Game doesn't use the sensor bar, that's why pointing is all weird.

And regarding the idea that motion controls don't add anything to the game, there are some great boss fights that couldn't be done without directional slashing.

you don't need motion controls to do directional slashing

that being said, I'm probably way behind everyone now after crashing for like 13 hours but thus far I think this is going to challenge MM for my favorite game in the series. the motion controls are a bit wonky and the hand holding is ridiculous, but everything else has been near perfect thus far

Put some power in your stabs, like you are actually stabbing the air. Don't listen to the dumb ingame tutorials. I learned that the hard way by failing the first flying test. You WHIP the wiimote to make your bird flap his wings.

The spiders are easy too! Horizontal slash then stab them. You know you can Z Target right?

You always carry all your gadgets. The other things you carry are just meant to make your way through a dungeon easier. Bomb bag, seed bag, quiver and 2 bottles is more than enough to get you through most dungeons. You have like eight slots to hold optional equipment. Plus you can upgrade your bags and quivers to hold more ammo.

Tightrope tip: move the wiimote left and right like it says at the bottom of the screen, do it even if you aren't about to fall to either side. It helps keep you balanced.

Is it really so bad? She only does it at the beginning of a dungeon/area and then only when you get to your destination. And most of the time it's just stuff that fills in the history of the place and your objective.

I think the worst thing about her is when you dive and she asks you where to land each and every time. EACH AND EVERY TIME. That and when your hearts are low and she makes that beeping sound.

I'm not far yet, but the most annoying thing I've found about Fi is that obnoxious Twilight speech gibberish. It got annoying towards the end of TP, and it's already annoying now. I don't get why they did the same thing again, but it's really lame.

I could never remember which button brought up which menu and early in my playthrough I'd want to bring up a potion or a slingshot and hit down on the dpad instead, bringing out the Navi replacement

you shouldn't have used the pro interface!

I'm a big fan of these controls. You don't have to worry about motions not registering; if Link does something you didn't intend, it's your fault, not the fault of the game. Compare this to Assassin's Creed where Ezio will still jump in directions unintended after four games (at an admittedly smaller rate than when that issue started). I've only finished the the first dungeon, which was relatively straightforward, but it's among the best first dungeons in any Zelda game. I can't remember the last time I felt a sense of accomplishment (maybe LttP when I was 6) upon completing a dungeon, and that's due to the motion controls: each fight is a puzzle, a challenging puzzle, and if you aren't aware at all times, even a simple spider will mess you up. The boss was great, and a far more bearable tutorial than the hours leading up to it. This game is better because of motion controls. Sure, you could map Link's sword swing to the right analogue stick, but that's not as precise, and then you'd have people complain about finicky controls that don't register your motions!

I've never had a problem with motion controls when done properly. I've rarely felt they enhanced my experience, but when they're at their best, they're an unobtrusive control mechanic. I've heard Skyward Sword's described somewhere on this board as 'immersive,' and I'd disagree with that. You're immersed in a game when you're completely absorbed by the happenings and you barely register what you're doing or how long you've been doing it. In SS, you need to be very aware of what you're doing and need to be doing, and if you're not, you'll fail or feel fatigue. Definitely engaging, definitely not immersive.

Some complaints:

- I wish enemies were more aggressive. Maybe this is a complaint I won't see once I finish the 'tutorial' section of the game, but there were times when I was surrounded by multiple enemies, and I didn't have to worry about crowd management because they were kind enough to only send one guy to attack me.

- Fi. Verbose and charmless.

- Tightropes. I can do them well, but I dislike them just as much as I dislike logs in Uncharted 1, and for the same reasons. I can fly through them without problem, they shouldn't be a problem for most people after the first one, and they impede progress. You don't need to slow the game at every opportunity!

- Flying took some time getting used to. It's probably the five years of Wii experience sans WM+, so when I took to the sky for the first time, I was moving and pointing my Wiimote in the direction I wanted and then found myself having a hard time getting centred. I'm not used to simply rotating the Wiimote in my desired direction!

- T...e...x...t s...p...e...e...d. I know I can press A to slightly speed it up, but it's still far too slow.

- The hours before the first dungeon. It's very charming, sure, but moves at a snails pace. After playing FF13, I don't think I can ever critique a game again for opening too slow, but c'mon Nintendo!

To anyone that has finished already, please tell me how often you encounter Skulltulas, and in which dungeons(number of the dungeon, not name, please). I seriously freaked out when I saw one in the TP trailer, but was relieved when I only found them in the Forest Temple and the castle sewers during the main quest. I hope it's similar here.

Later in that very dungeon, you get an item that turns them into a joke anyway, so it doesn't matter much.

The fundamentals in this game are god tier. The gameplay, music, visuals, and charm are simply wonderful. I was surprised to discover how small the first dungeon was when I got the map, but it turned out into maybe the best first dungeon of the series, and I'm not even done with it. Love the beetle and love how every enemy is a mini-puzzle. About to fight the boss now.

Fi is definitely annoying

She ALWAYS says "THERE'S A __% CHANCE THAT BLAHBLAHBLAH", when it's something that's OBVIOUSLY TRUE

Like in one dungeon, you see the boss key chest, and Fi just pops up to say THERE'S AN 85% CHANCE THE BOSS KEY IS IN THAT CHEST!

I KNOW the boss key is in the boss chest, I've been playing Zelda for 20 years! And this is the fourth dungeon even, I've opened up many boss chests already!

So far in NG+, Fi's been just as annoying

the only time I've really noticed a cut in text, is one time in Faron Woods, a Kikwi asked if I had seen him before and I said yes, and he's like "oooh, you're in Hero Mode so I guess you don't need to hear everything again, right?" and it gives me the option to skip the text there

but it's only happened that time so far, I believe. I've been playing NG+ right next to my brother who's playing the game for the first time (we've got two TVs in the room and he brought his Wii over), and most of the text has been the same

First one was the worst first dungeon I've played since Forsaken Fortress in Wind Waker. Linear to a fault, easy as hell, no real twist or memorable theme. Its like "My First Zelda Dungeon" for 8-year olds who have never played LoZ, or video games before.

Really? I thought both the boss and miniboss were awesome - far better than I had expected based on first dungeon standards. The actual puzzles were pretty easy, but it was more than made up by the enemies being puzzles themselves. It took me a while to really figure out battling Skulltulas, and victory was all the more fulfilling because of it. The Beetle is also a great item for a first dungeon. Already digging my little flying buddy.

I didn't get the Piece of Heart in there, though. I assume it can be picked up with Link's current arsenal, but I didn't spend the time to figure out how. Without spoiling the actual solution, can someone tell me if you can indeed get it your first time in the dungeon? thx
