55.Xenogears Points Received/List Appearances: 67; 5 Developer: Squaresoft Product Development Division 3 System(s): PS1, Playstation Network Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 75th (List 8) An older Squaresoft RPG that was once very rare and expensive but is now very accessible on the Playstation Network for a great $9.99. The game is very loved for its characters, gameplay, music and especially its complex yet interesting story. While Disc 2 is wildly infamous to some, most fans will say that going through the whole thing is very much worth it. 54.Tales of Graces f Points Received/List Appearances: 68; 6 Developer: Namco Tales Studio System(s): Playstation 3 Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: N/A The most recent entry in the big Tales series... literally released last month as of this writeup. While a lot of typical Tales tropes are still there, there are a bunch of differences from games like Symphonia or Vesperia. For one, there is the CC system which replaces TP, in which you technically can't run out of using artes. The battles are still in 3D and there's free run but you run 'foward' to in an emeny instead of to the left. This has the fastest Tales battle system as of now. 53.Super Mario Galaxy 2 Points Received/List Appearances: 69; 10 Developer: Nintendo EAD Tokyo System(s): Wii Genre(s): 3D Platformer Previous Rank: 36th (List 8) The original Super Mario Galaxy was so popular that it convinved Miyamoto to create the first direct sequel to a 3D Mario game. Super Mario Galaxy 2 has a lot of the same mechanics as the original but a bunch of elements are different. There are more powerups, Luigi takes less effort to unlock, Player 2 as more options, choosing levels through a map similar to Super Mario World, and considered to be the best change for some: the addition of YOSHI. 52.Portal 2 Points Received/List Appearances: 70; 7 Developer: Valve Corporation System(s): PC, Mac, PS3, Xbox 360 Genre(s): Puzzle-platformer Previous Rank: N/A Portal 2 was already considered the best puzzle game by many, so when Valve did the impossible and made Portal 2 EVEN BETTER blew fans away. Portal 2 has the same mechanics as Portal 1, making two portals that connect to each other in order to solve puzzles. However Portal 2 adds many great gameplay elements such as: goo, funnier moments, new characters, and even a separate co-op mode which has separate puzzles from the single player mode (you can even connect to other people online to play!) 51.Team Fortress 2 Points Received/List Appearances: 70; 9 Developer: Valve Corporation System(s): PC, 360, PS3, MAC Genre(s): Multiplayer-only FPS Previous Rank: 77th (List 3) Another Valve sequel game, guess second time's always the charm for them, eh. An FPS game that revolves around its multiplayer aspect, and for a while was one of the bigger online communities on Board 8. Unlike other multiplayer FPSs there are "classes" in this game: Pyro, Engineer, Spy, Heavy, Sniper, Scout, Soldier, Demoman, Medic. Each class gets its own set of weapons and skills and you can choose a new class everytime you respawn. -- http://www.backloggery.com/superangelo128 http://myanimelist.net/profile/superangelo128 http://vndb.org/u6633/votes http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7524301 ... 50.Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald
Points Received/List Appearances: 72;5 Developer: Game Freak System: GBA Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: N/A The 3rd Generation of the mainline Pokemon games. This generation usually gets a lot of mixed reception but apparently all the big fans voted this year. Pokemon R/S/E has the same concept of the original two generations: catch Pokemon, get 8 badges, beat the Elite 4 and do other random side quests. Not only were new Pokemon added, but there a new Ability system was added to make each Pokemon even more unique. 49.Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Points Received/List Appearances: 74; 8 Developer: Intelligent Systems System: Gamecube Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 76th (List 7) The sequel to the N64 Paper Mario, and considered by many the better game. There are action commands, paper graphics and all that jazz but a bunch of new features were added such as new Paper Abilities, all new partners, an extra method of reducing damage from enemies, and another main villain that isnt Bowser. 48.Suikoden V Points Received/List Appearances: 75;5 Developer: Konami, Hudson Soft System: Playstation 2 Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 48th (List 8) One of the few games to actually have the exact same ranking as last year despite the removal of Phase 2 and 3. Suikoden 5, despite being the 5th game in the series, is actually the first game in the series chronologically. After some complaints abuot III and IV, V is closer to the style of I and II and bigger than ever. The combat is back to a 6 units max a fight that you can control individually and there are now more abilites for each character that can fight in battle. As always, the main goal/charm of Suikoden games is to get all 108 Stars of Destiny, in order to get the best ending. -- http://www.backloggery.com/superangelo128 http://myanimelist.net/profile/superangelo128 http://vndb.org/u6633/votes http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7524301 ... 47.Earthbound
Points Received/List Appearances: 75; 6 Developer: Nintendo, APE, HAL Laboratory System: Super Nintendo Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 60th (List 8) Earthbound is one of Nintendos few popular RPG series. While Earthbound has a typical turn-based system and a bunch of JRPG elements, Earthbound has a lot of unique things about it. A bunch of the enemies have crazy designs, the main character fights with a baseball bat, the plot/maps have a bunch of weird but entertaining stuff among other things. 46.Fire Emblem (7): The Blazing Blade/Blazing Sword Points Received/List Appearances: 80;8 Developer: Intelligent Systems System: Game Boy Advance Genre(s): Strategy RPG Previous Rank: 44th (List 8) The first Fire Emblem to be released in America, and no Marths not in this game. Fire Emblem is a bit unique in that there are 3 storyliens you can chose from at the beginning of the game. Lyns which is basically a tutorial for beginners, Eliwood which is the main quest, and Hector which is the main quest but from Hectors persepective with a few more missions and a little bit harder. Other than that, it is the same other Fire Emblem games, being a decently challenging strategy game where the main charm is that when an character you control dies, they die FOREVER. -- http://www.backloggery.com/superangelo128 http://myanimelist.net/profile/superangelo128 http://vndb.org/u6633/votes http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7524301 ... 45.Kingdom Hearts
Points Received/List Appearances: 82;7 Developer: Squaresoft System: Playstation 2 Genre(s): Action RPG Previous Rank: 69th (List 8) The board keeps switching whether they like the 1st or 2nd game more, this time they prefer the 1st. The game that started it all... the crossover of Disney Worlds with Square characters along with the main original characters. The gameplay that was sort of an Action RPG verison of a Final Fantasy battle system. 44.Tales of the Abyss Points Received/List Appearances: 83;8 Developer: Namco Tales Studio System: Playstation 2, 3DS Genre(s): Action JRPG Previous Rank: 32nd (List 8) The first game to implement Free Run and its been used often since then. The game is well-liked for its story, characters, battle system, and lots of side quests and secrets. A somewhat easier to find 3DS just recently came out so if you've always wanted to play it, now's your chance. 43.Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots Points Received/List Appearances: 85;7 Developer: Kojima Productions System: Playstation 3 Genre(s): Stealth action, third-person shooter Previous Rank: 22nd (List 8) The final chapter in Solid Snake's story. Solid Snake is now OLD SNAKE and this game's story for him show's how harder it is to continue all the stuff he does at his physical age. The gameplay has gotten a bit of an overhaul, with you being able to buy weapons at almost any time and the game being a bit more action-oriented with stealth still being an option. 42.Pokemon Black/White Points Received/List Appearances: 85;10 Developer: Game Freak System: Nintendo DS Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: N/A The most recent entry in the mainline Pokemon series. Interestingly, unlike other previous generations there aren't any major changes to the battle mechanics. Instead, the game polishes up a lot of previous elements of Pokemon games to make them even better. Various changes include: Being ONLY able to catch the newest generation of Pokemon until after the Elite 4, making TMs infinite, making the story a bit deeper, etc. 41.Shadow of the Colossus Points Received/List Appearances: 87;8 Developer: Team Ico System: PlayStation 2, PlayStation 3 Genre(s): Action-adventure Previous Rank: 67th (List 8) Shadow of the Colossus is a bit unique among Action-adventure games. The majority of the gameplay revolves around fighting massive colossi and riding around to said colossi. This might not sound too great on paper but the overall experience is unlike any you've played before, and beating the colossi can be a bit challenging. -- http://www.backloggery.com/superangelo128 http://myanimelist.net/profile/superangelo128 http://vndb.org/u6633/votes http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7524301 ... 40.Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Points Received/List Appearances: 87;10 Developer: Ad hoc development team System: Wii Genre(s): Fighting Previous Rank: 17th (List 8) Although there a few people who are disappointed with or downright hate Brawl, many people are very satisfied with the most recent game in the series. The Smash Bros. series is well-loved for mixing Nintendo characters with frantic gameplay and a unique fighting system. Brawl is not only the biggest game in the series thus far, it is the first to have a full-fledged single player adventure mode and the first to have non-Nintendo characters in Snake and Sonic. 39.Okami Points Received/List Appearances: 90;8 Developer: Clover Studio System: PlayStation 2, Wii Genre(s): Action-adventure Previous Rank: 42nd (List 8) Okami is one of the most popular "Zelda-clones" ever. It is comparable to Zelda games in that there are dungeons you go in, solve puzzles, and beat up enemies. However the one gameplay mechanic that separates Okami as using the Celestial Brush to finish off your enemies and solve certain puzzles. 38.Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Points Received/List Appearances: 91;8 Developer: Capcom System: Nintendo DS, WiiWare, iOS Genre(s): Adventure/Visual novel Previous Rank: 40th (List 8) One of the few board 8 "fad games" that still goes strong, garnering lots of discussion when brought up, the main character being the #1 fictional character and being the board's mascot character. Phoenix Wright makes being a lawyer seem so DAMN COOL. You investigate crime scenes and have epic courtroom battles yelling OBJECTION at opposing prosecutors. The gameplay is simple but can be quite challenging at times since you have to make the right choices and present the correct evidence in order to advance the story. 37.Super Metroid Points Received/List Appearances: 95;9 Developer: Nintendo R&D1, Intelligent Systems System: SNES, Virtual Console Genre(s): 2D platformer/action-adventure Previous Rank: 37th (List 8) Many people's favorite Metroid game, and started a standard for open-ended platformers. Metroid games are all about getting the various powerups, beating the crap out of random creatures, exploring and for some people finding the fastest way to beat the game with every item collected. 36.Mother 3 Points Received/List Appearances: 98;7 Developer: Nintendo, Brownie Brown, HAL Laboratory System: Game Boy Advance Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 59th (List 8) The highest game to not get an official release (whyyy Nintendo???). Thankfully a fan translation has allowed many people to play and love this game. Mother 3 has many similarities to Earthbound such as its battle system, quirky characters and moments, and even graphical style. The game is noted for its pretty emotional story, especially for a Nintendo game. -- http://www.backloggery.com/superangelo128 http://myanimelist.net/profile/superangelo128 http://vndb.org/u6633/votes http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7524301 ... 35.Disgaea: Hour/Afternoon of Darkness/DS
Points Received/List Appearances: 96;7 Developer: Nippon Ichi Software System: PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS Genre(s): Strategy RPG Previous Rank: 34th (List 8) A more niche startegy RPG but very well-loved by those who play it. The story is pretty light-hearted and funny, but what really stands out about the game is how over the top the gameplay is compared to other SRPGs. The level cap is ridiculously high, and there are lots of side bosses at really high levels so grinding a lot in this game is a must. People who love this game tend to be lots of hours into it. 34.Skies of Arcadia (Legends) Points Received/List Appearances: 99;7 Developer: Overworks System: Dreamcast, Gamecube Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 57th (List 8) An RPG whose fans on board 8 really really love the game. Although a bunch of the game seems JRPG fare there are a bunch of things about it that stick out about it. The setting takes place in the SKY, so expect to be an airship already towards the beginning of the game. Along with your turn-based battle system are airship battles which take about as much strategy as the main battles. 33.Fallout 3 Points Received/List Appearances: 101;8 Developer: Bethesda Game Studios System: PC, Playstation 3, Xbox 360 Genre(s): Western Action RPG Previous Rank: 39th (List 8) One of the most popular open world games of this generation. There are many quests and many areas to explore so you definitely won't get bored quickly, even in a 2nd playthrough. The perks and VATS system are unique gameplay mechanics that people enjoy. 32.Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trials and Tribulations Points Received/List Appearances: 101;11 Developer: Capcom System: Nintendo DS Genre(s): Adventure/visual novel Previous Rank: 23rd (List 8) Board 8's favorite Ace Attorney game, albeit barely so. The game stars Phoenix Wright as usual saving his clients through the use of banging desks and yelling, and simple yet complex gameplay. However, this game has a few 'flashback' cases with Phoenix's mentor, Mia and these cases tie in with the overall main plot. 31.Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty/Substance Points Received/List Appearances: 106;8 Developer: KCEJ System: Playstation 2, Xbox, PC, PS3, 360, Vita Genre(s): Stealth action Previous Rank: 45th (List 8) Although some people aren't fond of playing Raiden for most of the game, there are still many fans who adore this game and even call it the best in the series. MGS2 takes a lot of the gameplay elements that worked well in MGS1, fixed some things and added a few cool things of its own. There is now a first person mode which can be helpful for certain situations. You can now actually press yourself against a wall to hide from enemies as well. -- http://www.backloggery.com/superangelo128 http://myanimelist.net/profile/superangelo128 http://vndb.org/u6633/votes http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7524301 ... 30.Tales of Symphonia
Points Received/List Appearances: 107;9 Developer: Namco Tales Studio System: Gamcube Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 10th (List 8) Many B8ers first Tales game and was the fad game on the board for a while. The plot is a bit cliche but many people enjoy it enough and a few of the characters are well-loved. The battle system is very action-based which is the biggest charm for many. 29.Castlevania: Symphony of the Night Points Received/List Appearances: 108;12 Developer: KCET/KCEN System: PS1, Sega Saturn, PSP, Xbox Live Arcade Genre(s): Action RPG Platformer Previous Rank: 35th (List 8) Easily The most popular Metroid-styled game that isn't Metroid and to many the best Castlevania. With amazing quotes like WHAT IS A MAN and decently open-ended gameplay, Symphony of the Night is a great classic that anyone that likes Metroid games should try out. 28.Tales of Vesperia Points Received/List Appearances: 111;9 Developer: Namco Tales Studio System: Xbox 360 Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 25th (List 8) The highest Tales game this time around, albeit barely. Vesperia adds a lot of well-liked tweaks such as a shared overlimit system, Burst Artes, and voiced skits for the first time. The main character, Yuri Lowell is a character beloved by almost every person who plays the game due to being much more mature and experienced than most RPG protagonists. 27.Pokemon Gold/Silver/Crystal/HeartGold/SoulSilver Points Received/List Appearances: 112;12 Developer: Game Freak System: Game Boy Color, Nintendo DS Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 19th (List 8) The second series of Pokemon main-line games. It takes all the fun elements of the original 3 versions and adds a lot of elements that have stayed since then. Some of these include a Special Defense stat, Dark/Steel types, new moves, and edits to older moves. The remakes HeartGold and SoulSilver are basically the same game except with a graphic overhaul and all the gameplay elements added in the 3rd and 4th generation. 26.The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time Points Received/List Appearances: 114;11 Developer: Nintendo EAD System: Nintendo 64, Nintendo GameCube, Virtual Console, Nintendo 3DS Genre(s): Action-Adventure Previous Rank: 3rd (List 8) Usually a top 5-10 game on these lists... doesn't even get into the top 25! That being said, this is still one of the most popular Zelda games ever and many people's top favorite. Ocarina of Time is the first 3D game in the series, and has all the elements of a typical Zelda game: beat dungeons, find items, and eventually beat Ganon. The change to the Nintendo 64 brought the ability to have better graphics, 3D puzzles, among other things. -- http://www.backloggery.com/superangelo128 http://myanimelist.net/profile/superangelo128 http://vndb.org/u6633/votes http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7524301 ... 25.Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow/FireRed/LeafGreen
Points Received/List Appearances: 114;13 Developer: Game Freak System: Game Boy, Game Boy Advance Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 14th (LIst 8) The Pokemon game that started it all. With its portable accessibility, slogan of GOTTA CATCH EM ALL, the ability to trade and battle other players, and a lot of charming monsters, Pokemon Gen 1 has helped make Pokemon one of Nintendo's most successful franchises. The FireRed and LeafGreen add mechanics that were made in Gens 2 and 3. 24.Suikoden II Points Received/List Appearances: 116;8 Developer: Konami System: Playstation 1 Genre(s): JRPG Previous Rank: 38th (List 8) Easily the most popular Suikoden game out there, and now one of the rarest and most expensive games ever. Add it to the Playstation Network already! Building off of Suikoden 1, Suikoden II is sort of a direct sequel taking place in the same world and even featuring a lot of the old characters that are once again part of the 108 Stars of Destiny. Suikoden II added a system that allows 3 runes per character, and improves the 3 types of battle systems. (Regular, Duel, and Massive). 23.Mass Effect 2 Points Received/List Appearances: 118;8 Developer: BioWare System: PC, Xbox 360, Playstation 3 Genre(s): Western RPG Previous Rank: 20th (List 8) The second game in this very loved Western RPG series. The series was so loved that this game was put on the PS3 when it was originally Microsoft consoles only. Mass Effect 2 is loved for many things: it's improvement (to some) on the already unique and fun gameplay, all the new and old characters, being able to do a paragon/renegade playthrough (and continue on from Mass Effect 1), all the dialogue choices in general, and the great plot. 22.Super Mario Bros. 3 Points Received/List Appearances: 119;11 Developer: Nintendo EAD System: NES, SNES, Game Boy Advance, Virtual Console Genre(s): 2D Platformer Previous Rank: 30th (List 8) One of the highest selling Nintendo games that wasn't packaged with a system and many people's favorite NES game. Unlike Super Mario Bros. 2 USA which had very different gameplay from the original, SMB3 actually takes the gameplay from SMB1 and expands on it A LOT. You have a little a bit of freedom to choose levels to play on the WORLD MAP, you have a bunch of fan-favorite power up suchs as the tanooki suit and the frog suit, and the levels are bigger and more varied. 21.Metroid Prime Points Received/List Appearances: 122;13 Developer: Retro Studios, Nintendo System: Gamecube, Wii Genre(s): First Person Shooter/Adventure Previous Rank: 28th (List 8) The highest Metroid game this time around. Before the game was released fans were worried about the change of Metroid become first person and that it would affect the fun factor. That turned out to be the complete opposite, as Metroid Prime is one of the most well-liked Metroid games in the series and has made Retro Studios a very well-liked developer. Prime is able to keep all the loved Metroid elements in there... exploring areas, finding powerups, battles with enemies and bosses and make it all 3D. -- http://www.backloggery.com/superangelo128 http://myanimelist.net/profile/superangelo128 http://vndb.org/u6633/votes http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7524301 ... Not surprised to see Gen 1 so high even though Gen 5 is far better.

20.Super Mario World
Points Received/List Appearances: 124;13 Developer: Nintendo EAD System: SNES, GBA, Virtual Console Genre(s): 2D Platformer Previous Rank: 33rd (List 8) The highest 2D Mario game. Super Mario World expands upon SMB3 by adding more colorful graphics (thanks to the SNES), a bunch of open-ended levels, Switches, and many people's favorite pet Yoshi. 19.Valkyria Chronicles Points Received/List Appearances: 125;9 Developer: Sega WOW System: Playstation 3 Genre(s): Strategy RPG Previous Rank: 16th (List 8) One of the most beloved Strategy RPGs this generation. Valkyria Chronicles is a bit unique among strategy rpgs in that while it is turn-based, when you control a unit you're basically playing a mini-third person shooter until you can't do any more actions that turn. There is a pretty good story and each character is already preset with a name and class. 18.Uncharted 2: Among Theives Points Received/List Appearances: 125;15 Developer: Naughty Dog System: Playstation 3 Genre(s): Action-adventure/3D platfomer Previous Rank: 54th (List 8) The 2nd game of one of the most well-liked new IPs this generation. The gameplay has been compared to Tomb Raider with a cover system. Drake climbs walls, makes crazy jumps, solves puzzles for most of the gameplay. You shoot enemies through a third-person view and can use a cover system. The multiplayer is well-liked too, and before 3 came out it was quite popular among b8ers to play online together. 17.The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker Points Received/List Appearances: 131;10 Developer: Nintendo EAD System: Gamecube Genre(s): Action-Adventure Previous Rank: 41st (List 8) Wind Waker generally does well on these lists but this is easily the best its done thus far. While people dislike this game for its art style and sailing, many people enjoy this game for these exact reasons. The overall gameplay is still the same as other Zeldas: you go to dungeons, find items and eventually beat Ganon. Since the majority of the world has water you have to SAIL to each island (and dungeon). 16.Half-Life 2 Points Received/List Appearances: 131;12 Developer: Valve Corporation System: PC, Xbox, Xbox 360, Playstation 3, MAC Genre(s): FPS Previous Rank: 26th (List 8) Easily board 8's favorite FPS and one of the few that barely gets any hate. Half-Life 2 is unique about FPS for its story not being told through cutscenes, its gravity/physics based puzzles and platforming and everyone's favorite GRAVITY GUN. -- http://www.backloggery.com/superangelo128 http://myanimelist.net/profile/superangelo128 http://vndb.org/u6633/votes http://www.goodreads.com/user/show/7524301 ...
