I think it's generally considered bad form to do it, although "cheating" might be a bit too drastic a thing to call it. I've always done it though!

Eh, you can plan ahead if you know what the person directly ahead of you or behind you has, so it can be useful to know.

No, since they can do it too.

Like, if you got the ghost to steal an item, is it cheating to wait until someone gets something worth stealing?

in a competitive game i'm going to feel silly asking my opponents to go out of their way to avoid looking at half the screen lmao

there are ways to enforce a no-screen-cheating rule on one screen, you just gotta get creative. stick a divider down the middle of the TV or something

Depends entirely on the house rules

I think it's better to just allow it, because it's impossible to prove when it's happening

Screen cheat is a great multiplayer game, by the way

For a serious reply, yeah it's cheating, but nobody really cares. Especially as kids growing up with couch splitscreen, it's just a thing that happens.

I don't think there's any question that it's cheating, since it'd be the equivalent of using hacks today that tell you where players are and so on in online competitive games. The true debate is how much it matters/how much do people care, which is going to differ by game.

I saw some game in the eshop not long ago, that I think was an FPS, but the gimmick was that everyone was invisible, and the entire point of the game was to screenwatch your opponent to figure out where they were. Probably cooler in concept than how it plays out I'm sure.

Calling this cheating is just bizarre to me. Everyone sharing a screen is a part of the game, which means everyone has access to everyone else's information. Mario Kart is not a stealth game. As already mentioned, there's an even an item in some of the games (the ghost) which is entirely based around knowing your opponent's item.

Eh flopping is actually technically cheating but it's enforced rather loosely in basketball at least. Similar to traveling as players travel in basketball all the time but it would slow down the game too much to call every minor infraction.
