al central is a pathetic POs joke that should forfeit it's playoff spot

the only chance that division has is a short series with verlander being stellar twice

then ALCS demolished by next team

Best case scenario: we clinch our spot early enough to get rest and set the rotation, meanwhile the Red Sox and Yankees continue to battle it out for the AL East until the final day despite both having clinched the playoffs 2 weeks earlier, and whoever wins comes into the series with the Tigers unprepared.

heard today that all of Verlander's stats this year already beat or are on pace to beat Roger Clemens stats during his MVP year in 86.

Since he's already got the Cy Young locked up, hopefully the sports writers at least put him in the discussion. Don't expect him to win that though.

which is a testament to why you're not a threat vs any good offensive team in a 7 game series. Which is why I don't want the Yanks facing the goddamn Tigers in that BS 5 game series. A joke, it'd be a real joke to lose to a team with one pitcher. Scherzer is ok, but he's still up and coming.

You. The tigers are 49-45 if you take away how awesome Verlander is. How does a team like that even deserve to make the playoffs. I sometimes wonder what's wrong with Chicago. Injuries aside, they're got a good hitting lineup with good speed... but man, Dunn really crapped the bed.

But yeah, Tigers are a joke, the whole AL central is just a walking cesspool. Called Tigers as division champs since day 1 with Minnesota close behind, but with all the injuries minnesota has had to deal with, it's a miracle they are as good as they are now record wise.

I wish american sports followed a more european model sometimes. Standings over the whole division thing, but divisions are still fun.

The last time the Tigers won a division, I was less than a year old. I'll take what I can get.

I'd like to say that I think Scherzer and Fister are pretty solid pitchers and under team control for a long time. Keep in mind that Scherzer actually spent the second half of the season outpitching Verlander. He just has such bad first halves. Rick Porcello is all over the map. July, he was 5-0 with a 3.06 ERA. August, he's 0-2 with a 9.15 ERA. But at 22 years old, I think I'm going to continue being patient with him. He shows enough promise.

I laugh, because the Indians sold their farm system for the sake Jimenez, who hasn't been any better than Fister. And we get to keep our stud prospect in Jacob Turner.

Thank God for that offense, though. Seems like everyone starting is hitting well (save Austin Jackson).

Verlander for Cy Young, Avila for MVP

Alex Avila has shocked the hell out of me. Hell, I didn't even want him catching most nights to start the season (even though V-Mart is pretty bad defensively at catcher). So glad I was wrong about him and Peralta.

I disagree, Konerko is more of a catalyst to his team and more important to their success than Bautista is to his team. Many of each team's offensive stats are similar except slugging and run production. Konerko and Bautista each have similar individual stats as well, so that's shows you whose club not only has players that hit for more XBH but also have better situational hitting in run-producing opportunities. When Konerko is in a bit of a slump, the White Sox definitely feel it a lot more than the Blue Jays if the same happens to Bautista

So yeah, I haven't posted much this year because the Orioles have me just a little disappointed again. The worst part is I have a feeling they're going to go on a pretty good run to end the year, probably finishing with about 68 wins. (which would mean going 20-17 from here) They'll think "Hey, maybe now we're on to something!"

Then they'll not spend a lot in the off season and we get another season just like this one!

I wouldn't really say they have similar stats though, Bautista is so far ahead of everyone. 50 points higher OBP, 100 points higher slugging... it's really no comparison. And that's with Konerko having an amazing year.

http://1045theteam.com/curtis-granderson-is-my-american-league-mvp/

I think Curtis Granderson should be the AL MVP.

His stats are off the charts. He's hitting .281 with 35 HRs and 98 RBIs, 24 SBs and 114 runs right now.

Jose Bautista (Toronto): .318, 36 HR, 80 RBI. The MLB HR leader is going to get some votes but I just don't think he's the MVP of the league. The homers are nice but he's 8th in the AL in RBI. While his average is decent, it's not MVP-worthy. Toronto's sub-par record will be the deciding factor if it's close. And the Blue Jays aren't good.

On the topic of MVP, Konerko really only has a chance of the White Sox win the division. Not saying he will win it, but he has a chance.

It's pretty much the same thing for Justin Upton in the NL, though I personally think Upton has NL MVP locked up if the Diamondbacks win their division. He'll end up with(around) .300/.380/.560, ~100 RBI's, ~100 Runs, 30+ HR's. (Currently the NL leader in WAR according to Fangraphs).

Voters seems to like the best player on (division)winning teams when it comes to MVP voting. The only time that isn't the case is when some other player is having a monster year, but is on a bad/average team, in this case, Bautista.

You know, everyone complains that the Tigers would be a .500 team without Verlander, and while that may be true, no one also wonders what the team would be with a semi-decent #5 starter. Here’s the team’s win-loss record for each guy that’s started for Detroit this year.

Justin Verlander: 20-8
Max Scherzer: 17-9
Rick Porcello: 15-9
Brad Penny: 12-13
#5 Starter: 6-19

The Tigers would be 50-50 without Verlander.
The Tigers would also be 64-39 without their #5 starter and 44-31 without both of them.

The records for each #5 starter we've used this year:

Phil Coke: 4-10
Doug Fister: 2-2
Duane Below: 0-2
Charlie Furbush: 0-2
Andy Oliver: 0-2
Jacob Turner: 0-1

Pretty bad, isn't it? The fifth starters for Detroit have almost completely negated any good done by Verlander. Which means the net gain for the Tigers is almost entirely decided by Scherzer/Porcello/Penny. Granted, this is about wins and losses, not pitching performance and none of those guys have been particularly good. But it seems like the team COULD win a 5 or even 7 game series if they avoid the dreaded 5th starter.

Just a fun little observation.
