Why do you hate Gaston so much?

He was something different from other Disney villains, he was the closest they could make to a hero being the antagonist, and you hate him so much and your only explanation is "gross chest hair."

Yeah... Of every single not-quite-Disney Honorable Mention, this song is far and away my favorite. I like it twice as much as Once Upon a December at least which is why it really kills me that I couldn't find a quality recording of it in its original context. The first link is a low-quality recording of it in its original context. Both the sight and the sound are off on it. Second link is the scene in its original context, but it's the Italian dub, so you can at least see how pretty it would have been in English. Third link has high-quality audio, but is a stupid FMV composed of clips from the first and second movie. Dumb dumb, dumb... Anyway, this movie was balls. Absolutely terrible. I would not recommend it to anyone unless they absolutely adored the original Balto enough to explore the character again in the direct-to-video sequel. There are exactly two things that make this movie worthwhile, and one of them is this song here. So beautiful.

Gaston's "alright", but as most of you know I love all the villains. He's not quite as good as the rest of the Disney Renaissance villains (minus Tarzan) but still pretty cool nevertheless. I don't quite the connection to him as I do some of the other villains, but he serves his role pretty well. Like Brett said, he's a great foil for Beast.

Congratulations on finishing this. I must say that I haven't seen the movie since I was little, and Hellfire is fantastic. No wonder I never liked Hunchback of Notre Dame as a child, everything went way over my head.

Oh yeah, I guess I should mention what the prizes are.

They are pics. Specifically they are MS Paint mouse-drawn by yours truly of any animated Disney scene you'd like. Lady and the Tramp sharing the spaghetti dinner your favorite scene? See a half-assed MS Paint picture of it come to life and taste the magic! Be Our Guest more your cup of tea? Be my guest to have a cherished memory you can laugh at from behind your monitor forever! That goes to the top 3 finishers. Who I don't know yet. Because I'm too lazy to tally. Pretty sure Doc has one though. Also the higher you place, the longer I'll spend on it.

~*~Why Genny hates Gaston~*~

I recognize exactly what he is: a comical antithesis to the Beast (beautiful on the outside and ugly within). I realize that I'm not supposed to take him seriously, and yet I find that I do. As such, he sucks as a human being. He's a big bully jerk and he's not funny at all, so he fails even in the comical villain regard. Just not my brand of humor I guess. Also he's not even really a villain so much as he is a misguided antagonist. His motivations are originally "get the girl", which isn't a terrible motive in and of itself, but it becomes terrible when he outright abandons it later in the film and acts out of character and becomes violent for whatever reasons- I'm guessing he's just a buffoon.

So, finally realizing that the girl of his dreams can't stand to breathe the same air as him, he ceases his exercise in futility and locks her and her father away in the town wine cellar or whatever and then seeks to kill the Beast because.... why? Fear is maybe the most logical explanation. He fears what he does not understand and seeks to kill it. However, that Beast didn't just "poof" into the castle one day out of the blue... it had to have been there for years without bothering to come after the townsfolk and their children so logic would say it's not interested. The worst part is that he, an idiot, refused to listen to reason. He stands nothing to gain by this act, as killing the Beast she's grown fond of is certainly not going to win him the heart of his intended bride. The whole "If I can't have her no one can!" could fit, but that's a stupid motive. So yeah, the only thing that would fit here is fear, but he would no there was nothing to fear if he would just stop being stupid and listen for one minute. No one deserves to fall to their death like Gaston!

So, to conclude:

-Dumb
-Gross and way too hairy
-Hunts for sport, not for need
-Spoiled brat
-Treats his only real friend like crap
-Probable womanizer
-Refuses to take 'no' for an answer (relates back to being a spoiled brat)
-Supports gender oppression (women shouldn't be reading soon they'll start getting ideas and... thinking...)
-Loud and violent
-Bit of a coward, and he fights like one when outclassed too
-Unfunny

As for the song, even though Gaston has a lovely singing voice (the only lovely aspect of this character), the lyrics are stupid and the score makes it sound like a circus song. It certainly makes for a unique villain song, but not a particularly good one.

Well... I mean he is the film's villain. You are supposed to be able to think of plenty of negative qualities for his character. Some of these things relate to him as a character, the things that make him the villain of the story. He's a womanizer, he's boisterous, he's arrogant and egotistical, etc.

I mean... you could make a similar list for Frollo (the reasons why he's the villain) almost. I dunno. As the resident villain connoisseur of this board, I often dislike villains when they fail to make me hope against their deeds. Though my outright favorites are ones I can relate to, or feel sympathy for, ones I like perform their roles well. I mean here you explain why you hate Gaston, but as a viewer of BatB you are supposed to feel those things about him.

Gaston gets obsessed by the end. He's obviously jealous of The Beast, and just preys on people's fear and ignorance to get support from the townspeople to storm the castle. Plus, he has to stroke his ego by taking down a huge monster. He has that alpha male, "gotta prove I'm the best" mentality. But he can't accept that The Beast is straight up better than he is, and he goes off the deep end. It's great.

Yeah I get what you're saying. Sometimes it is hard to explain why you don't like a certain character beyond "I just don't". That's fair enough, I'm sure there are several characters in the world I'd have the same difficulty explaining.

To me, Gaston serves his role in the film well and his breaking of his "cool, macho, collected" character as he is driven to the point of insanity by his jealousy is my favorite part of his character. It is perhaps he is the most human of all the Disney villains. His evil traits are much more believable and commonplace than any of his counterparts (many are supernatural, and Frollo extremely warped to a level that isn't common at all). Gaston is basically an "alpha male ass", which is a pretty common thing so perhaps that has something to do with it.

But I still think he has his moments. I can't say he's as great as most Disney villains but all of them are pretty superb so its hard to compete there.

At least Frollo is consistent though. And nothing about him is comical in the non-sardonic sense, so I can't say his brand of humor goes completely over my head. The point is I just don't like Gaston as an antagonist and it's not solely because I don't like him as a person though that's true too. I mean, I wouldn't like Frollo if he were a real, living person either but I can appreciate him as a villain.

Why? Dunno. I like other comical villains like Hades or Jafar more than Gaston. Perhaps that's because they don't completely fail to entertain me. I laugh when Jafar quips with Iago. I chuckle when Hades puts Pain and Panic through... well... hell, or when he gets all hot and bothered when his plans fail. But when Gaston treats LeFou like a doormat I just... cringe. Meh.

Another note to self: Seriously, stop typing things at 2 am.

Great list, great fun. Now I can't wait to do my own. Though based on the last two I will be introduced to a lot of new songs. Can't wait for the snub list, I hope my late broadway nominations are on there.

Pride. Belle choose a Beast over him! A beast! Over the great Gaston?! Unacceptable! (I am obviously in character here) What makes this Beast so great that someone would dare to choose it over Gaston!

There are now basically two choices, he can choose to ignore it but there will always be that wounded pride and that bit of doubt in his previously unshakeable confidence. And what if the town found out and decided that Gaston was afraid of The Beast! No clearly the only choice is to confront and kill it. Thereby proving that Gaston is still the best!

But I fully understand why people don't like him and his song so whatever. This is just my opinion on the subject.
