I always end up picking the Water starters on my first playthrough, not because I like water more, but because I legitimately like the water starters more, not that Mudkip had much competition between a marshmallow peep and a grassy hillbilly. Swamper is, however, only my 4th favorite Water Starter (lowest being Feraligatr, who nobody nominated). It was a ton of fun rolling through Emerald with my starter being immune to electricity for once, but being 4x weak to your rival's starter absolutely sucks. Not to mention that it's design just doesn't live up to Blastoise, Empoleon, or Samurott at all. Another sort of "problem" with it is that I tend to have a problem liking type combos that try to be original, but have already been done before. I'm not a big fan of Quagsire, but Swampert kind of felt like "just another water/ground" type by the time I got around to using it. The fact that it's not just pure water hurts my opinion of it, which I don't like but I can't get past it. I mean, if Quagsire was universally hated and nobody ever used it, Swampert would have one of the coolest typings ever, but as it stands, he came out kind of bland.

Like I said, kind of hard to separate unevolved pokemon from their evolutions in these kinds of rankings for me. Let's face it, Mudkip is the Internet Meme Pokemon. If I had to guess, it's probably the most well known Pokemon on the internet that isn't from RBY. It's cute, likeable, and was funny until he was beaten into our heads by 4chan. I also thought it was odd that Brock caught a Mudkip instead of Ash. I haven't really kept up with things but is Brock even considered a Rock trainer anymore? At this point in the series he literally has 2 Rock Type Pokemon and 7 non-rocks(not even counting Vulpix). Not that this is affecting Mudkip's ranking, it's just weird. I do find it funny that Brock has evolved more Water Starting pokemon than Ash has at this point, but I hope that changes and Ash ends up with a Samurott.

Metagross is awesome because of how chill he is. He is nice enough to evolve before those other jerk pseudolegendaries, because let's face it, if you're not a competitive player, you're not using it anyway, so it's nice to not have to raise something to 55 just to box the damn thing. On the other hand though, Metagross is awesome because of how much of a dick he is. You want to catch one of these things in B/W you gotta earn it. Dat Legendary catch rate makes it more of a pain in the ass to get than half the real legendaries out there and you have to find the shaky grass to get him. On top of that, he evolves really damn quick in Unova. Sure you can try to catch a Metang, but Beldum are MIA. I guess it takes the magic of a Ditto having weird sex with one of these things in a daycare to make them pop out. I never quite understood why they restrict stuff like Beldum to only being able to breed with Ditto. It doesn't make any sense for them to be able to breed at all. Well, whatever, this fatass is a chill dick which apparently makes it better than being a boring ass starter.
I don't recall ever having trouble, but I tried to not transfer much from SS to White because I hate the minigame and I've had a lot of trouble snagging one. I guess I'll just suck it up and transfer.

I was getting bored doing writeups for ones that I feel fairly neutral about, the next 20 or so writeups would have been stupid anyway. At least I can do something with the top 30.
I've always kind of liked Lanturn, because Elec and Water are both in my top 5 types, but it gets negative points because of being another damn fish.
56. Bidoof (SuperWhiscash) Love the Bidoof comics, and I love the derpy faced pokemon. Bidoof is certainly my second favorite "Rattata"
55.Lucario (PrinceKaro) I really liked Lucario at first, then the damn thing had to be in Brawl and be horribad, which made me like it a lot less. Fighting/Steel is also a werid typing for me since I can kind of see it, but it sort of doesn't make sense.
54. Diglett (Bosco) Always liked Diglett and though I was never particularly good at Shoddy Battle, Dugtrio has my favorite moment. I just had a crappy stall Dugtrio that had Toxic/Sub/Protect/Dig. Someone's Azelf got me to 25% I used Dig, Triple Troll Face!
53. Cyndaquil (Highwind89) I was never a huge fan of the second gen starters but they get the job done. Cyndaquil is probably my least favorite of all the fire starters, but it's still probably in my top 60% overall.
52. Vulpix (PrinceKaro) Vulpix is cute, but it never had much going for it. in RBY if I was using a fire type, it was Growlithe and Vulpix became a less attractive option from there. However, I do love Vulpix because I feel like it marked the decline of Brock as a rock trainer. the sheer randomness of him picking up a fire type is hilarious. It would be like if Misty just said "I will raise this Sandshrew!
51. Braviary (swordz9) Braviary is pretty cool overall, but I didn't fall in love with it like everyone else on the board. I'm also not patriotic at all, so that's probably why.
50. Glaceon (GTM) I like all the Eeveelutions except Leafeon, but the gen 4 batch was the weakest IMO. At least it wasn't senselessly retconned into existence like Leafeon, but it was still a pain in the ass to evolve and there was no way I was using it.
49. Sawsbuck (edwardsdv) I like the season mechanic, but I wish it actually meant something. Like Sawsbuck could have been Ice in Winter, Grass in Spring, Fire in Summer and... uh... Pure Normal in Fall. Also, it kind of confuses me when a random pokemon is Normal/Not-flying. It kind of makes me think a few other things could have been normal type if they were introduced in a different gen. Like Rapidash would have been the perfect Fire/Normal pokemon.
48. Glalie (mnkboy) I don't get why so many people hate Glalie, I think it's cool. Just a big CHILL guy who's ICE to have around. Not very SLICK in a competitive scenario, but I like the COOL design.
47. Durant (mnkboy) Damn, did Gen 5 get some awesome new bugs. Durant gets a little overshadowed for not being a new type combo and for not evolving, but as far as future evolutions go, this guy should be top priority.
46. Giratina (htaeD) Not a whole lot of legendaries made this list, but it's the third highest that did make it, though that's not saying a whole lot. Certainly the best of it's trio, and probably my favorite of the DPP legendaries overall, but not nearly as cool as the first two batches of Legendary trios. I kind of felt as though the Origin Forme was a generally pointless addition, but I don't hate it. It does always annoy me that you can't trade it with the Griscious orb attached, so until B/W you couldn't get the Origin Forme in non Platinum games without promos or cheating.
45. Snivy (xx521xx) The Smuggernaut is overall my favorite grass starter, but it's still a grass starter so It's not up too high. I like Snivy, but it's one of the few pokemon that I like a lot better than it's evolutions. I really hope Ash's stays a Snivy and it lets Oshawott take the spotlight, but the anime does have a way of pissing me off, so I doubt that'll happen.
44. Ninetales (SuorGenoffa) A little cooler than Vulpix, but not by much. Again, I was always an Arcanine lover, so I don't think I ever trained a Ninetales. It also annoys me that I spelled NineTAILS wrong for a good 10 years.
43. Flygon (htaeD) If ever there would be a Bug/Dragon that ship has sailed, though that would have been a really unlikely choice to create. I really like Flygon regardless. I love using anything in the game with levitate and Flygon's stats make it even more useful with that ability.
42. Ludicolo (Kirbydamasta) Possibly the most racist pokemon ever, but it always makes me laugh. I loved playing Pokemon XD just for the Miror B. battles.
41.Cacturne (GenesisSaga) Cacturne is probably in my top 5 grass types overall, though that's not saying a whole lot as I'm typically not a fan. I love that the cactus got to be Dark/Grass though, the typing is pretty much perfect. If a pokemon has to have a 4x weakness to something, Bug is probably the best choice (well aside from Poison, but considering that's impossible...) To be honest I like Cacnea a little better, but on a list of all 649, they'd probably be right next to each other.
40. SHINX-CHAN! (xx521xx) Penalized mostly for being NFE, Shinx is really cute and I love me some electric types, but most of what I have to say about it will come later in a Luxray writeup.
