This honor is one that I will hold dearly for the rest of my life.

If I was creative enough, I'd find a way to make this into a meme where people are doing mundane things and then all of a sudden this song starts blaring and pirates come and **** their **** up.

Sounds like something out of an episode of Scrubs.

9) He Lives In You
From: The Lion King 2: Simba's Pride
Nominated by: MycroProcessor

This will probably be the oddest choice in my top ten, and I don't really give a crap! This song is way, way underrated in my opinion and it actually outshines the opening to its predecessor in many regards. TLK: Simba's Pride has a pretty iffy soundtrack to be quite honest. For every We Are One, or One of Us, there is a Love Will Find a Way or heaven forbid Upendi to drag the whole thing down. But this song surpasses anything else in the movie and strives for greatness on its own. It just... wow.

It has pretty much always been in my top 30, but when I saw it on Broadway about five years ago I think... man, was it amazing! Instant twenty-spot boon. Here's a clip of The Lion King on Broadway version, They Live in You.

Well... it doesn't quite capture the magic of what I experienced that evening, but then again I doubt if anything would. TLK on Broadway is really the sort of thing you have to experience for yourself.

Oh yeah, the show closed on it right? Lol, it's been too long. Clearly I need to see TLK on Broadway again, and to anyone who hasn't- YOU should see it TOO!

Simba's Pride is okay. Good as far as Disney sequels go (not exactly a compliment). The soundtrack is my favorite thing about it, and like I said before that's a pretty mixed bag. You want to see a real abomination, go check out The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, or The Hunchback of Notre Dame 2: This Movie was so Dumb I Can't Even Remember the Subtitle for It. Actually no. Don't go check out HoND 2. I wouldn't force that on my greatest enemy. You might get a few chuckles out of Return to the Sea though, if only for how bad it is.

You know what sequel was actually really really fantastic though? The prequel-sequel The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning. Very worthy of adding to the storyline unlike that crapfest featuring Ariel's daughter, Chinese mermaid outta nowhere, a penguin, and an antagonist literally referred to as "Ursula's crazy sister". No really, you can't make this stuff up. The villain pops up out of the sea and Sebastian I think is like "Oh no, it's Ursula's crazy sister!"

Really? Was Ursula herself not crazy enough? Why was the sister never worth mentioning up until that point? Disney are you even trying!?!

Spoiler alert: The answer to that last one was no.

8) This is Halloween
From: The Nightmare Before Christmas
Nominated by: Justin_Crossing

What I love most about this song is the two conflicting moods: the mood of the atmosphere is dark and mysterious, but the mood of the song is light and hoppin'. I just find that hilarious. Bum. Bum. Bum. Ba-dah-dum. Bum. Bum. Ba-DAH-dum. Bum. Bum. Ba-dah-dum, ba-DAH-dum. Buuum. It's the kind of beat you bop to- just a bit jazzy and quite a bit fun. The whole town is in on this, so there's a huge variety of singers and not just one person imitating a lot of voices à la Robin Williams in FLM or the Marilyn Manson version of this very song (which sucks by the way). Some of them harmonize quite well, others don't, but it's all good.

My favorite part of the song is actually the part at the very end- As the grown townsfolk go "LALALALALALALALA HALLOWEEN, HALLOWEEN. LALALALALALALALA HALLOWEEN, HALLOWEEN" and the young townsfolk go "La, la, la, LALA. La, la, la, LALA" and everyone ends with "wheee!" it just all comes together so harmoniously. My favorite stretch of the song is the one in which the werewolf goes, "Aren't you scared?" to which the witches reply "Well, THAT'S JUST FINE!" "Say it once, say it twice. Take a chance and roll the dice. Ride with the moon in the dead of night!" And then the tree enters in. In fact I just love how each scene bleeds right into the next in nifty little transitions like the tree opening its maw or the moon's light revealing the Oogie Boogie Man... It's just nice. Also that clown with the tear-away face used to scare the piss out of me.

7) Prince Ali
From: Aladdin
Nominated by: Anagram

Hey look there's a buzz on this ranking list.
There's a lack of another song quite like this.
And if you know the words you'll wanna sing along.
Get ready, 'cause it's here, wipe your eyes, clean your ears...
Are you gonna love this song!~

Prince Ali! Fabulous song from a fabulous movie. It's actually really hard to pick a favorite portion of it between Genie pulling a rug out from under some guards to force them into a kneel (this song taught me the word "genuflect" which is p neat), Iago dancing along until Jafar catches him and gives him the stink eye/death glare, Genie rallying the gathering townies by transforming into different people/creatures and saying different things too interest them., or the stiff, serious guards chanting, "He's got the monkeys! Let's see the monkeys!!" while dancing some crazy straight-legged jig.

If hard pressed, I'd have to go with that last one. Something about grown men wanting to see white Persian monkeys that badly- I can only assume they must be really cute. Speaking of really cute monkeys, I would like about ten of these- one for each external image
external image
My bday's coming up in June. Make it happen B8.

Back to the song.... It's got this really simple 1-2-1-2 beat to it almost the entire length of the song, but it slows down to a near-hault and then speeds up again right at the end accentuating Ali and Abu bursting through the palace door like total bosses (lol Jafar) and then the last tastefully high note is drawn out- always loved the usage of the drawn out final note done in many a Disney song, but here it's... dare I say magical? You might wonder why, when they have the same gimmick, there's such a difference in between Friend Like Me and this song, and the reason for that is I do not know what it is. /cop out

To be honest, I think there's less variation in RW's vocal performance in this song but I could very well be imagining it. Either way, this is superior.

Before I get into the writeup, let me say that this and the upcoming four songs (that is songs #6-2) are all so extremely close that they could swap places on my ranking at any time and not feel out of place- song #1 is the only one I feel strongly enough about to keep at a constant ranking. That said, the ranking I've decided on is how I feel about them at this exact moment, so they are official.

6) A Whole New World
From: Aladdin
Nominated by: DoctorBIind

Simply put, this song is beautiful. In fact, it's beautiful enough to be the only true romantic song that has never left my top 10 (not just in this list, but of all Disney songs period) at any time. That could be all I need to write about it, but I'm gonna type up some more.

If you take it at face value, "a whole new world" can just mean the vast expanses beyond the palace of Agrabah, which of course Jasmine has never been free to travel. You know... you'd think as a freakin' princess she would have the right to go wherever the hell she wants, but I guess Middle Eastern princesses (during whatever time frame this takes place in) had about as many "rights" as certain oppressed Middle Eastern women today- not many. Anyway, they're seeing these many breathtaking sights and hearing all sorts of melodious sounds that they- an impoverished street urchin and a sheltered princess have never seen or heard before and sharing these experiences together leads to something more...

It's just really sweet. Aladdin's voice isn't very strong on its own, but when the two of them sing together they harmonize extremely well because Jasmine has a sharp, clear and powerful voice- which is atypical of someone who sings in such a high key (I find women who sing in high keys to either have soft voices or powerful opera star soprano voices with there rarely ever being an in-between like Jasmine's)- that more than compensates for Aladdin's vocal shortcomings. That said, Jasmine isn't quite carrying the song by herself despite being the stronger voice. While both are nice on their own, when they're singing together is when the song's true potential is unlocked. My favorite part of the song is when they're alternating singing parts, or more accurately when one is singing about his or her experiences and the other is adding in or speaking to the first. It's just interesting how well they play off of each other.

Also interesting is that they travel over Egypt, Greece, and China. That statuette they pass in Greece looks like the cherub that Megara turns away from her in I Won't Say I'm in Love. And that thing going on in China looks a lot like an Imperial festival like they were having near the end of Mulan. I wonder if later animators had these things in mind when they did their respective movies.
