B8's favorite 2D Zelda and one of the most popular Zelda ever.
Similar to what SMB3 did, Link to the Past took the formula of the first game, and added a better story, more powerups, longer and deeper dungeons, and heart containers.
The Dark World is also a very well-liked feature in this game.
While not the first game in the series, it's definitely the first many have played and cared about.
Metal Gear Solid mixes good stealth gameplay with an engaging story, making the whole experience very memorable to players.
Solid Snake is one of the most-liked protagonists, and you haven't played this game yet you have to in order to see why.
13.Persona 3/FES/Portable
Points Received/List Appearances: 145;13 Developer: Atlus System: PlayStation 2,PlayStation 3, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation Network Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 13th (List 8)
The first Megami Tensei game to go mainstream and gain quite a fandom.
Persona 3 mixes dungeon crawling with a decently challenging battle system, a good story, good memorable characters, and Social Links which you can use to help people with their problems and you can even date girls if you wish.
Just make sure not to date two at a time.
12.Super Mario 64
Points Received/List Appearances: 154;12 Developer: Nintendo EAD System: Nintendo 64, Virtual Console, Nintendo DS Genre(s): 3D Platformer Previous Rank: 21st (List 8)
While not the first 3D platformer, it is definitely one of the most popular and most influential. It is also the highest Mario game on this list.
The transition of the Mario series from 2D to 3D was very received due to how well Mario controls in the game, all the nice powerups, and the 3D platforming is just plain FUN.
Melee vs. Brawl topics happen often on the board, but on these lists Melee always reigns supreme.
While Smash Bros. 64 was a fun game, Melee took the concept of 64 and literally went all-out.
There are now 25 characters (although some are clones) as opposed to 12, there are way more levels, there are a much wider of variety of single and multiplayer modes, and the gameplay is still the overall fastest in the series.

I sold my sig for gas money. SuperNiceDog just kicked my ass.
Oh wow am I glad to see Final Fantasy IX doing this well, seeing as it stands head-and-shoulders above nearly every other single player game that I have played.
If only it could get above FFVII, that would be the day.
I was pretty sure Skyward Sword had got at least 30 points

-- We are living our lives Abound with so much information
The highest Strategy RPG and many people's favorite Final Fantasy.
The game has your typical final fantasy job system but has its own unique way of leveling up characters and abilities. While the game is easy enough to learn, the overall difficulty can be a bit tough.
The storyline is pretty liked except that the translation can be a bit infamous.
9.The Legend of Zelda: Majoras Mask
Points Received/List Appearances: 171;12 Developer: Nintendo EAD System: Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Virtual Console Genre(s): Action-Adventure Previous Rank: 24th (List 8)
GameFAQs Game of the 00s Decade and surprisingly, Board 8's overall favorite Zelda game.
Majora's Mask is quite different compared to most Zelda games in the series. While there are still dungeons and items to find and stuff, there are many things unique to this game such as: The 3 day system, finding ALL masks, more and deeper sidequests than all Zelda games, and a mere 4 main dungeons.
After FF6-8's more futurisitc setting, FF9 goes back to the classic medieval setting.
Compared to FF7-8, 4 characters can fight in a battle, each character has a play style that's more similar to the classic job system, and the story is more light hearted than the previous two main games in the series.
While these changes aren't liked by some, many people who play this game love these changes and some consider it the best Final Fantasy.
The gameplay has the common ATB system but instead of a typical job class being in, this game revolves around learning magic through equipping summon spirits.
This game has the highest amount of playable characters in a main FF game totaling 14. It also has one of the most popular game villains in Kefka.
The highest Final Fantasy this time around although it was quite close.
After 6 consecutive games with the ATB system, FF10 goes back to a more clasical turn-based system but its unique in that you can see whose turns are coming up and you can switch any of your party members in at any time.
Leveling up is also unique, in that you go through a Sphere Grid to gain stats instead of the typical stat gains everytime you grow a "level".
Quite easily the most popular Metal Gear Solid this time around.
While the well-loved stealth gameplay is still in there a lot has changed the 2nd game.
You now play as Big Boss/Naked Snake, not Solid Snake in the first entry in the series chronologically. The majority of the game takes place in a jungle, so while the levels aren't as 'tight', you have no radar and you have to make sure you keep your stamina up along with your health.
Points Received/List Appearances: 288;22 Developer: Capcom Production Studio 4 System: Nintendo GameCube, PlayStation 2, PC, Wii, Mobile phone, iPhone, iPad, PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 Genre(s): Third-person shooter, survival horror Previous Rank: 9th (List 8)
For quite a while this game was actually #1 and fought for it for a while before finally settling for #3.
The highest non-JRPG on this list, Resident Evil 4 is one of the few games on board 8 that gets lots of love with very very little hate.
Resident Evil 4 is a bit of a departure from the previous games to make the game more palletable for people usually not into typical survival horrors.
Although the "survival horror" part is still there, an over-the-shoulder third person perspective has been added which is one of the most praised aspects of the game and carried onto into future installments. Each game has a laser pointer and shooting enemies at specific parts of the body affects their reaction and how much faster they die. Speaking of enemies, there are no more 'zombies' but instead Ganados that can actually permanently die.
While the main character Leon Kennedy isn't a new character into the series, he is much more mature than from RE2 and his snarky comments make a very well-liked protagonist.
2.Persona 4
Points Received/List Appearances: 340;21 Developer: Atlus System: Playstation 2, Vita (coming soon) Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 2nd (List 8)
A former winner on these lists and came really close to doing it again.
Persona 4 takes the popular concept and elements of Persona 3 and changes/adds many things.
The battle system allows you to control all party members (not just the main character), dungeons have less floors than Tartarus and aren't as predetermined, and dating multiple girls does not hamper your relationships with any of them.
The overall tone is a bit more light-hearted than Persona 3 overall but there are still a bunch of serious and emotional moments.
Persona 4 has gotten so popular that it's gotten a pretty good anime adaption, a Vita port, and in a few months a FIGHTING GAME.
1.Chrono Trigger
Points Received/List Appearances: 368;26 Developer: Squaresoft System: Super Nintendo, PlayStation, Nintendo DS, Virtual Console, PlayStation Network, iOS Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 8th (List 8)
I'll be honest, I'm surprised this game has never once gotten #1 on these lists. It has more universal love (on board 8) and less hate than FF7.
What's interesting about Chrono Trigger in that besides its time travel plot, it really isn't overall too unique compared to other JRPGs. However people agree that in that pretty much everything it does, it does quite well with very little flaws.
The characters are all pretty likable, the soundtrack is popular, there are no random battles, each character has their own special moveset, there a lot of small events you change early on in the game, there are multiple endings, and a bunch of cool plot twists.
If for some reason you are on board 8, like JRPGs and haven't played this game yet many people (and this list) should and will convince you to play at least once in your lifetime.
P4 too low, but I think it now has one 1st place finish and two 2nd place finishes which is great. CT pretty decent game, but every JRPG in the top 20 that I've played aside from 1 is better than it.

RPGs are huge, though, and have been pretty much as long as gaming's been around. It's also a massive catch-all term, and "RPG" really covers about 5 or 6 wildly different genres. Taking gaming as a whole, I'd say the RPG is probably the single biggest genre, in terms of number of major releases.

Pretty good. Glad Xenogears placed as high and FFVII/FFT are my follow-up games so seeing them do so well is nice. Don't really care that VII did worse than usual; as time goes on more people might begin to ranking it lower overall. (Just not me, apparently!)
