Is it?
You can't use techniques and such developed with Melee in mind, but if Brawl's physics had come first, and people had developed the tourney framework for the series around that, how do you know that people wouldn't say the exact same thing about Melee? Insofar as I can tell, Melee fans chiefly complain about Brawl not fitting their established framework for the series. But what if that framework had been built around Brawl instead? I'm basically saying that a lot of the elements established by the hardcore in Melee were not a result of the game's design but rather the fans adapting that design to their own needs. I see a similar adaptation happening if Brawl comes first. Tripping kinda sucked though. EDIT: Also, I have a question. I would imagine if Melee had never existed, or had at least had physics closer to the other two, you wouldn't have said that. The "by today's standards" there is the damning part. That's why I don't like to compare games, even the similar ones. 64 is still fun to me. Perhaps I had more fun with the others, but it's not suddenly a bad game. I can pick it up and still have a blast.
And no, I'm not saying non-floaty is terrible, but Melee's physics were my least favourite of the three if I was forced to compare them. Melee is a great game. I see it as significantly worse than Brawl but I can still have fun with it. It doesn't stop being a great game because something better exists. -- Something something something ^Poorly disguised anti-caps sig ... Copied to Clipboard!

From: Lightning Strikes | Posted: 1/22/2012 7:50:43 AM | #028 There is absolutely nothing to suggest this. I love Melee's faster-paced gameplay and hate the slower floaty defensive Brawl gameplay. I'm not going to have completely opposite tastes because one came out first. I played 64 before Melee like everyone else in the world. When I played Melee I didn't hate the change, I loved it. Way more action, it's just so much more fun. Quit with this stupid theory that I'm going to love slow floaty and defensive over fast action because one comes first. It's absolutely ludicrous. LMS, the way you're using two games to compare how games should look in two different years is flawed.
- Using one of the best looking games of the year is not you set a benchmark. For example, many other games of 2005 (TP was released in 2006 though btw) probably look much much worse than either Brawl or TP. Maybe it would even be more accurate to say that Twilight Princess looked like a 2008 game! - You're not even considering the consoles. The Wii is not that much more powerful than the Gamecube, so naturally it's not going to look that much better. Again your example includes Twilight Princess, which probably remains one of the better looking games of that entire gen. And Brawl looking that good is a compliment. - Let's not forget the Xbox 360 was released in 2005. This elegantly combines both points before. Why did you not compare Brawl to a 360 game, which for a "2005 game" looks far better than anything the Gamecube or Wii have to offer? -- http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr345/Rakaputra/pjbasis.png SuperNiceDog - 1, pjbasis - 0 ... No hit-stun means you can't pull off any combos, meaning that matches are determined by who has the best character (read: Meta Knight). ^Are you saying that combos are a good thing?
The concept of combos is innately anti-skill based. It means that if you've memorized a simple button combination, you can kick your opponent's ass without him having ANY possibility of stopping it regardless of skill level. That's stupid and uncompetitive. Brawl was a huge improvement over Melee in almost every way; people only hate on it because they expect a Nintendo party game to be Street Fighter. Tripping needs to go though, and the balance could use some work so all the characters are at least usable, though that will always be the case in every game with a ton of characters. -- Signature change in progress... Melee wasn't as good because I actually had to react to the opponent and what they were doing if I wanted a chance at winning.
Brawl fixed that by allowing me to pick Metaknight and mash the B button in the direction of the person I want to hit. And with the zero gravity mechanics I don't even need to aim my attack after they jump because how could I miss with them being stuck in the air for several seconds?
