Rude Buster
Love You Love You Love
Invitation Flower ~ Autumn

Brain Power is like, it's interesting for a song with vocals for me, but for an "electric power" type of song it feels pretty plain & weak. Meanwhile Rude Buster is like a top tier song for me so tbh Brain Power didn't really stand much of a chance of getting my vote this time.

the Crysta Kaliedo is a real nice synthy sort of relaxing yet active atmosphere, but I don't care for the singing as usual, gotta dock big points for that. the Love You song isn't relaxing but it also has some real great synth activity, especially the part that picks up at :15, love that part. Of note I originally supported this piece because of how much I loved that part, but later the part that's like, "fake vocal replacement" starting at :44 started to bug me so I was planned to switch my support one night but wanted to wait for the morning for an arbitrary reason, and then that night support started to actually pick up and it got in and I regret nothing. Really I do still really enjoy this song despite that bugging bit.

Rude Buster
Lunar? Crystal Kaleido
IF Autumn

we need more jazz battle themes. like, we got rude buster, the KINGJO, and Trails. And trails is elevator music that doesn't really count.

it takes a galaxy brain to realize why the video has silence for ten seconds at the front of it. Or to like it, I guess.

spectral gene's art always reminds me of stella glow. The music does not. Kind of reminds me of Gypsytronic? Not quite as good as that, mind. Sparkle sparkle, spin and spin, lunar crystal kaleido~

Love you wants me to move at a specific speed but i don't want to move at that speed if it truly loved me it wouldn't be so demanding.

IF Autumn is like my favorite track on one of my favorite VG albums the layering starting like 40 seconds in or whatever is so good sorry whoever you're up against.

six feet thunder is a really good pun.

I give this day a solid Moon/Autumn

Rude Buster
Love You Love You Love You
Six Feet Under

Rude Buster vs Brain Power: Some very energetic tracks here but Brain Power is just too boring compared to Rude Buster. I feel the only good part of Brain Power is the last part where we get the OOOOOOOOO AAAEEEE, while Rude Buster is more consistent with its quality.

Silver Star Crystal Kaleido vs Love You Love You Love You: I like the funky beat that Silver Star has, but thats really the only thing this track has for me. The vocals bring it down a lot for me. Meanwhile on Love You we got a bit of a nightlife vibe going on, which I appreciate a lot more than the vibe Silver Star was going for.

Invitation Flower ~ Autumn vs Six Feet Under: Cool xylophone on Invitation Flower, but its not enough to get my vote. Six Feet Under feels like the gift that keeps giving and is just a solid banger all around. I especially like the last minute of the song at 2:10.

Rude Buster (3rd) vs Brain Power (65th)
Silver Star Crysta Kaleido (114th) vs Love You Love You Love (39th)
Invitation Flower ~ Autumn [36th] vs Six Feet Thunder (5-3) [4th]

EEEEEEEbrbrbrbhbshf i already have a 10/10 song come up and it's against another song i love but not as much aaaaaaaa. deltarune - rude buster is amazing and the first time i heard it i was absolutely blown away which has NOT happened with literally anything else toby fawks has ever done. fm bass sex what the fuck that sexy lead at 0:48 bruhhhhhhh this is soO-oooooooooo AAAAE-A-A-I-A-U- JO-oooooooooooo AAE-O-A-A-U-U-A- E-eee-ee-eee AAAAE-A-E-I-E-A-JO-ooo-oo-oo-oo EEEEO-A-AAA-AAAA I love Techno Trance Essentials - Fab Acapella when it is used in bemani (see aurora, waxing and wanding, second heaven, ignited night/nzm/geki, I THINK I REALIZED WHY I LOVE RYU SO MUCH) and this song utilizes the heavy HEAVY sampling flawlessly with the hilarious choppy stuttering "vocals" god it's so good. but it's against rude buster. rude!!!

Crysta Kaleido is pretty dang cool!! It's got that kind of high energy that I really like but then the vocals are kinda muddled so it's hard to really follow along propeOH SHE SAYS CRYSTA KALEIDO AT 0:47 okay there's something i can actually hear. very cool but just kinda missing something and the mastering is sus soooooo yeah i can't take it against Virt's Absolute Banger here unfortunately. If Hayato Asano did not exist on Earth I would be extremely sad but also Jake Buyman would take his place as my favorite composer when it comes strictly to audio production. Where Asano I like cause everything he makes is overproduced wall of wubs, virt I like cause everything is this absolutely pristine crystaline look-in-the-mirror-and-you-see-the-song instrumentation you can HEAR EVERYTHING SO CLEARLY. LISTEN TO THAT COUNTERMELODY AT 2:21 BRUUUUHHHHH it's barely there but yet you can make it out so clearly when you hear it jessusujs it's good song yes

Invitation Flower back again to destroy my dream again, I see. While I still hold my grudge from six straight rounds of demolishing my hopes and dreams (not my hopes and dreams - undertale) I will admit that I do still really like it lol. Yanagawa plink plink marimba and piano very fun and cool!! the piano ostinato is very cool and then it suddenly gets VERY BIG at 1:11 like hello i am song and i am here. Six Feet Thunder is like a top 50 vgm for me tho lol BIG EDM ELECTRIC ORGAN SCALE BULLSHIT yes fucking please right in the ear doctor. the whole intro and its reprisal are honestly the best parts of the song besides like a few seconds here and there like gwooooOOONWONWOWOWOWO at 2:07 and the whole ending which okay I lied the ending (2:41-end) is the best part its like the "Fin" sign comes up and then JK IT RESOLVES A HALF STEP DOWN AND THE TEXT CHANGES TO "Fin?" probably a kinda cliche ending but its so good. great song

Spectral Gene - Silver Star Crysta Kaleido at 9.2 is my ???th favorite new discovery of the contest! I don't know why you are so good but you are. You shouldn't be. You don't have a lot going on. You have no reason to be so good. Stop being good

Mighty Switch Force! - Love You Love You Love at 7.9 is my ???th smoothest track of the contest! The best it gets for just being nice to listen to without doing anything else to really enthrall me. Swood.

Atelier Ayesha - Invitation Flower ~ Autumn at ??? is my ???th favorite spoiler in the contest! Obviously I Love You Love You but exactly how much I Love will just have to wait for my ranking topic... although it isn't like these scores will end up being consistent...

Crypt of the Necrodancer - Six Feet Thunder at 8.5 is my ???th favorite gameplay discovery song in the contest! Wow az way to make two of my nominations face eachother R1 >(((((. Probably my favorite Danny B CotN song. For whatever reason Amplied takes a few minutes to load, which is fine because this will play the whole time. A great song for a great game.

Rude Buster
Love You Love You Love
Six Feet Thunder

Rude Buster is phenomenal, and it's up against... sigh a rhythm game song? As rhythm game songs go, Brain Power isn't that bad, but that bar is extraordinarily low. Easy match.

Silver Star almost put me to sleep. As someone said above me, the vocals detracted from what could have otherwise been decent. Love You surprised me a bit with how catchy it is -- cool pick, whoever nominated this. It's likely going to get dumpstered by Rude Buster next round, but I dig it and wouldn't mind seeing it again in the future.

Decent Gust vs. Pretty Good DannyB. I like DannyB.

Deltarune - Rude Buster
Spectral Gene - Silver Star Crysta Kaleido
Crypt of the Necrodancer - Six Feet Thunder

Match 1: Rude Buster feels really short compared to a bunch of the other Undertale/Deltarune entries we usually see, but this one is catchy, enough to put it in the better half that have made it in. Brain Power is even shorter. I love the little part during the last 30 seconds, but it's too short to get my vote here.

Match 2: SSCK is pretty cool, and even managed to reach into my considerations for support! It's smooth, but at the same time energetic, I like this. Lots of cool effects on the vocals too. LYLYL is pretty good, but it doesn't stand out as much to me. It sounds a lot like Sonic music.

ToC: 9 times out of 10, I'll take Atelier music over whatever Danny B has to offer, but Six Feet Thunder is actually really great and maybe my favorite thing he's done. Cool electronic Castlevania thing going on here. IF~A is okay, but the two Ayesha tracks in this year's contest are a lot better.

Deltarune - Rude Buster
Mighty Switch Force! - Love You Love You Love
Atelier Ayesha - Invitation Flower ~ Autumn

MATCH 1

Rude Buster probably would rank among my top Deltarune songs alongside Field of Hopes and Dreams. I definitely like Rude Buster a lot more than Undertale's battle theme. This song's very bouncy and upbeat and I like that quite a bit in this song. The flurry of piano chords in the intro is really good at drawing me into the song and the song has a nice, solid melody on top of that.

Brain Power, for a quasi-meme song, is actually pretty enjoyable too! Ultimately, I would say that it doesn't do enough to distinguish itself as a great song, but it's still a perfectly fine song. Thank you Ermine for posting the Brain Power copypasta so that I don't have to feel like I need to randomly tack it at the end of my writeup for this song lol.

MATCH 2

Every time I see the name "Idea Factory," I remember that they did more than just the Neptunia games. Crysta Kaleido feels very folky, but it's not the kind of folk-sounding song I'm looking for from that style of music. It just feels like it kind of falls flat, melodically. To draw a comparison to another song in the bracket, I'd say something more like Fire Island Volcano with its fiddles is what I'd want out of this song. Not really a fan of that winding up sound starting at 2:10 either.

Love You Love You Love is a really nice song from the Mighty Switch Force series! I don't know the whole soundtrack off the top of my head, but I'd say this or Whoa I'm in Space Cuba is my favorite song from the game. This song's really happy and upbeat which is something I like about this song. Might get a little too busy sound-wise at times, but it's not too big a deal here. I still think it's a pretty good song either way. I like this style of Jake Kaufman's music that you see in Mighty Switch Force and Shantae as well quite a bit!

MATCH 3

Honestly, I think Yesterday's Opponents has grown on me enough for me to like it a little more than Invitation Flower ~ Autumn with regards to the Ayesha retirees from last year, but IF Autumn is still a great song! It's one of those songs that I'd say sounds like nature, which I suppose is another archetype of music tastes that I have, albeit sort of ill-defined. Bright, cheery, Atelier tune. Can't go wrong with that!

Six Feet Thunder is probably better than most Crypt of the Necrodancer songs I've heard, but it still feels a bit plain for a take on baroque-style organ music. I think it actually gets better when that organ-like synth isn't prominently at the forefront, particularly at parts like 0:43-0:58. "Plain" probably isn't the best word of choice since this is definitely an above-average song, I guess I just mean to say that it could be done better.

Silver Star Crysta Kaleido
Six Feet Thunder

Don't quite get the Rude Buster love alas. It's not bad or anything, but there's a bunch of Undertale songs I like better, and I'm not even that big a fan of Undertale's soundtrack. Brain Power is powerful and great.

I like Kaleido more when it's not the chorus. I like Love You for the first seven seconds before it starts repeating itself over and over.

Just played Ayesha for the first time a couple months ago. Autumn's a pretty good world map theme! SFT is great the whole way through except that dumb ending. I wish I'd gotten into CotN later so that I was still good when Amplitude came out...

Rude Buster
Silver Star Crysta Kaleido
Invitation Flower ~ Autumn

Rude Buster is my 35th favorite in the contest! my reaction to toby fox is pretty all over the place depending on the song, and this contest explores some of my least favorite examples of his work but this is absolutely NOT one of those. I LOVE this, I liked Deltarune as a game (and soundtrack) consistently significantly significantly more than Undertale. There's lots and lots of reasons I could list for that, but one of them was definitely that this was just the normal battle theme. I was always /excited/ to enter a normal battle rather than dreading one, no matter what it was, because I knew this song that I love was going to play. My favorite song in the game and probably top 3-5 toby fox songs overall for me. As a song lots of my interest is simply instrumentation and it's alignment with lots of other existing music I like that isn't it that i like more than it...stuff like the side of Yasui I actually like, stuff like ubiktune/soundshock/etc fm funk adjacent stuff. It's just...really on the nose at being the general zone of a very specific style i'm fond of that's not necesarily easy to find. but beyond the style it is, I can point to specific elements I'm fond of, the FM lead & bass, the really dense 7ths+ chords backing it and unusually clustered harmonies with lots of close together notes crunchily making for a full dense sound. Also I will say this is one of the few songs I can think of where I specifically like the dip into the majV to end the phrase at :34/:40, I really often HATE when music goes in that exact direction just because something about it's really cheesy in an uncomfortable way to me but herE? I LOVE it here. It's effectively dramatic and exciting! its probably just because the chord progression and individual chords of everything are complex&busy enough for it to not feel like i was patronizingly guided to them, and instead just let me feel the drama and tension/release that stuff provides and decide its a satisfying climax on my own. Cool piece of music that represents lots of stuff I feel positive about, adjacent to many things I'm more mixed/negative about but does everything possible to make me love it in this instance instead!

Brain Power is my 165th favorite in the contest! honestly have a hard time coming up with stuff to say about this one beyond "it's fun" and it is! I have fun listening to it and following along with the visual. Musically though there's very little in it for me and in the end my interest is pretty shallow. All the O-o-o-o-o-ooo-OOEEoleallg_---a- dfignh345w345j stuff is my favorite part probably? I've always had a thing for cchopped up vocals that sound like tarzan banging on his chest so hard while he is yelling that it sounds like a computer voice instead. I was always into the english dub Pokemon Season 6 Itnro because of the H-e-e-r-r--o-o-o-o-o autotune eiffel 65 part like I was OBSESSED with that (I still am) and this reminds me a lot of that. Overall it's well produced for sure which i value and the fullness and consistent surprise of things like big thick synth chords that cut off immediately and STUFF like that's cool. Feels like everything's really carefully placed like little puzzle pieces together with tiny de\tails to make it come together like a MUSIC. WOW Music has things in it! What the heck! I think I HATE THIS SONG ITS TOO FUN (this song is fun !!!! yay!)

little really stands a chance against rude buster for me obviously, brain power is like exactly 6.0 for me and it's like doing the bare minimum possible to get me to say i enjoyed the experience of it and that's it. REALLY cool visual though I like strobes and seeing every little thing pointed out

||

Silver Star Crysta Kaleido is my 90th favorite in the contest! Its kinda the stereotype of "board 8 music" in my mind because it has girls singing on top of "world music" and is also electronic at the same time. That exact mix is a category I consistently like maybe more than any other these days even if i didn't used to say that, so this is not even close to a complaint! This is brought up above a few similar tracks in the contest for me mostly because of the chords. The piano & string chords are nice and full and they remind me of like the crystal world where someone has butterfly wings "gene" and THEY ARE SO PRETTY CHORDS. just love this instrumentation a ton. like basically every single instrument is one where I hear it and think "that is the timbre that I want to hear with my ears", and they're all used in such a nice way too. I love the breakbeats when they show up because something about them is really "intense" to my body and feels like someone is punching me even though it's actually kind of soft in its presence in the song? Something about the emptiness of the sections that have the breakbeat stuff makes those moments powerful to me somehow, especially with all the playing with filter effects during them. My actual favorite sound in the song though is probably the synthetic bagpipe-esque lead, but much of that's purely how it's used more than the sound itself. All these little quick trills and flourishes in its melodic content work so well for me on that sound in specific. I love this more than this writeup/score makes it look like I do and keep thinking I forgot to say something important to me about it, but I think I caught most of the biggest elements

Love You Love You Love is my 123rd favorite in the contest! honestly my interest here's kinda similar to my interest in the previous track even though the aesthetic is almost the opposite. Jake Kaufman is one of the composers out there who's the most obsessed with Big Dense Full FEeling harmonies which is even is how he self-described himself on his own old website basically, and it's an accurate description! there's not a moment of this where there's not some really thick chord pouring chillness into my soul no matter what's going on. compared to other jake stuff frustratingly though like, the only reason this is "low" (123rd place isn't "low" in a field this strong for me though) is just...honestly generic stuff anyone could say like "it's not really memorable" "other songs in the ost are more catchy", etc, I'd definitely place other stuff from this much higher. Maybe it's just that some parts of this are "too plainly happy" for me, idk. There's soime REALLY GOOD MOMENTS THOUGH like the chord changes from 1:42 - 2:07 hit me in this amazing way that "tee lopes new originally composed sonic mania songs" do...I mean i guess that's just part of the whole "jake kaufman sound" ....! Cool chords, chord changes, sounds/effects, and fun funky stuff going on through the whole thing. !

Both are "7.x" bu

Six Feet Thunder (3/10) this is like everything I dislike about dannyb at once. I don't like being negative so i'm not going to spend a lot of time trashing this too much but basically yeah "halloween edm" is one of the types of music that makes me cringe the most often and this is one of my least favorite examples of that I even know of, but at least it's the kind of music the kind of people who have an Invader Zim backpack in 2003 would listen to (this is a compliment) so it's not getting any lower than a 3 because I like DARK things and i'm not going to deny that this is dark. I've been trying to figure out why I dislike stuff similar to this so much for years now and never quite pinpointed it. My current leaning is it's just because it feels "dishonest" to me, i don't WANT to feel that about it, but i can't shake it from my head that the music is LYING TO ME, it's trying to tell me that this is a spooky castle but instead it's too cheesy because it's really fake rich people classical music that someone thinks they're a genius for knowing what it is because they can pretend to conduct to it while listening to it on ear buds in the library so then it is a colorful stupid carnival instead of cool dark haunted house. I want music to be dark and I think that's why it feels extra-wrong to me to the point of active dislike when it's dark in a way I can no longer take seriously, it's close to being a direction i'd love to listen to but i actually dislike it, and that uncanny mismatch makes the initial dislike jump to outright hate. ok i lied when i said i wouldn't be negative. i hate this song, least favorite in toc and between both contests combined it's at least bottom 2 unless i'm forgetting vgmc9-13 retired tracks i like even less. at least the productions a bit nicer than most dannyb stuff so i'm not going to complain about it sounding like "newgrounds flash game" because it actually doesn't this time. I wouldn't hate this composition as much as i do if it were on different instrumentation, and I'd like this instrumentation all right if it was different music it was playing, but in combination it's definitely one of my least favorite musical aesthetics even if i can never rank something like this lower than 3 anymore because i like dark things such as "Halloween" and at least this evokes that and that is cool. Other things go for the exact same vibe in a way i like much more, going to listen to spooky Super Paper Mario songs RIGHT NOW to clear my mind of this sorry I said i wasn't going to be negative but then i was and this writeup's longer than all the other ones. I guess was DISHONEST just like how this song feels to me!

umm, yeah, easy match. ha ha.

Rude Buster

Man, it's hard to succinctly describe why I love Rude Buster so much. It's a dance tune. Let's start with that. The song starts off with these cool calm chords sound design wise. Later on, a grittier lead enters. An FM bass ties the whole song together. The chords + bass share the same motif, but when the grittier lead enters; the bass drops into the background and starts doing a solo as the lead 'improvises' over it [it's not actually improvising but it becomes 'looser']. Best mental image I have for this is a situation falling out of control. Mixing with the in game scenario it plays in [combat], it creates a feeling of danger. It's fun danger, though. The bass and the chords tie together to create this incredibly dynamic atmosphere that feels playful - at least at the beginning. When the gritty lead enters, I like to imagine it takes a turn for the worse. I guess it starts major and ends minor - I tend not to think in terminology. At the end of the song though, the bass comes back in; so the tables clearly turn. What else... the song shares a name with an ability Susie has in game - Rude Buster. Not sure which came first. As Tox said, the song very much feels like Yousuke Yasui - I want to back that up by saying it especially feels like Custom Robo V2 - some songs from that OST share a lot of elements with this one - mainly the THICK COOL CHORDS and gritty lead.

Brain Power

This feels like if a robot dressed up in a clown costume and started malfunctioning. Half the song just feels incredibly empty to me. The drop is pretty good, yeah - but so much could be done with the stuff up to that point. It's disappointing. Things I do like about it: Gated vocals, that's something I value a lot in music. Also, it feels really well balanced sound wise. Everything has its own place. My mental image for this is undoing like a million locks on the safe that is your mind and then delicious rainbow goop spurts out of the mindhole rather tamely. I want rainbow goop to be coming out constantly, and even more when it drops. This just isn't satisfying enough to me.

NOW THIS IS RAINBOW GOOP. This song does a lot of things I love really well... my mental image of this song is like. BIOTECH. that's the best mental image i have. lots of squelchy fluid percussion. using bagpipes for the lead was an amazing choice it sounds so faded out and nostalgic. I love that when the beats become all compressed, the vocals become compressed too! And, there's this pad that goes all throughout the song and it stops just for that compressed section and it sends chills down my spine. It feels like the subject of the song becomes 'trapped' halfway through. Outside of the 'trap', though it feels like this MASSIVE COLD ROOM that feels like FAKE NATURE [read: electronics and mechanisms and ROBOTS trying to act like nature]... and after the 'trapped' section, compressed percussion starts being used a lot more. The trap affected them in some way - it changed them, either through personal development; or through FORCEFUL BIOMODIFICATION. btw i've said this is a 12 for me before that is no longer true it's more like an 11.4 lol [which is still better than like 99% of vgm in my eyes]. i was extremely starstruck but listening through a few more times the reverb on the vocals and the squelchiness at times of the percussion takes things away for me rather than adding to the song. also this song quotes csikos post which is one of my favorite classical pieces

Love You Love You Love

fashion show music for gamer teens who have anorexia. it sounds like HUMAN AFTER ALL DAFT PUNK which is good i like human after all daft punk. weirdly enough i think i'd like this song concept better if it wasn't composed by kaufman lol. like. same sound design but non 'virt' composition. i want this to compositionally sound like plok beach is what i'm saying. this is extremely cathode 2-3 years ago but i've grown a lot in my music taste since then. if the whole song was variations on 0:16 to 0:20 with cool arps i would like it more. i'm avoiding describing the song lol 'fashion show, gamer' pretty much sums up what i think of this song. the bass isn't colorful enough - the song doesn't move how i want it to it feels too rigid. dubstep for soldiers. very 80s funky. now give me mordecai and rigby 8bit land topdown 4 next vgmc so i can expect it to crush the block then have all my undertale - hopes and dreams dashed.

why is the first thing i think of when it comes to this song rain. It's the ghostly pads in the background and then the constant ostinato MALLETS. but it keeps going in this oriental ninja samurai sakura trees ukiyoe face direction [woah cool flute, BRASS SECTION] for some reason which i don't mind but it's kind of subverting my expectations. i have never played an atelier game in my life [that reminds me nfun i have still not played trails] my favorite song from atelier ayesha is still wish for treasure. i like the cool SWEEP that happens at the beginning that's fun.

Six Feet Thunder

i like dannyb.... he has a really unique sound that i don't really hear elsewhere in vgm of like 'HORROR THIS PERSON IS PLAYING AN ACTUAL ORGAN' and that appeals to me. he would do good on a horror game soundtrack idk why we haven't seen him on one yet i want to see dannyb soundtrack the next splatterhouse game that said six feet thunder isn't particularly a song i care for much. sound design wise there's COOL BUZZING underneath the song that reminds me of ELECTRICAL CURRENTS. a big reason i love dannyb isn't actually because of his composition but it's because he does reverb in a way that i think was probably majorly influential to me when i was listening to him growin up. it feels MASSIVE, like A WHOLE WORLD and that's something that not only shows through in my taste but how i analyse songs and that comes back through to my taste and how i might perceive certain tracks as well. what i'm saying is super meat boy - hot damned was probably a massive marker point in my musical taste and if i didn't listen to baranowsky when i was a young teen then the impact on my taste would be massive, much more than if i didn't listen to any other musician
