yeah the actual writing is pretty good, I just don't like that it appears way slower than I read and in the case of repetitious text I can't even skip it. scrapper is great, if you told me there were to be robots in zelda I'd be a little skeptical but it worked very well

I really like that a few of the bosses had alternate ways of beating them

Did you find out that you can defeat the Imprisoned in seconds by simply jumping down on his head from the ledge above him and smacking down the sealing spike?

Wow that is awesome and will save me hours on a new playthrough.

Also, was anybody really surprised by grandma's "secret"?

I was also surprised that Impa was given the final goodbye scene over Fi. Fi might have been annoying as hell, but I gotta admit that her goodbye was surprisingly emotional (like, I didn't think I would give half a rat crap, but it was done well enough to make me care).

eh I liked Impa being the last part because of the credits being right after. Seeing Impa leaving Zelda and co, then credits come up and we see Zelda's adventure with Impa

MINI SPOILERS

The Tadtones quest marred what was an otherwise outstanding final stretch. The MGS-esque sneaking segment in Eldin wasn't that good, but at least it utilized some new gameplay.

Thunder Dragon Song Get - Awesome
Fire Dragon Song Get - Not bad
Water Dragon Song Get - Crap
Final Dungeon - Awesome
Final Bosses Stretch - Awesome
Ending - Awesome

Oh, there was also the final Silent Realm challenge, which was probably the best one because of the location.

I beat the game last night. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Right now I'd put it right after Majora's Mask and Wind Waker as my 3rd favorite Zelda game.

Btw, I thought the whole tadtone part was vastly overrated in how bad/frustrating it supposedly was. I didn't think it was bad at all, kinda fun.

I enjoyed the way they handled the master sword's creation story and the (spoilers?) connection between Zelda, Link, and Ganon. (End spoilers?)

Last boss battle was freaking sweet. Might be my favorite of the series. O.o

Uh... I guess that's my thoughts on it...

Beat it earlier today.

3 > 4 = 7 (If only for the almost surreal feeling collecting the dungeon "items") > 2 > 5 > 1 > 6

I'm not much of a sidequester on initial run throughs. I think I got 4 heart pieces and almost no cubes. My favorite thing about the game is the how deep into the lore they went and really added so much. Great dungeons, great bosses, great items that were always relevant. And after TP it was weird to die and get frustrated with difficulty. Tadtones are the worst thing ever. Great ending sequence, especially Akuma at the finale. Everything came together so well, although the one thing we've all wanted forever now somehow STILL didn't happen (come on Nintendo, throw us the bone already). I'd go much deeper into it all but I'm tired.

Just finished the game (APPARENTLY LATE) after about a week of putting in a good amount of hours each day. Various thoughts:

The handholding, dear god Fi, is there a time when there isn't more stuff to analyze? I'm happy you'll analyze my gear any time but I f***ing got it. I wouldn't mind as much on the handholding if it didn't go so far. Like, okay, shooting the timeshift orb on the ship's mast... okay, maybe that wouldn't have been immediately apparent. But when I get into Nayru's room in Sky Keep? The timeshift orb is literally the only thing in the room and this is the last dungeon. Why do I need to be told about this and have it pinpointed as being key to solving the room?

Along those same lines, the text. I do not need to go through 30 seconds of dialogue every time I fail at transporting pumpkins or every time I want to chop bamboo. And the text selection too-I admire the fact that they recognized the fact that motion controls could f*** up for selections of options and made sure to be careful with any meaningful decisions about saving or whatever to make sure you couldn't get f***ed by motion controls, but at the same time, that necessitated a lot more extra textboxes to deal with than is justifiable. Clear case of trying way too hard to make something work when there's no reason choosing between "Save" and "Save and Quit," etc. couldn't have been made easier, faster, and more fool proof by simply using the control stick.

The use of items with motion controls, however, was great. I wish rolling bombs didn't have to cause adjustment enough to cause me to avoid doing it if at all possible, but that's my only real complaint. I, unlike most, loved the beetle. Overall it was the best set of items in a Zelda that I've played (aka, all but TP, ST, and PH). Whip wasn't amazing but the upgraded Scattershot was fun, the Clawshot was amazing, the 3D Gust Jar was implemented pretty well too, and that was by far the best implementation of the Bow in the series, particularly if you got good at the C-draw. Really felt a lot more like an archer/knight than in any other Zelda title, absolutely mowing down those shield moblins with fully charged arrow after arrow and rapid sniping the archer goblins in Farore's room in Sky Keep was amazing.

Difficulty was weird. I loved it at the beginning; it was very challenging but fair. But they just... didn't scale it up. It was especially poor considering your ease of access to potions. The final boss and the first boss were the only ones I actually died on. I mean seriously, Ghirahim? I died on him my first two times and was definitely scrambling for hearts even when I beat him. But at Fire Sanctuary? Uh... I'm pretty sure his attacks did just as much as when he was the first boss. Never felt under pressure at all; it was a huge letdown. Also on the Ghirahim note, I'm still disappointed they didn't do some sort of fight with him after the gate of time cutscene; that sort that you're probably not supposed to win but definitely can if you're really good. Was a bit of a misstep there in my opinion; went just over my personal allowance for a game's villain to justify not attacking the hero and leaving because "oh I don't have time for you right now."

Tentalus. Just what the hell was that? I can ignore the lapse of logic in how the being suddenly comes to be with no foreshadowing and the sand turning completely into ocean and all. It was incredibly cool getting attacked and having the environment destroyed around me. Then I get on deck and I'm ready for a terrifyingly fierce kraken to come up and scream at me; I'm thinking Pirates of the Caribbean here. Then Mr. Monsters Inc. pops up... jesus christ, what a way to waste the atmosphere and fight and everything.

CONT. FROM PREVIOUS POST

Minor cutscenes. One, I don't need to see every single bit of smoke clear when I break a wall. Two, if you're going to insist on showing me the wall like that, time should not continue flowing in any way while the cutscene was going on. I had to slow down on bombing multiple objects multiple times as if I didn't, I'd end up stuck in a cutscene while a bomb blew up in my hands and damaged me. This also held true for the Imprisoned fight wherein if a cutscene like the spike popping up or him rearing up happened while I was freefalling from the sky, I would lose control but time would go on for Link. Thusly, I'd be forced to watch the Imprisoned do something while Link would just sort of be barely visible and freefall face first into the ground without even the ability to pop open a parachute. The cutscenes in this fashion were in general unnecessary. Showing us things how Fi often did was just a hand-holding waste of time, and the Mt. Eldin Prison Break was silly in this way. It was exactly like the Forbidden Fortress in Wind Waker, except it was showing you less necessary information that was easily figured out on your own, and was force feeding it to you as someone who was nearly finished with the god damn game.

Faron can go to hell, tadtones just ruined an otherwise fantastic last portion of that game for me. Right when I thought I was done with swimming and there were no more possible areas to swim.... NOPE, GOING TO TURN THE FOREST INTO A SWIMMING POOL FOR A GIANT COLLECTION QUEST, GLHF.

The Harp really feels like an after thought in terms of Zelda instruments. The lack functionality for the player outside of scripted cutscenes was pretty bad; not being able to actually play songs of your own free will was lame albeit merciful given how frustrating playing that thing was. Playing the Goddess' song at the Tower of Light made me want to destroy my Wiimote; I was there for a good 15 minutes until I figured out that I could make it work most of the time if I just sat right in front of the motion bar and kept the Wiimote no more than a foot away.

Skyward Sword Link is one of the biggest bad-asses of all time. His drive to save Zelda just made him unstoppable. What do most VG heroes do when the enemy summons a nearly endless horde of his minions to take you down? Say "oh noes!" and wait for a friend they made earlier to show up and say "HEY YOU GET FIGHTIN THAT THERE FINAL BOSS I'LL HOLD THESE GUYS OFF." This guy? Just rushes right in and slaughters every god damn thing he sees.

Demise? Ehhh. If we were going to deal with this form I would've appreciated it being a part of the foreshadowing from earlier, instead of just the imprisoned. I mean it was a cool, atmospheric fight and it was actually pretty tough, even if good at shield bashing. And actually getting to utilize the skyward strike like that was awesome. It really just felt like they were unsatisfied with you fighting his dragon for an end-boss and wanted a more Ganondorf-esque figure. Which I sort of got; as awesome as Ghirahim was he was a bit goofy, even in the end, and he had to achieve some sort of success. Still though.

spot on with all of the criticism, the fact that every little thing needs an unskippable cutscene was ridiculous and the text after repeated things like the bamboo game was so frustrating. I really WANT to say SS is one of the best games in the series for everything it does well, but it's such a flawed game at the same time.

Same. Like, the things it does well are so great. I absolutely love the bow and its legitimate viability as a weapon, Link's movement, how they chose to do upgrades and buying potions and being able to keep a set of items on you. Puzzles are fantastic. The combat is AMAZING. It's by far the best story and cast in the series. Ghirahim's probably my favorite villain in the series; he achieved a more defined and unique personality in one game than Ganondorf and Vaati could dream of in all their titles. There are a ton of places where there's absolutely brilliant game design and you can really just tell someone like Miyamoto was watching over someone's shoulder and saw something and was like, "Oh, if we do this, then the player can see that and that can be a hint for how to use that item in that next puzzle!" They designed nearly all the "big" gameplay elements to perfection. But then the flaws.... they're not the biggest flaws but they're just inexcusable and so numerous that they legitimately get in the way of my enjoyment of the game. They were just so blatantly obvious and present throughout the whole game that it it's inexcusable. I mean sure, Wind Waker has its faults but even when I'm playing through now, outside of the needlessly repetitive and long instrument usage, the faults aren't huge enough to really scream at me and find myself being reminded of their presence constantly. ...until the tri-force.

Really, SS does so many more things better than any other game in the series does them... but then inexplicably fails at really basic things and does them far worse than any other game in the series. On one end, the pros are amazing and the gameplay stretches where I'm dealing with nothing but combat and puzzle solving and all are the defacto best Zelda experience I've ever had; maybe some of the best designed gaming I've ever experienced, but the lows are present so often and just take away from the experience to such a huge extent. My opinion on where it goes on my ranking heirarchy for now really all depends on what part I've just played and it's inclined to shoot high on my rankings as I just took on the final boss and watched the credits sequence... but at the same time I know I could never give the game higher than an 8/10 and that if I had just decided to take a break at the whole Tadtones bit or anywhere during the lead-up to the Ancient Cistern (which is another thing-seriously? Making us go all the way to the back of the dungeon for water with a half-hearted attempt to make it more than just running straight to the end of the dungeon)... it'd probably be struggling at the bottom of my top 5.

OKAY FINALLY DONE WITH THIS GOING TO BED

MORE CONT.

Pacing was also kinda ehh. While I loved the long overworld stretches that were only made possible by addressing the overworld how the game did, it really slowed down after the 3rd dungeon. Up until then it felt like you were on an urgent chase. Afterward... go take just as much time as you did before with constant story progression.... with gathering flames instead. Don't get me wrong, Fire Sanctuary, the Sand Ocean, Ship, and that poor ole' Skipper were all awesome. But story development fell to a huge halt during that period. They kept you going through a sense of urgency via the Imprisoned's escape but that didn't do anything to make up for the relative lack of story progression compared to the first 3 dungeons; it really just made me feel like Link probably shouldn't be helping people up in Skyloft 'cause s***, he doesn't exactly have time.

And lastly, as far as I can think of for now, is motion controls. Again, the item use and combat were fantastic. But the swimming and flying were just unnecessary. Flying was impossible to control precisely, as was painfully evident during the Levias fight. Though the way those eyes moved as Levias moved did not help either. And plainly, flying and maintaining a straight course was unnecessarily hard due to how the turning worked. Chasing/attacking things in the sky was a crap-shoot too. Sky-diving/freefalling was ehh, it wasn't impossible to control but the leaning just never felt like it was something I really "had," even once I understood how to get Link to go in the direction I wanted. Trying to do that Fun Fun wheel thing just feels way too much like luck in terms of making it in the rings without hitting a ball, which it shouldn't if the controls are worth using. Swimming they clearly designed around the fact it was imprecise given the amount of leeway you got with jumping gates and slamming into enemies and how consistently a spin jump out of the water would find you still on land at the end of the somersault. But god damn, if you have to design it with that much leeway, why the hell are you bothering? If you have to try to make it work artificially as well as control stick based control naturally works, then the system isn't good nor worth using.

Edit: Oh also the underground fighting bits with the Moldorms were kinda stupid. Mostly not frustrating and justifiable but the difficulty in making yourself face the right direction sometimes made the experience rather annoying, as did it when you used up a whole stamina bar and not once did the worm decide to stop at a cross-section and decide which way to go.

Nice posts, Azp. I agree with many of your criticisms, so being the thickheaded, unreasonable, evil fanboy that I am, I'm going to give my own thoughts while focusing more on what Skyward Sword does well. Foibles there may be!, but I don't think they are severe enough to sully an otherwise outstanding game. And that's what SS is. There is way too much handholding. The inability to skip text and certain cutscenes is frustrating. There are sections - such as the Tadtones quest and at least one of the three Imprisoned fights - which can be skipped altogether. These are definite flaws, and I wish Nintendo would at least address the text and cutscenes when this game is inevitably re-released in HD for the WiiU.

That said

This game has some of the finest level design and funnest gameplay in gaming history, or at least in any game I've ever played. The motion-controlled swordplay brings with it easily the best combat in the series, if not the best combat in the genre. As I've said before, a precise Wii-mote swing to the open area of a guarded Stalfos is so, so, SO much more satisfying than button presses. I'm almost afraid to go back to the older 3D Zeldas after experiencing this swordplay. And yeah, as you said Azp, the bow and clawshots are both at their best here. For me, however, the Beetle stole the show. It was used often throughout the game, and it's now probably my favorite item in Zelda history. I was so skeptical when Miyamoto unveiled it last year, but it blew away my expectations and dominated the game.

Music and visuals are subjective, but I loved this game's visual style and curse Nintendo for the inability to release it in HD, and I'm a big fan of the soundtrack, which I feel is a return to Zelda form after the disappointment of TP's tunes. The game also nails that "Zelda charm" which Liquid Wind has mentioned before, gives us the most beautiful and heartwarming relationship yet between Zelda and Link, and finishes on a much stronger note than Twilight Princess, which really dropped the ball with its final dungeons and boss fights. It also offers seven dungeons without a single stinker. This may be the first Zelda game where I'd consider every dungeon to be at least solid. Earlier titles like Ocarina and Twilight Princess offered some real gems, but they also had crap mired in between. Not so here.

Yes, there are flaws, but for me, the triumphs soar so far beyond them that I'd be lying to myself by not calling it one of the series' best. Like OoT, I actually think this game could use a direct sequel, especially since it ends at what seems to be such a pivotal moment in the Zelda timeline. You can easily bring back this game's Link, Zelda, and Groose for another adventure, and as a direct sequel (like MM was to OoT), it wouldn't take five years to get.

Anyway, this will probably be my last meaty post in here, as I've just conquered Hero Mode and wanted to give my final thoughts. I'll probably archive this topic since it's brimming with good discussion and good times.

Overall it was the best set of items in a Zelda that I've played (aka, all but TP, ST, and PH)

wth play TP

Great game, wayyy over-hated. Fantastic dungeons, fantastic bosses, and until SS came out, Midna was the greatest character in the series.

You can go on without playing ST and PH though. Those actual bad experiences.

Nah, no need to play TP. It's like SS but but worse. Dull art style, horrible controls/gameplay(Wii version), long annoying dungeons, wolf Link sucks, finding those stupid bugs as wolf Link is just horrible. It's just long and boring really. :/

I'm not saying it's flawless - but a few flaws don't make a game unplayable. Hell, Skyward Sword probably has even more flaws than Twilight Princcess.

Major disagree on hating the art style though. And I can't imagine hating on the dungeons - TP's dungeons are up with Skyward Sword for best in the series. Hating Wolf Link and the Bug Quests is pretty much the exact same complaint, and it's equivalent to Skyward Sword's trials.

Overall, I'd say the controls were more fun than classic Zelda. Swordplay was the only dumb thing but I got used to it. Clawshot controls are even better than Skyward Sword (combines control stick with IR pointing, so you can turn yourself while aiming, also TP Clawshot has a cool chain slide functionality that SS doesn't), bow controls are tied with SS's (has the control stick thing, but lacks the C-stick awesomeness), every other item is great to use, and the Hidden Moves are a really awesome touch to the swordplay (one thing I was disappointed that SS didn't keep).

TP actually is pretty close to flawless, as close as zelda has gotten anyway. TP's problem is more in a general lack of creativity, the whole game feels very lifeless as a result. but it's a much more refined game than SS is, have to give it that.

Screw you GMUN, ST was an awesome game and he should play it. PH not so much.

Anyway, haven't had much time to play until recently, just beat the third Silent Realm challenge. That was possibly the most terrifying experience I've ever had in a video game. Unlike the first two, I spent ages with the Guardians after me, and that was pretty damn intense.

Also, I'm amazed at how the game just keeps getting progressively better so far. It's paced itself perfectly. The combo of Sand Sea and Sand Ship was one of the best experiences I've had with games!

Also am I the only one who doesn't mind having to take a few measly seconds to read a bit more text. I mean, some of Fi's dialogue is a little redundant, but when we get to things like text speed, then it gets just finicky. There's a reason stuff like that doesn't come up in QA: nobody cares.

I'm not saying the game is perfect (though it is vying for the spot of my favourite Zelda game) but if you're going to complain about something, why that?

It's not so much the text speed on its own, but Fi's constant interruptions to make banal statements at slow speeds that kill the immersion. It doesn't ruin the game, but it's oddly bad design given how great the rest of the game is.

I don't think the game has the same highs, but even as a big TP fan, I'd concede SS is the better game.

I loved the silent realms... except for being forced to watch eyes light up every single time I got caught in a spotlight or something. I'd use those 5 seconds wasted to imagine how much better that could've be if we got to control Link and run the hell away while watching in real time as the monsters came to life and the spotlight-ghost thing freaked out all around us.

Also trust me, I'd play TP, but I am cripplingly arachnophobic, and those things that drop down on you in the 2nd and 6th dungeons have some particular elements that trigger my phobia particularly badly and make the game impossible for me to beat. I honestly really want to play it; I've seen a lot of the game one way or another, but the phobia gets in the way. Thankfully, SS' art style (and amazing choice to make the "Thousand-year Arachnid" a fairly tame scorpion, unlike the terrors that are New Vegas' Radscorps) kept this game's Skultullas mild enough for me. >_> Though I still did not appreciate when one of those things hopped on Link and started humping him...

ST and PH though I'll never play for just the sake of f*** the gameplay. I've despised PH (and by proxy ST) from the moment I heard about the game being touch controlled the way it is rather than functioning like a traditional 2D Zelda.
