I never really liked Bulbasaur, but then again I never really liked many grass types at all, so giving starters a pass is pretty dumb. It literally never crossed my mind to use Bulbasaur over Squirtle and Charmander unless it was my third playthrough of compatible games. It's design is kind of fun since, to my knowledge, it's not really based off anything which, if we're being honest is rare in a pokemon. Looking back I kind of wish I had said to nominate families or something because I find it really hard to cut my opinion of a pokemon completely away from the rest of it's evolutionary line. That being said, I was quite surprised to see that Ivysaur was more fun to play as in Brawl than Charizard or Squirtle. Bullet seeding and vine whiping are really satisfying while, imo Squirtle and Zard are really bland to play as. Speaking of which, damn do starters suck in the competitive field. Venusaur and Blastoise are UU, Charizard is NU, hell giving a quick glance, only Infernape, Swampert, and Empoleon are OU out of all the starters. Looking at Gen 4's Smogon entries, Venusaur is pretty bland anyway, but you'd think they'd make some of the most iconic pokemon of every gen a little more useable.
Not that I particularly liked the Bulbasaur line anyway, but another thing that made me mad about it is that, if I recall correctly, Bulbasaur was the first pokemon of Ash's that started the trend of straight up not evolving because it "wanted to be itself." Sure, Pikachu did it, but that's different since there are distinct benefits to a stone evolution pokemon not evolving, but Bulbasaur just did it "just cause." At least Squirtle never had the opportunity to evolve (which, what the hell, couldn't make it to 16 despite battling Team Rocket every other day?). Seriously, what do the creators have against Ash having a pimping fully evolved team. At least they kind of got their act together with Torterra and Infernape, but then Gible stayed Gible. But that's beside the point. For the record, I've pretty much entered the "like overall, but can complain about them for kind of stupid crap" territory.

Venusaur got a buff in Gen V. Chlorophyll and Growth's new function in the sun, along with Drought Ninetales gives it more usability.

Blaziken's only UU in Gen 4 because of Infernape, and is currently Uber due to Speed Boost. Sceptile and Blaziken were both OU during 3rd gen as well. Charizard initially suffered from movepool, and I think he might've been OU at some point during Gen 2 thanks to Bellyzard, though I'm not sure. The gen 2 starters have always been s*** though.

Yeah, like I said, I'm basing assumptions off of the Gen 4 Smogon entries, so I may be a bit off in stats and tiers. I also find it a bit hard to consider DW abilities as really existing yet since I don't think you can get most pokemon on it yet. At least not in my experience. Granted I haven't looked into it too deeply, but I'm almost certain starters aren't chilling in there yet.

And just for the record I'm not letting battle stats/tiers affect things negatively since I'm not huge into the competitive scene. It's possible that I may later have things positively affected by them, but let's say, for example that Shedinja were on the list (it's not). I love Shedinja and it would be ranked high, despite being NU.

Whitney's Miltank has probably caused more trainers pain over the years than almost any other.It's an absolute tank in early game, so encountering one in the third gym is almost unfair. Miltank/Tauros also hold a very small spot in my heart for pokemon that I would accept a baby being produced for without thinking it's absolutely stupid, because they need to be linked somehow, similar to what Tyrogue did to Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee. All that aside, I like Miltank enough, but it can't get any higher than this. In all honesty it's probably one of the pokemon on this list I have the absolute least to say about. It has an acceptable design, but it doesn't wow me. I'd never use one because I tend to not use normal types and when I do, there's plenty that are more useful than Miltank.

Fun Fact: Although Delibird is based off a penguin, which typically only appear in the Southern Hemisphere, Santa Calus owns one.

Delibird is a pretty cool pokemon. But one of the biggest problems is that its frozen in NU tier due to lack of any good stats and no evolution. It's got an ice design, and a Win-tier minigame in Pokemon Stadium 2, but Game Freak really gives it the cold shoulder on stats and movepool, so very few people bother training them. I wish I had more to say about it, but it just doesn't kick ice in the same way that things ranked higher do.

Does anyone else imagine that Primeape acts kind of like Seymour from Futurama? I mean, it was probably level 100 about 200 episodes ago, go pick him up, Ash, damn.

Here we have the original monkey pokemon before all this riffraff started clogging up my Pokedex. To be honest, fighting was probably my least favorite type in Gen1. I mean, Psychic was so dominant, so I guess if you really needed to take out a Snorlax or Chansey, a fighting type was viable, but I never found them useful. Admittedly though, had I bothered with a fighting type way back when, Primeape would have been my go to guy. Since the days of R/B Fighting has gotten a big boost, which Primeape has never really gotten to take full advantage of. He's a legitimate enough pokemon, but I've never really had an emotional attachment to it. I guess I'm a lot like Ash after all.

Fighting didn't really have many good moves either. Its "best" were Submission and Seismic Toss (Karate Chop was normal), both teachable via TM, and the latter of which didn't abuse weakness. And of course, submission as an 80% accurate move that does 1/4 recoil damage.... And Primeape didn't learn it (naturally). In fact, Low Kick was the only Fighting move beside Seismic Toss that Primeape learned. Not particularly viable for anything in the RBY days. He at least gets Cross Chop and Close Combat via level up these days, and a fairly decent pool of generic strong physical attacks via TM. Though with his best stats by far being 105 attack and 95 speed....

I'm typically not a big fan of the generic birds of every gen. With how many awesome pokemon are typically in every generation, why would they put one of the best on the first route? The answer is that they typically don't. Unfezant is my third favorite of the five generic birds, but my bottom two didn't make the list. The male Unfezant is so much more marvelous than the female version. In fact, if the male version didn't exist and both looked like the female, No doubt they'd be my least favorite. At the very least though, this is one of the few pokemon that does gender differences right. I hate that there are a ton of pokemon with gender differences, but they're almost all incredibly subtle like the female Venusaur having a visible seed in it's plant where the male doesn't. Not many people would notice that unless they see them right next to each other, so what's that point. I also have to say I'm incredibly disappointed that Ash's Pidove ended up being a female. Maybe the anime writers will make a dumb mistake and give it male features anyway. Or maybe it's a gay male Pidove and that's why the female Snivy's attract didn't work on it. But whatever, I'm getting away from the real topic at hand. In battle, I've only used one long enough to get my Tranquil to evolve, so I'm not sure how good it is, but I'd imagine it's in the same league as Pidgeot or Staraptor anyway with no big surprises differently, so it's the kind of pokemon that doesn't show off, but isn't losing to a Farfetch'd anytime soon.

Teddiursa is cute, no getting around it. I'm sure whoever makes pokemon plushies didn't miss the opportunity to cash in on this opportunity because it has to be one of the best sellers in that department. Unfortunately, like many child actors, by the time it hits 30, it's looks have faded almost entirely and you're left with a somehow boring looking bear with a big target on it's chest. It's almost like Ursaring is taunting you, saying "yup you evolved me, dick. Big ass mistake huh? Why don't you just shoot me in the chest." It's UU as of Gen 4, so I guess it's got some kind of use, but you can do a lot better for a pure normal type pokemon. Rest assured, it I were ranking Teddiursa and Ursaring, Teddy would be a lot higher. Unfortunately, I don't have much else to say about Teddiursa. It's cute, that's about it.

I always felt that Wingull was the "true" generic bird of R/S/E and Taillow was more like the Spearow. Wingull's available before Taillow, and it was a lot more common.

Fun Fact: Stupidly, Ariados (along with Ledian and Banette) can be found in the wild in D/P/Pt, but it's preevolution cannot. This has trended in B/W as well, which I personally don't agree with, but whatever, I don't make the games.

Overall, Ariados has a nice design, and at least it's one of the few bugs which bothered to be original for a while. Sure Joltik is also a spider, but with how many butterflies and moths we have flying around the pokemon world, something as easily redone as a spider staying original for 3 generations is a pretty big accomplishment. It's unfortunate how craptacular bugs in general are, and how bug/poison types make other bugs look like Mewtwo. Seriously, I don't think there's a single Poison/Bug type that's made it out of the NU tier. Beedrill, Venomoth, Ariados, Dustox, all NU, and I'm willing to bet Scolipede follows suit (really, that's it? I could have sworn there were more poison/bug types). Regardless, Ariados is certainly one of the factors that made me want Gold more than Silver upon release. I mean, is there a single person that likes Ledian better than Ariados? I really hope not. Ariados isn't bad, but he's just not good enough to be ranked higher on my list. I like it, but he's probably only around my 10th favorite bug type.
