I think the game is about Link finally getting some loving from Zelda, and he's going on a quest to get that booty.

I refuse to believe anything else.

Zelda is now the greatest character in the franchise.

I hope Smash 4 uses this Zelda

(well, I've said this thousands of times now, but I really hope smash 4 uses every iteration of Zelda/Link/GDorf as a costume)

Zelda WiiU will probably have to use the UPad. Maybe we'll get WM+ as an option, but the game won't be built around it.

I'm fine with motion controls, but I do hope they use the UPad for regular controls + dualscreen for map/inventory next game.

For the love of god, why is this game doing this

I can already tell that the fundamentals are all there for an incredible experience, but it's pissing all over that by too much hand holding - doing too many things for the player. I was so excited for my first sky dive. I wanted to do it myself. I flew my bird to the jump destination. Closer and closer. I swooped down with great speed. There was a smile on my face; I couldn't help it. Closer and closer still. Gonna jump now. Oh man so awesome. Link the master skydiver. HERE WE GOOOOOO

And then the game takes over and jumps for me in a cutscene. WHY

This game is like an evil hot chick who won't let you cum.

7 hours in; I've done the first dungeon and a good number of sidequests.

The game is great so far except for one thing: the motion controls. They aren't terrible, and they dont make the game unplayable or anything, its just they literally add nothing to the game. The only thing I've seen so far from the motion controls making things needlessly difficult. Flying is kind of a pain with the controls, and that beetle thing is the most annoying item I have ever used in a Zelda game. Pointless gimmicky mini-games that utilize the motion controls are also added (If I have to cross one more tightrope I may chuck my remote at a wall).

Don't get me wrong I love the game, I just feel like it would have been better in every way if they had simply had the player use a GCN controller.

Yeah this has been my feeling as well. If this is the final argument for motion controls, I think I can safely put them in the "no thanks in any situation" category.

Don't think we share similar opinions on Zelda! Need more of a pros and cons sort of thing, the good and the bad.

Pros:
-Feels like the most difficult 3D Zelda by a pretty clear margin. It's refreshing to be in some actual challenging situations, where you don't have three more fairies left over at the end of the boss and dying is a real possibility.

-Atmosphere is good, the art style looks nice, and this is the most fleshed out and interesting the characters have been. A lot of people have mentioned this in our various topics, but this seems like the first time Zelda has been a legitimately good character who is actually likable. She's been mostly a Peach stand in in previous games.

-The dungeons seem better than those of the last two games.

-Some of the boss fights were pretty cool.

Cons

-As we've mentioned, the motion controls aren't great. I don't agree with the reviews that said they made the combat really interesting.

-You get a small number of inventory slots and the rest of the items have to stay in storage. You don't have full access to all your neat gadgets.

-There is a lot of talking. Some of it is character development but a lot of it isn't. There's just far too much text going on, often about gameplay. People have complained that the game "holds your hand" and I don't disagree.

-There's a system where you can track the aura of a person or item and you have to go track sets of things down using that. It plays out pretty similarly to the light bugs from TP, which I was never a fan of.

-Things could've been more streamlined. Some simple actions just take too long to do, and the menu setup is a little weird. This is stuff they've had figured out in past games so it was disappointing for that to be an issue.

I think that's a quick solid list for my thoughts. The motion controls were a pretty big annoyance for me actually, I think they detract from the game at times and you can't really ever get away from them. All in all I thought it was a fun game. I wouldn't be calling it a GotY candidate or anything but I'm glad I played it.

I also thought it was pretty weird that after jumping the game always tells you to use the sailcloth, but if you don't it will automatically use it anyway.

Yeesh. This sounds like trouble.

Edit - The problem with the motion controls seems common, or at least I've heard it with some frequency since people have gotten their hands on the game. I was talking to Kleenex earlier, and he had the same thoughts up to the point where he's at. I was always pretty skeptical of motion controls enhancing the combat -- and having to deal with attacks not registering, or something coming out that you didn't intend to come out highlights the problems I have with using them for a game like this. Sounds like they're neutral at best, annoying at worst.

Neutral at best nothing, the controls are great. The game really couldn't work without them, and I really enjoy them myself. You also shouldn't need to worry about attacks not registering. The thing is, if you don't like motion controls, you don't like motion controls.

(If I have to cross one more tightrope I may chuck my remote at a wall).

Can someone explain how the tightrope thing even worked? I figured slant the wiimote to balance, but it doesnt seem to work. My most successful attempts are randomly shaking the thing and I only occasionally fall.

My big complaint so far with motion controls, i cant for the life of me get a forward stabbing motion to come out with any bit of consistency. And some of the early fights(the damn skulltulas) require quite a bit of precision on the stab to get the hit in without taking one yourself(or it coming out too early and just whiffing).

Also using a shield doesnt feel natural at all.

Just arrived at the Deep Woods. Looks like that's the first dungeon in the distance.

So far it's been great other than the first time you gotta learn to fly. Took awhile to learn how those controls worked.

Combat's awesome. Haven't really had any problems I've read here about not doing the attacks you want and what not. Everything comes out exactly as I intend it to be. I can only guess it has to do with sensor bar positioning!

The difficulty seems fair so far as well. Not too hard, but not too easy either. You gotta time your shield bash's just right or else you're getting hit and you usually lose a full heart too.

its not the heart that hurts, its the shield durability loss.

well I've only taken shield damage once so far the very first time I tried to do the shield bash and missed. I've gotten it to connect every time since them

There's potions to repair shields that also heal some hearts too if it becomes a problem. Seems like those are the one's to go with

Yeah I'm not going too strongly on the motion controls, because I'm probably a biased source. I'm interested in seeing what the consensus is here after everyone has played it.

Can someone explain how the tightrope thing even worked? I figured slant the wiimote to balance, but it doesnt seem to work. My most successful attempts are randomly shaking the thing and I only occasionally fall.

I tilted the controller in the opposite direction of how he was falling, as if I was trying to balance him off. My friend waggled it back and forth randomly. We had about the same success rate.

Yeah that matches my experience. Stabs were sketchy and how the shield works just feels wrong to me while I'm doing it. It didn't feel natural.

I do the tightropes by waving my wiimote in the opposite direction link is leaning, it works pretty well.

also the only time I've used my shield so far is against octoroks and to parry the sword attacks of the first boss and it seemed pretty natural on both of them. you won't lose any durability if you time your parry right, which seems to be only thing the shield is used for so far.

fighting skulltulas before getting the beetle is pretty lame though.

This game is jaggy as hell on my HDTV, and Fi is a million times more annoying then Navi. At least is optional after the Deku Tree outside of the occasional Hey Listen. Fi just interrupts you constantly, even after the game just told you something. And she doesn't have any charm or personality like Midna to make up for all her handholding. And she's gonna be doing it for the next 40 hours

oh yeah that thought passed my mind too. it looks alright on my old fat CRT but I figured it might look iffy on high def displays. I rolled my eyes when the reviews said "it looks okay for a Wii game but that doesn't cut it in the age of PS3/360." but man, to my eyes it looks like a Gamecube game. if it had come out for Gamecube and looked like that I wouldn't have been surprised.

that could be true. mine is right in front of the bottom of the TV, but sitting on my couch the wiimote is naturally about a foot higher than the sensor. it's better than having the sensor on top but maybe that's what causes issues anyway. one other control issue I had was sometimes the aiming controls would invert if I wasn't in a specific zone of space. like if I leaned back and tilted the wiimote slightly up, everything got whacky. I'll bet my setup has something to do with that as well.

I don't think this game even uses the sensor bar for attacking. at least it seems like it's 100% wiimotion+ to me since I can still attack without even aiming my wiimote at the screen.
