeed. But yeah, will get S-Video cables now!

3 generations of Nintendo consoles used the same port for the AV cables, so you maybe could have gotten the GameCube component cables and plugged them into an SNES (or an N64 for that matter!).

Anyway for my money the NES actually looks great on HDTV. Or at least NES Virtual Console games do, I haven't dug out my actual NES. SNES games, not as much. I always attributed it to SNES games (and Genesis games to a lesser extent) using their larger color palettes to introduce more shading to their graphics. Where the NES would just use a single shade of red for Mario's hat, for example, the SNES would use a bunch of shades and rely on the blurring effect of SDTV to blend them together smoothly. So when you look at them on an HDTV, the NES looks fine because it's all still that single shade, but the SNES looks like a pixel mess because all those different shades don't blend.

Nope, you actually can't. The Gamecube component cables use a Digital Out port that is separate from the A/V port. Nintendo also owns the patent on the design, which is why no 3rd-party GCN component cables exist which is why they all cost $80 now.

There might be some wacky 3rd-party peripheral that connects an SNES to a TV through component, but it wasn't set up to support it so any enhancements made that way would be minimal. Kinda like those 3rd-party Wii HDMI converters.

Even if it still looks better to you on the Trinitron, you can at least use the S-Video cables on the Trintron itself to enhance it THERE. I'm sure any 2007 model would support S-Video.
