Terra uses magic.

No big deal, right? She's a magic user; what else is she supposed to use? In your average game, no one would have batted an eyelash. Luckily for us, Sakaguchi and the cats at old Square show remarkable attention to detail and quality. Remember... Locke and Edgar haven't seen Terra use magic yet, and in this game, magic is KIND OF A BIG DEAL.

Their reactions are hysterical. They have a conversation about it right there during the fight, and both swoon when Terra gives them an uncharacteristically coquettish wink.

Empowered by the prospect of Terra tang, the boys jump back into the thick of things and make short order of the bosses. We race past a seething Kefka. Haven't seen the last of him! Gameplay returns to show me now riding a Chocobo in the overworld. This looks a lot different. It actually looks a lot more 3D-ish than traversing through the overworld on foot, and is a bit more confusing for me. Sure I'll get the hang of it.

With little else to do here, we head for a cave that cuts through a mountain and into the village of South Figaro. I enter the cave, taste its healing waters, uncover its booty, emerge out the other side, and enter the small town. I explore a bit of South Figaro before finding a save point and calling it a session. Might do another late night session, but probably not.

Things are going pretty well so far. I don't like it as much as Chrono Trigger, but I'm certainly not disappointed. That Terra magic cutscene really caught me by blissful surprise. Best part of the game so far. I hope there's more of that, because once again, stuff like that is the old-school gaming charm that's so hard to pull off nowadays. I love it.

I explore this dark cave, laying waste to every Repo Man (...I love you, old Square) in my way. We fight an easy slug boss - the first of the game - before uncovering the Esper. To my surprise, it seems like a living creature encased in ice. Before the trio can remove it, it reacts to Terra's presence. Catastrophically, Vicks and Wedge are fried.

One of these games, they'll make it to the end. Farewell ye valiant fools. Terra is knocked unconscious by the violent reaction and awakens in a small snowy village. She is being tended to by an old man. He is part of the Returners, an underground resistance against the Empire (man, lots of Star Wars references here!). Soon after Terra regains consciousness and realizes she has no memory, Empire soldiers knock at the door demanding her return. The old man distracts them long enough for Terra to make a break for it through some caves. Unfortunately, she can't outrun the soldiers for long. She is cornered, falls through some cracks in the cave floor, and is unconscious and helpless yet again. Terra, maybe Terra's Theme is not for youuuuu

The old man sends Locke, a young treasure hunter/thief, to assist Terra. He discovers her, still KO'd, and with the aid of some very helpful and ass kicking Moogles (including Mog, though he didn't join the party yet), protects her from more soldiers. Terra recovers and the two make a break for it, opting to seek refuge in Castle Figaro.

Here's my glimpse of the overworld. It seems to use a very primitive 3D visual look, not too dissimilar from FFVII. It's not bad for the SNES, but I prefer Chrono Trigger's style. We trek through the desert carefully, as enemies are tougher here. Castle Figaro is in the middle of the desert; we enter and find Edgar, the youthful, dashing, womanizing king. He unsuccessfully hits on Terra and catches up with Locke. Apparently, though Edgar pledges allegiance to the Empire, he is secretly allied with The Returners and knows Locke well.

I take Terra and explore the castle, discovering that Edgar had a twin brother, Sabin, who left the castle in order to run awesome user contests. Actually, it had to do with the death of the twins' father or something. No one knows Sabin's current whereabouts, but I get the feeling I'll see him later. Probably against icon in the finals.

As Terra is devising a plan to vote rally against ****ing Alanna (okay no more I swear), Edgar is visited by Kefka in all his smarmy, b****y glory. Kefka, who serves the Empirical King Gestahl, demands Terra's return. He is none too happy when Edgar lies to him, as he and his henchmen proceed to light the whole castle on fire. Fortunately for La Resistance, Castle Figaro is always prepared! In an awesome cutscene, the three principal players (for the slow among us, that would be Terra, Locke, and Edgar) make a break for it on Chocobos while the entire freakin castle does a Power Rangers morph and sinks under the sand for safety. Kefka is flabbergasted and sends his mech-riding (self-important swine!) henchman after our Chocobo riding heroes.

They catch up to us and it's time for a boss fight. During the actual fight itself, something I would never have expected happened - I was treated to what must have be one of the best cutscenes in the game.

I also like CT's overworld a little more.

And man, imagine what happened if that esper didn't knock off Terra's slave crown. If the Final Fantasy series is about bringing the world right from the brink of disaster, FF6 may very well exemplify what FF is all about.

Then again, it's still the ONLY FF I've beaten! I know I've been talking about it a lot, but I hope to start FF7 in the final week of this month at least, with Xenogears and Final Fantasy Tactics planned out as further excursions into Square's empire (to be snuck in the middle of some MGS games). I was also interested in FF8/9/10/13 (not 12 because it doesn't come from the same development team).

Good question. Combination of a lot of things. When it comes to big games like this (with treasures, secrets, and bonus quests), I love to explore everything. Hell, I feel like I need to do it, as if I'm shortchanging myself if I just charge through. I ran my FFVII clock to 99:99 no problemo. My FFX file is at like 150 hours. My Mass Effect and KotOR runs always take like 30-40 hours because I have to do everything.

I would usually play in longer chunks (when I'm hooked on a game and not busy, I can put in like 12 hours on a lazy Saturday). You're right, I've been busier lately, but that might not be the main reason for these short stints. It may actually be these playthrough topics. They're a lot of fun to do, and I like to make each write-up worthwhile. If I play for ten solid hours before inking my thoughts, I think the writing will lose a lot of quality.

Anyway, I've explored the heck out of South Figaro. An old man is asking for Cider, but I can't seem to get any. Should I just soldier on and worry about it later?

South Figaro is a peaceful town with some very relaxing music. I use this respite from battle to heal up, explore, talk to peeps, and beef up my party. I get the strongest sword for Terra and Bio-Blaster foo Edgar. Edgar seems like a better choice for strong swords, but since his Auto-Crossbow seems broken this point in the game, I'll have him primarily use that. Also bought some defensive items for everyone and some Relics, including sprint shoes so I could move around more quickly.

I learn that my next destination is Mt. Colt. Apparently, some bad dudes are training martial arts there - time for a challenge! I make my way to and through the mountain, chasing a shadowy figure. Edgar's Tools and Terra's Magic make short work of the random encounters along the way. We finally reach the mysterious figure, which turns out to be Vargas, one of the leaders of these bad dudes. He mentions Sabin, which piques Edgar's interest, but we're thrown into a boss fight before we can question the bad dude.

It's us versus Vargas and his two bear guardian things. Vargas is freakin' huge and imposing in the battle screen - much different than the regular world screen where he looks just like us. This makes me wonder about something... how must we look to them? In the transition between regular and battle screens, puppies turn into enormous wolves and midget men become Greek gods. Maybe we look just as imposing! Probably not.

Anyway, the first portion of the fight ain't too bad, but then Vargas gets pissed and decides to lay waste to us befoooooore... SABIN FIGARO OUTTA ****ING NOWHERE. They argue about some karate kid crap and it's suddenly Vargas vs. Sabin to end the boss fight. I lose because I can't figure out when to enter the inputs for Blitz. I'll try again later.

Very short game sitting, but that's because it's time to work on my tan. I'll pick it up in a few hours.

Personally I think Yoblazer will like Locke, Edgar, Cyan and Celes knowing him. They are the most Yoblazer-y characters.

Anyway how the blitz works is press A once then input your command then hit A again.

So A forward back forward A for Pummel.

also, Blitz Tipz

for diagonal blitz inputs, you can just tap one of the directions it's pointing to, instead of pressing an actual diagonal input.

like for instance, aurobolt is down -> down-left -> left

in this case you can just press down -> down -> left

or even down -> left -> left

Second time's a charm, as I Pummel Vargas relentlessly. He dead. Our foe vanquished, the jacked up Sabin Figaro joins the party. We quickly trek to the Returner Hideout and a chat with Banon, the group's leader. When we get there, Banon and the others ask Terra for her help. They're all "pretty please with a cherry on top" in an attempt to distinguish themselves from the evil Empire, which enslaved her. I answer.

No.
No.
No.

lololol Japanese RPGs from 1994. I figure I'll just answer negatory until Banon's responses start looping, but then... oh crap. One of our troops stumbles in, beaten to a pulp. The Empire have launched an assault and are closing in! Now the party has no choice but to make a break for it. Locke goes solo to impede Kefka & Co's progress, while the rest of us (Banon has replaced Locke) make an aquatic escape via raft. The raft section is pretty cool - nonstop fighting against new enemies. We are tasked to keep Banon alive or lose the game. Fortunately, the old fart proves to be very valuable in combat, healing the whole party with no MP cost. After making some fresh sushi and saving, we eventually reach another boss fight.

And oh boy, guess who it is.

GAME OVER! It's Ultros! Affectionately referred to as "Uncle Ulty" by fans, Ultros is a recurring, loud-mouthed, hilarious octopus who I have known about for years. He precedes every attack with inane gibberish and can't keep his damn trap shut. Honestly, who in the hell makes an octopus talk? Old Square, that's who! And I love them for it. The slimy smiling bastard gives a good fight, but we eventually beat him into retreat.

That ain't good enough for Sabin. Proving that what he is equal parts muscle and stupidity, he jumps into the water to give chase. Of course, he is swept away and separated by the party. Now we're really disbanded, as the game breaks into an "out of body" sequence. I'm in control of Mog, who has the power to break the fourth wall. Mog lets me know that I can now either play as Locke to impede the Empire, as Terra and Edgar to protect Banon, or as Sabin to visit Ariel.

And that's where I've saved. Still trying to pick one. Couple things:

1. My "no no no" responses to Banon don't really affect anything, right?
2. I'm gonna get to play all three of the Locke/Sabin/Everyone Else scenarios, right? Order is irrelevant?

Terra, Edgar, Banon Scenario

Very brief and disappointing. We finish the rafting, emerge in the overworld, sneak back into Narshe, and make it back to Arvis's house, the one that Terra woke up in after discovering the Esper. We learn from Arvis that Narshe is neutral in the Empire/Returners conflict and that the people have gone a bit crazy since the Esper was discovered. Arvis and Banon ask Terra for help, believing that she can unlock some secrets about the Esper and assuage the village's people.

That's it. The whole thing barely took 20 minutes, and I was lost in the overworld for most of it. Hope the other two are better.

(Banon's healing is so broken tier, though; gonna miss this guy)
