I'd rather not read any of this topic, since I had to save SOME games for my Christmas list, and don't want to be spoiled on anything.

....... except when I was playing the demo 3 weeks ago, there was a room in the forest-esque Temple that I played in which I had no idea what to do. You jump down a ledge, and you go up some stairs into a room where you fight a spider. After you defeat it, there are three eyes on the wall, and a movable box hanging from the ceiling. What's the "answer" to that particular room? I feel like I tried everything, and I still wonder now what you're supposed to do there.

Hint version: You need all eyes on you. Also, notice that the eyeballs all stare at the tip of your sword.

Augh, I tried slashing at them, but it seemed like they closed if I got too close, and there was too tight of a window there for that to be the right answer. OK, at least I know what I did wrong, thanks.

DUNGEON SPOILERS

Just beat Dungeon #7. It was great, but I'm not sure if it's this game's best. The puzzles (and combat) were a lot of fun, and I was impressed with the overarching idea of rearranging the rooms, but a dungeon can't have its own atmosphere when it's reusing art styles and gameplay from other dungeons. That hurt it a bit, but it's still awesome imo.

Holy Toledo Tier
Ancient Cistern
Lanayru Mining Facility

Great Tier
Earth Temple
Sandship
Sky Keep
Skyview Temple

Solid Tier
Fire Sanctuary

Not sure if this game has fanboy'd me into not seeing objectively, but I don't think SS had one bad dungeon. I love their streamlined designs, their increased focus on combat and action, their use of items, and their enormous rooms. Fire Sanctuary was the only disappointing one, but I still wouldn't call it bad. The rest of em just raised the bar too high. I also seem to be up on the Earth Temple a lot more than most people. I guess I just really loved that central room and the way it kept expanding as you discovered more.

Anyway, still gotta beat this, but I'm saving that for tonight!

SS doesn't have a single bad dungeon, best overall collection of dungeons in the series

and I agree that the last temple, while great in concept, really should have had it's own unique architecture and style rather than reusing other themes.

gotta say I prefer fujibayashi as a director at this point even though MM is my favorite, you can see the enthusiasm for the series that he has in SS. aonuma did make some nice games but he said himself that the original zelda just frustrated him to the point of thinking "I'd never want to make a game like this", WW and TP weren't BAD by any stretch of the imagination, they were highly refined and valuable games in their own right...but they really lacked the creative spark that previous zelda games had had and that skyward sword has. I think it just really shows when someone is passionate about their craft, better off having a director that truly loves the series.

That is indeed what it means. I think the "too much filler" complaints have been largely levied on this part of the game. One of these parts is pretty bad, but one is alright, and another is brilliant.

Brilliant = Eldin
Alright = Lanayru
Bad = Faron

Right? I was hyped for the other two after I did the Eldin section, but was somewhat let down.

<Dungeon Spoilers>

I understand the point about Sky Keep not having its own style, but the individual rooms and the overarching puzzle were awesome enough to overweigh that IMO.

Amazing Tier:
Sky Keep
Ancient Cistern

Excellent Tier:
Earth Temple
Sandship
Skyview Temple (mostly for the beetle and the boss fight)

Good Tier:
Fire Sanctuary (has the best boss fight though!)
Lanaryu Mining Facility

But honestly, talking about SS and only mentioning the dungeons undermines probably it's biggest strength - what goes on between them. I'd argue the first Faron Woods section was outright better than Skyview Temple, and the Lanaryu section leading up to LMF was better as well. The Eldin Volcano is the location for one of the best sections in the whole game near the end. The four Spirit Realm challenges take place outside too and they're a fun change of pace IMO. I haven't mentioned the Sandsea section before the fifth dungeon either, which was excellent. And of course, there's everything going on up in the sky. That's the mark I think Fujibayashi has left on this Zelda - not so much the motion controls, excellent as they are for swordplay.

The Lanayru region in general is probably my favorite area in all of Zelda now. Both dungeons rocked, and as you said, everything in between might have rocked even harder. I remember someone wishing earlier that SS should have gotten a true sky dungeon like City in the Sky, but I think the Clawshot portions of Lanayru really helped fill that void. Heck, even the Sandship had you fighting and exploring up high for a hidden treasure.

Also, criminal lack of praise for Lanayru's Sea. Something like that is what really separates a truly magical game from an ordinary one. It's just a beautiful idea and I wish some treasures were hidden there to keep us exploring that area longer.

Lanayru is definitely my favourite region. Dungeons are really great (I used to really hate 3 because I hate the gust blower, but after my 3rd playthrough of it I just love the non-gust parts too much). Every time you go Lanayru it's fantastic, inside and outside dungeons... it helps that timestones are awesome.

Ancient Cistern is still the greatest dungeon though.

What's with the Zelda obsession with so many bosses having one big eye? They're all [Do Something] to stun the boss/make it fall over/open eye and then stab the eye with your sword to kill them. They're not bad bosses, but...

Ok guys - I'll give you this one. I didn't have to shoot the one big eye. I had to kill the multiple eye tentacles before stabbing the one big parasite eye. That had many eyes on the wings I needed to destroy so I could

stun the boss/make it fall over/open eye and then stab the eye.

I know it's a small complaint, but really.

BOSS NAME AND EYE SPOILERS

Ghirahim - Normal eyes that got left alone.
Scaldera - one big eye. Kill it by stabbing the one eye after it's been stunned.
Moldarach - one big eye. Kill it by stabbing the one big eye after it's been stunned. By slashing at it's claws/limbs. Which have eye-like markings on. (They might actually be eyes)
Koloktos - one big sphere. Kill it by stabbing the big red sphere after it's been stunned. By chopping off all it's arms/limbs.
Tnetalus - one big eye. Kill it by stabbing the one big eye after it's been stunned. By chopping off all it's arms/limbs/tentacles.
Ghirahim again - Still no big eye.
Levias - Lots of tentacle eyes. Reveal the real boss Bilocyte by chopping off all it's tentacles. Which have eyes on them.
Bilocyte - Literally, just one big eye with wings. Kill it by stabbing the one big eye after it's been stunned. After chopping off all it's limbs/wings. Which have eyes on them.

Imprisoned (multiple times) - Has a spike instead of an eye. And toenails. Weird.

***SPOILERS***

I really like that a few of the bosses had alternate ways of beating them- I wish they'd done more of it ('I wish they'd done more with x' is like 90% of my complaints with the game). Him, the imprisoned the 90 times you fight it, ghirarim's last phase on his last fight (at least I assume you could play tennis with him I refuse to do that because it got played out like 5 games ago damn you nintendo), and the buddhist parable/persona rip off boss made boss rush a lot more fun to experiment with.

YOU CAN DO WHAT

Oh man, and I just beat it and started Hero Mode. Guess I gotta play through one more time to beat him "the right way."

In any case

that boss fight
that ending
that GAME

Skyward Sword, imo, easily trumps Twilight Princess and Wind Waker, making it the best Zelda game in over a decade. The very fact that it's even in the conversation with Ocarina and Majora makes it an incredible achievement. It might be my second favorite game in the series. Just too damn good from start to finish.

I think the pattern is possibly due to the fact they can now- I don't think Dolphin and GC homebrew scene really hits its stride till near the end of its life, whereas Wii emulation +homebrew is almost as old as the system itself.

Otherwise I'm pretty sure we'd have seen stuff like "double sailing speed" and "Skip triforce hunt" in WW, not to mention TP's bloody rupees and chest nonsense.
