Welcome to another round of the Best OST Contest, where we decide the best game soundtrack by voting on the songs in it.
Match Rules: * You must listen to both songs in the match. Use the provided links. * You must vote on the songs in the match. Not the game's overall music. Not how much you like the game itself. ***VOTE ON THE SONGS*** * To help enforce rule 2, All votes must be given for the song title, not the game or the seed number. No exceptions.
Other details: * The match will last 24 hours from the time this thread is posted. Regardless of when the next day's topic goes up, or when the current topic actually gets counted and closed, votes count up to 24.0 hours after the match's beginning. * Normal contest rules apply regarding alts, rallying, multi-voting, etc. * No mid-thread tallies, or comments related to a vote count. It can influence the voters. Regardless of how excited you may be, please let things evolve naturally. * If there are two matches, you do not have to vote for both. If you want to change your vote, please identify that it is a change to your vote. Do not erase the old vote. * Advanced voting is allowed. Contact me with your vote by PM. Check the spreadsheet for the appropriate songs to listen to: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AoS8GGHS9FDGdFprRGpQa3ZtRGcwTTM5VTQ2SWViUGc&hl=en_US * Re-read the third rule. Votes naming only the game will not be counted.
The spirit of this contest is a bit different from what you might be used to in a contest. Upsets are expected. The tournament will be double elimination, so if your favorite game loses here, it isn't done. You can see the rest of the rules on the contest or figure out how the heck we got to where we are here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/8-gamefaqs-contests/60522913
Previous results: a. What began as a very tight contest with a slight lead to competitior Main Theme of Dungeon Fighter Online turned into a romp when Magical Dreamers went on an 8-0 run to finish things off and survive an early scare. Chrono Cross advances 20-12. b. Flight was not faring so well early on against Neverending Journey, but did somehow eventually pull up to losing by the exact same margin. Lost Odyssey advances 20-12.
------------------------------------------ 7. Touhou 7: Perfect Cherry Blossom vs 10. Shatter
kinda unfair to cave story that whoever nominated SoM made it so front loaded but that's a risk that this contest format carries with it, it is of course not necessarily reflective of the most liked OST, hope to see cave story bounce back in losers
argon refinery has a good methodical beat and some nice sound design but it meanders a lot and never really brings in a very interesting melody. crystalized silver is kind of its stellar opposite, spastic to the max, old ass samples that sound like some $50 keyboard you'd buy for your kids, catchy melody with fast arps...the brass is pretty cheese but I gotta give it to what I think of as the better composition
--- It is also of note that apparently the composer of this did not know anything about music when he made this, and that is probably why this is so awesome to me. The chord progression and melody are considerably non-traditional but they don't really sound like it because Pixel spent enough time to make this sound nice to him. Not bound by pointless musical "rules" that others might be I THINK is probably why a lot of Cave Story music is unintentionally more complex than it might be otherwise. So I think that is KOOL!
yeah I've read this that he pretty much trial and error'd the whole soundtrack not really knowing anything about music before that. pretty impressive and there are some songs from cave story I really love, the program he used to compose it is actually available too but it didn't have an english patch when I tried it so I couldn't do too much with it
--- A lot of people might be bothered by it's length, or it not going anywhere melodically, but that is almost NEVER an issue to me. I'd consider the feel of the whole thing overall a more important aspect of this particular piece, and this does that in a way I like.
oddly enough I actually have made a lot of music like this and do listen to a lot of more meditative kind of music that isn't that varied or melodic but in this case it just didn't get me as much as its opponent, never heard of shatter before though so it might impress me in a future round
After a couple of weak days, Day 4 brings things back up to the same level of awesomeness as Day 1.
Argon Refinery beats most of the songs from the past two days, but it doesn't beat Crystallized Silver. Fear of the Heavens is pretty good...for a Secret of Mana song. Plantation gets this, but this isn't as good as the first match.

This is what I get for not testing the links before I run out. Thank you, Pikachu.

Of course, there's the possibility of going up against freaking worldenddominator in round 1, too, and having that not be specifically frontloaded. I figure it's best to play the odds. You make round 3 if either of your first two songs can pull out a win, but making it to song 4 is a lot more selective and not even half the games are gonna get there. Not even a fifth get to song 5. IMHO, frontloading is perfectly valid for making sure you get out of the starting gate. Imagine if that run of Magical Dreamers votes hadn't surfaced yesterday -- we'd be looking at DFO advancing rather than CC. Angel's Fear is the best song off Secret of Mana, but I'm fairly confident in saying that like 61 other games in this bracket, SoM is not too likely to make the finals.
In spite of that, there was a surprising percentage of Cave Story pickers for bracket predictions.
IIRC Angel's Fear lost to a pretty bad song early in VGMC5. That's why I thought it'd lose, but apparently Cave Story Main Theme isn't as popular as I thought it'd be. Though it could still pull it out.
Fear of the Heavens is good, but my favorite SoM song, The Dark Star, isn't even in the bracket I don't think. :( Also have to support my own nom, even though it looks like it's going down to the loser's bracket!
Crystallized Silver - Didn't like either, but Refinery dragged on for so long without ever impressing me. Angel's Fear - Plantation impresses me at first, but just annoys me as soon as 0:45 hits and everything after 1:35. Fear of the Heavens is just beautiful.
I was looking forward to see Mycro's opinion on Argon Refinery. I was not disappointed.
First match was oddly close, and I practically flipped a coin. In the second match, however, I don't like the style of Cave Story's theme at all. Not that it's necessarily bad, but it just isn't my cup of tea. Fear of the Heavens wins by a decent margin.

Nominate Left Pong Paddle vs. Right Pong Paddle for the Rivalry Contest!
I love almost every Touhou piece, especially Perfect Cherry Blossom's music. This link to Crystallized Silver sounded a bit strange, but I still went with it. Argon's Refinery was actually catchy, just not as appealing to me. Neither of the second two really resonated with me, but Angel's Fear was not making any impact while I sort of liked Main Theme, so there you go. Weakest match for me so far, that last one, but I really do not care for Secret of Mana tracks it seems.

You laugh at my Celtic Guardian, until I use my Scapegoat, and then United We Stand, Mage Power, and 3 Axe Of Despairs, with Gaia Power out. 11900/7800
Argon Refinery - wouldn't be surprised if Crystallized Silver was my least favorite song in this whole contest. my poor ears. Cave Story Main Theme - wow what a tough match. basically my favorites from each game.
Argon Refinery was good, but I definitely feel it could have done more with the 9ish minutes it had. There was no way to justify voting against it though; Crystallized Silver is absolutely disgusting >.>
Angel's Fear
I have to say that this was an unexpectedly tough decision for me :/
Shatter would be great if it was more original. With that much length you have no excuse to go proggy. It's mandatory to avoid suckage. Second one is just unlucky placement, because Cave Story doesn't have enough pieces that are good for this contest.

From: Xuxon | #043 i don't see any rule against it
Would rather not force Azuarc to check through post versions while counting the votes. It just opens a very annoying can of worms.

You can change your vote. Just be perfectly clear that your vote is a chance and indicate which vote, specifically, you are changing. If your vote had been Crystallized Silver / Plantation and you changed it to Argon Refinery / Plantation, I wouldn't want to mistakedly add another vote to Plantation and take one from Angel's Fear.
And yes, I will probably go back to confirm your earlier vote was a change, but it's not a huge deal to check through 40 vote posts, which is about where we've topped out so far.
