From what I've heard, there's always a random chance of Shadow leaving after any battle in the overworld. However, this didn't seem to be true when I was playing through the game months ago (although that was the GBA version, who knows?).

1/16 random chance he leaves after any battle between the Imperial Camp and the Train.

Which basically means the Overworld and the Forest are the danger zones.

Sabin's Scenario

This will need two posts.

I begin immediately in control of the Figaroen Suplex Machine, who has, off screen, survived the perilous waters and emerged in a new section of the overworld. The only nearby landmark is a lone house, so I enter and see Shadow slittin momma throats outside (this guy are sick). I approach - nervously and clumsily because of my lifelong ninja fetish - and he agrees to join me, but warns that he may leave at any time. Some Shadow better than no Shadow, I say! In the house is an old man who thinks we are licensed contractors there to fix the place. I figure this is a puzzle for later. I leave without fixing anything, terrified of what the old man will do to my Angie's List rep. We head south through the overworld and eventually find an Imperial camp.

As we arrive, the narrative shifts, and I find myself in control of Cyan, a top ranking soldier for the kingdom of Doan. The kingdom is under Imperial attack, and Cyan's grunts beckon for his help. Cyan, who is gruff looking but gentlemanly and principled, vanquishes the Empire's top guys, and they go scurrying. I'm back in control of Sabin and Shadow at the Imperial camp.

We make our way cautiously through the camp and overhear an enraged Kefka, seething that the attack on Doan was repelled. He fantasizes about overtaking the kingdom by poisoning its waters, giving no thought to the lives of women and children. Truly a bastard. Fortunately for the gentleman's art of war, Kefka isn't in charge here. General Leo is. Despite serving the evil Empire, Leo is of such high character that Sabin remarks "he'd be my friend if he wasn't my enemy." The good general wishes to overtake Doan with minimal losses on both sides. However, and INCREDIBLY AND SHOCKINGLY, General Leo is summoned away by the Emperor, leaving Kefka in charge. I guess Leo was just being build up for later? Maybe he joins the part or something. Anyway, Kefka takes advantage by immediately poisoning the waters (kinda looks like he does it by taking a monster piss in the river). Gwee hee hee, clown urine! We shift back in control of Cyan.

Cyan doesn't discover the poisoned water supply until it's too late. His troops begin to fall around him. Fearing for the king, he rushes to the throne room only to find his lord at death's door. The king of Doan breathes his last breath. Crushed, Cyan goes to check on his family... only to realize that both his wife and young son have drunk the tainted water. He pulls his son's lifeless body out of bed and hears his wife's final words. I sit there kind of thankful that this scene wasn't done with 1080p graphics and a billion dollar budget. Even in sprite form, it was powerful, surprising, and a little too visceral. Wasn't expecting it. With nothing left to live for, Cyan goes berserk and charges the Imperial camp alone.

Sabin sees this and offers help. Cyan, Sabin, and Shadow work together to hijack some mech armors, chase Kefka outta there, and go to town on the rest of the camp. Still headed for Narshe, the party makes their way through a brief Phaaaaaaaaaaantom Foreeeeest (!!!). It's nothing special, but it is here where Shadow decides to take off after a random battle. Jokes on you, doucheface - I'll never use you again! His throw command sucked anyway because I hate losing ****. With their trio down to two (can you feel the love tonight?), Sabin and Cyan make their way to the Phaaaaaaaaantom Traaaaaaaaain. This place is more special.

Apparently, this is the train that ushers the recently dead to King Kai's house for training. For those unfamiliar with Dragonball Z, what I'm trying to say is that THE NEXT DIMENSION OH SHHHHH. The two tough guys realize they're not tough enough to stick around here forever, so they battle their way through the train's army of undead ghosts and ghouls. Some of the ghosts actually offer to join your party, which was a pleasant surprise and a nice way to make this place more interesting. We reach the end. Yes, the last boss is the train. Yes, I did suplex it. Twice. The defeated train (thank god this topic doesn't suck or else I'd have to spend the next 300 posts talking about this boss AHAHAHA GET IT) grants us exit and safe passage, but not before Cyan sees the spirits of his wife and son board. He is overcome with emotion and begs them to stop. They reciprocate his love with kind farewells. The journey continues.

Through the overworld, we find our path impeded by the majestic Barren Falls. To get where we need to go requires a leap of faith. We leap down the falls, Harrison Ford style, and make quick work of some piranhas on the way down.

We are now in a different section of the world map, near the town of Mobilz. I enter, talk to everyone, upgrade what I can, and help the injured soldier by mailing a love letter to his damsel. I stock up with healing items (including Dried Meat) and leave for the overworld. After winning a fight, I discover a goofy guy who dares to interrupt my ****ing victory fanfare. He's hungry, so I toss him some dried meat. He has a comical exchange with Sabin before joining my party. This is Gau, this game's Ayla if everything about Ayla was made boring and dumb. I will never use Gau. This is the last I will write about Gau.

Gau (****, guess I have to write more about him) is thankful for the meal and wants to repay Sabin and Cyan with his "shiny shiny treasure." We follow him to a mountain cave and eventually discover the treasure. It's... a diving helmet? Weird but useful, since we'll need this to traverse the river currents back to the northern portions of the overworld, near Narshe. We jump in the water and go. Some fights, some exploration, yada yada.

We find ourselves in the small port town of Nikeah, accessible only by water because the Final Fantasy universe has the god damned worst public infrastructure this side of a Ganon-ruled Hyrule. Contact your ****ing city council members, citizens of Nikeah. We hitch a ride aboard a ferry which takes us to South Figaro.

It's all autopilot from here, as the three groups (Terra/Edgar/Banon, Locke/Celes, and Sabin/Cyan/Gau) all meet up at Returners HQ in Narshe. Locke informs the group that the Empire plans an imminent attack on Narshe, despite the town's neutrality. Celes backs up his claims. The party, which has grown rather formidable, has their differences (Cyan is understandably distrusting of Celes, a former Imperial General), but they put those aside to FIGHT AS ONE.

Cutscene over, and I find myself out in the snow, in control of Terra, with the whole party accompanying me and waiting for our next move. I save and write this 24 hours later cuz I'm lazy like that.

I've wiped twice. Only Celes counters magic, and she only has one other person on her team (Cyan). If I had Celes, Cyan, and someone else, it would probably be easy. My other teams aren't well balanced either.

Actually, they're too well balanced. That's the problem. I should have overloaded one team.

Gau is only good if you take the time to train him.

Then again even his default moves are pretty good if you know how to use them.

Well, beat his dumb ass.

So far, I'm just not feeling Kefka. He's got a few cool lines, but I'm waiting for some motivation or something. "Sadistic clown for the hell of it" is Joker's shtick. Not really working with this guy. I'm sure he'll improve later on, but for now, Sephiroth is making Kefka look like his son, and he is a disappoint.

Gotta make a team to look for Terra. Should I include Locke because he has the closest bond with Terra, or is it meaningless? I wanna go Celes/Cyan/Sabin/Edgar.

Just go whatever team you like best. Doesn't usually matter who's in your party unless you HAVE to take them.

I'm not a big fan of Kefka either. Two best things he's got going for him are his theme song and his laugh.

Anyway, just to recap:

I had to protect Banon from Kefka's invading troops. This section was identical to the early one where Locke and the Moogles kept Terra safe. I can't be too sure, but I think I killed like 90% of the enemies with Sabin's Fire Dance. This guy is such a beast. Zangief with ****ing fire magic, I swear.

Kefka was a far cry from his walk-in-the-park soldiers. I died twice before chasing him off with a Runic/Dispatch combo from Celes and Cyan. Afterwards, the whole party gathered at the Esper to witness Terra suffer (or was she in ecstasy?) through an intense reaction. Before my very eyes, Terra transformed into... SSJ3? Seemed pretty damn close! She looked like an embodiment of pure energy before tearing through the overworld at a fantastic speed.

The party regrouped at Returners HQ and decided that they needed to follow and rescue Terra. I'm picking four to do this.
