I figured G1-5's segments would both be very high - it's a pretty long case and only has two - but wow, I didn't expect the whole thing to be second-longest.

so I guess the big question (for line counts) going into the second game is if Ryunosuke can catch Apollo

him not being in case 1 is probably the main thing that will keep it close

This isn't going to be close, there's no way. Ryunosuke is going to be closer to Edgeworth than to Apollo when all is said and done.

Finally started G2 for the first time!
So uh question
In the intro... what is written on the grave? because it kinda feels misleading for people that can't read Japanese.
For the entire intro I thought this is Susato's father grave..and then when the intro ended she was like "Kazuma-sama!" and I was like "oh.."

All of Maya Fey's games, and she's beaten in line count by Ryunosuke after just one game.

Well, this doesn't have Layton/AA included just yet, but yeah, being the protagonist goes a long way! Athena isn't that far behind her with only two games under her belt.

Paratroopa1 posted...
I suspect that GAA's line counts may be a touch inflated just by there being a lot more random interjecting from bit players, especially jury and such. G1-5 is pretty long, but is it really longer than 2-4 and 3-5?

Yeah, I imagine it might get inflated by just how big the cast of the case is. I doubt it will be as long as those two in the time counts.

The big cast was also part of my reluctance to do line counts for Layton/AA, but I'll have to bite the bullet soon and go for it.

Yeah, protagonist gets a lot. Along with spoken words, you also get all their thoughts too.

I'm not exactly sure how incorrect dialogue is handled, because there's a ton more added to GAA than other games. Scuse me, summation examination, and dance of deduction all adds a ton of unique incorrect dialogue.

I am not going out of my way to get wrong answer dialogue since I didn't do that for anything else, but my rule was if I encounter it, I'll count it because this isn't an exact science and it won't throw the numbers off by that much.

I wonder if Susato visiting the grave at the beginning is supposed to mislead the player into thinking it's her father's until she mentions Kazuma at the end

but the fact that her father is alive and well during this case is a big red flag that whatever happened at the end of GAA1 is not all it appears to be

I was sure she was talking to her father that died because of the illness mentioned at the end of the first game..but nope

We have a couple more Dahlia Hawthorne parallels here for Jezaille Brett. First, she's clutching supposedly decisive evidence in her hand that was actually full of poison, and said poison was recently stolen from the university laboratory.

Yeah, I can see why Auchi didn't want to present that second photograph because, as Membami points out, it's highly suspicious to have a photo from behind the victim only moments after she was stabbed in the back. Plus, the lens is cracked.

this isn't quite on the tier of "the victim misspelled Maggey's name with a broken neck" in terms of self-defeating evidence but I wonder if Auchi understood the implications of that picture or not

Menimemo's damage animation reminds me of Luke Atmey's breakdown, and he even repeats his dialogue word for word both times, like Atmey did.

Actually, this guy kind of reminds me of Atmey overall, too, with his rambling pseudo-professionalism.

Hmmm...I guess I kinda get why Menimemo tried to stab Brett to cover the poison's tracks, but I don't know why he thought anyone would suspect him in particular. Nobody even realized he was there! If anything, it would probably mean Soseki got to match Maya's record for number of times as a defendant since it would rule out Rei as a suspect!

I love how everyone bows respectfully to mourn the loss of Auchi's "sprig of hope," including Hosonaga, who randomly reappeared for no reason.

also I don't know if that poem right before he cut it was supposed to be a haiku but if so the last part had one syllable too many

And with that, G2-1 complete! I think the pacing and the mystery itself were better in this intro case as opposed to G1-1, but Menimemo doesn't compare to Brett as a villain.

I love Auchi in G2-1. It's nice to have his serious side in G1-1 and then his joke side in G2-1.

Menimemo...and really G2-1 as a whole kinda reminds me of Wellington and 2-1. It's a simple, but fast case with a culprit with fun animations. I feel like I would have loved Menimemo if I played a few years ago. He's just OK. Great animations though.

I enjoyed many things about 2-1
Susato as a male defense attorney was funny

Questions -
1.Is Rei supposed to be a reference to Maya? her animations look very similar
2.How did he even poison her? It was never mentioned. Poisoned the water when she didn't look?
3.How did she get a hold of his pen?

Also a stupid nitpick-
I didn't like how the judge knew it was Susato all along
Yes I know it's supposed to be a "ha ha he knew" scene and not something very serious
But it still bothers me
Because a judge must follow the law. Even if he thinks said law is stupid. This is the very idea of a judge

I love how everyone bows respectfully to mourn the loss of Auchi's "sprig of hope," including Hosonaga, who randomly reappeared for no reason.

also I don't know if that poem right before he cut it was supposed to be a haiku but if so the last part had one syllable too many

The best part was Kazuma's Nocturne playing. (late-game spoilers) It ruins any tragic elements that theme might have, and just as well, since we later learn there really isn't much to be sad about Kazuma anymore

tbf judges have let things fly in the past before like perceive and the whole mood matrix. Or just simple things like allowing defendants or random witnesses that were previously unaccounted for on the stand after they've barged in uninvited with something to say. Also, not sure if you've finished the game or not.

Exactly. The water was on a table directly in front of the opening Menimemo stuck his camera through, IIRC.

Also something funny about Rei is that she has a damage animation... that she only does after the trial is over. During the trial she never does a damage animation when getting contradicted in court even though you'd think having evidence on you being a murderer would be more shocking.

I only started the second case so no I don't know what happens later

Brett was sitting on a chair directly in front of the opening Menimemo stuck his camera through. All he had to do was empty his pen into her glass while she was holding it. She wouldn't notice if he did it while Rei was confronting her about the missing poison.
So we are to assume he also dropped the pen by mistake and then she picked it up?

Hmmm...I guess I kinda get why Menimemo tried to stab Brett to cover the poison's tracks, but I don't know why he thought anyone would suspect him in particular. Nobody even realized he was there! If anything, it would probably mean Soseki got to match Maya's record for number of times as a defendant since it would rule out Rei as a suspect!

Actually, Menimemo would be the prime suspect since I don't think Soseki was ever alone that day when they were at the lab, since he was with Yujin the whole time. Menimemo would be the only possibility as someone who learned of the poison through the interview, but was later alone with no alibi at the time the poison disappeared.

Pretty much. Granted, this is the one part that seems to be a bit convoluted, but Menimemo empties his pen into Brett's wine glass of water, and drops the pen, likely as a result of him being nervous as fuck knowing he is about to kill someone. None of this is noticed due to the argument over the stolen poison, but as Brett starts dying, she sees the out-of-place fountain pen and realizes exactly what the fuck happened from her own past misdeeds, and picks it up in her last moments to hopefully identify the victim.

I didn't really get "Maya" vibes from her. If anything, it feels like she's meant to be yuri bait for Susato. I can only imagine the amount of fanfiction about the two of them that has arisen and will continue to arise from this case!

He does mention that he did it when he was confronting her in the hut. He doesn't say exactly how he distracted her so she didn't notice what he was doing, but he got so nervous she would catch him that he dropped the pen afterwards, which is how she got a hold of it. I guess he thought it would look suspicious if he knelt down to pick up his pen, or he just didn't realize he had done it until afterwards.

Also, Susato's dad and the judge are long time friends, which they referenced during the case. The judge himself also seems to be really frustrated by how hamstrung their legal system is, which is probably another reason he was willing to let one slide.

Something I find funny about the special poison is that one of the key evidence is how it makes the victim's pupils dilate... yet you never see Brett's eyes in the games. The photograph of Rei pulling out the knife is the one instance where you can see Brett's eyes without her mask or hat covering it and her eyes are closed there.

"By sweet poison did he seeketh to end my life"

one of my writing pet peeves is when stories use Middle English but don't understand the rules of its grammar

the "-eth" or "-th" ending operates basically the same as just the "-s" ending on a verb, so in modern English, that sentence would read "By sweet poison did he seeks to end my life" which is of course totally wrong

this hath been LeonhartFour's English soapbox
