I loved Episode IX, but I totally understand why people hated it.
I would have loved to see more substance in the last space battle, but it was a teary eyed moment when the fleet showed up.

That said, I thought kylo was gonna bring the first order fleet to help the rebels tbqh.

OK so it was just that the first chunk of the movie is Abrams imaginary episode 8 and the rest is exclisively jacking off OT fans and doesn't stand on its own at all. IHO.

These are both things I have already heard. I mean that's still a movie technically....

Also, I hadn't worked on my Darths and Droids bingo card yet (https://www.darthsanddroids.net/bingo/Episode9/), someone help me.

I don't remember if any scene is a "clear visual echo of Episode VI". I mean, there were a lot of scenes on the second Death Star, but I'm not sure if that counts as a "visual echo". I don't know if I'm missing anything else.

I wasn't sure if the Star Destroyer scenes counted because I couldn't tell if they were supposed to be in space or in the upper atmosphere like in Rogue One.

Also, the Wedge box always seems to trip people up. It's based on a joke from the comic. It's not if Wedge himself appears, but a shapeshifter.

This movie would've been better off if Snoke was still the big bad and awakened the spirit of Palpatine. And if the Knights of Ren did anything. I was expecting atleast a good fight between Ben and his former knights but it wasn't enough for me.

Rey should've fought them instead. She didn't have to fight Palpatine. Dude just force lightninig blasts people and doesn't have any other fighting abilities at his final stage. He can raise ten thousand star destroyers up though and manage to not destroy any ships in the final battle. I'm pretty sure they were just all floating in space from that attack. Put him in a Storm Trooper suit that's glow in the dark to sell toys. Palpatine is a bad GLaDOS.

Saw it tonight. Some pretty great stuff. Not as good as Force Awakens but they really kinda wrapped everything up nicely.

When Lando first showed up, before he revealed his face, I turned to my friend and whispered "That's totally Lando."

Hux being the mole took me by surprise and actually I don't really think it was ever explained why he "needed Kylo Ren to lose."

This is one thing that people have been bothered by that I wasn't

It makes complete sense to me that Hux is such a miserable, petty motherfucker that he would try to sabotage the whole operation just because he was being pissy at Kylo for taking over

I think they didn't do anything more than that brief betrayal with Hux because he's so thoroughly irredeemable - I think his being the spy was incapable of playing a larger role in the movie because he absolutely cannot and must not have a heroic moment because he's completely unforgivable. But as far as dumb plot conveniences go in this movie, and there were a lot of them, Hux betraying Kylo Ren in this one scene to let the heroes get by made perfect sense. It gave him something to do and there really wasn't anything more they could do.

They were in a tight corner with Hux. They couldn't have him be the main bad guy because he's too lame. They couldn't write him out of the movie because then people would be like, where's Hux??? And they couldn't have him do more because there was too much happening in this film to begin with. So this is what we got.

Oh I agree. This was like, Attack of the Clones-level delivery and it was kinda worth a chuckle.

As for his death, months ago I made a list of life/death predictions that turned out to be fairly accurate and I predicted that Hux would be "killed off unceremoniously."

Idk I think you can reason out based on huxs past experiences with Kylo Ren that he 100% is extremely bitter towards him.

Also, I think it's reasonable to think that he was the spy like as soon as you see him in the war room scene.

TLJ took risks and burned the trilogy to the ground. Congrats! Difference between thinking outside the box and burning shit to the ground. Nobody in the executive team should have allowed anything like the "Holdo Maneuver" to ever even come into a Star Wars film. It was preposterous.

And, that's just one example.

Only in so far as having to follow a similar plot structure due to being Act 2 of the trilogy. Though TBH I never really understood why the sequel trilogy gets so much criticism for being the "same" as the original trilogy - to me that's like saying Con Air is the same movie as Die Hard. There are just a lot of similar occurrences, which may be deliberate to sell the concept of a generational saga. When you think about it, the prequels were no different.

That being said, I may just not have the original trilogy's plot ingrained enough into my mind to pick up on this. The Last Jedi was the one of the new trilogy where I did pick up on considerable similarities to the OT and I had just watched that.

A nice idea that ultimately meant nothing, just like the reveal of Rey's ancestry. This movie seems like it was specifically made to be as inconsequential as possible so as to piss off the fewest people possible, which is disappointing.

Holdo Maneuver absolutely makes sense. Accelerating an object to super high speeds and smashing it into something else gave the exact result one might expect. It's very straightforward. The issue is that it's overpowered and the nerf it got in Ep9 comes off as a flimsy excuse.

It doesn't make sense because

  1. Lightspeed travel probably shouldn't work whatsoever if the object is still tangible while doing it. It has to work in some other sort of way otherwise all the hyperspeed in Star Wars is weird in that you're basically inviting all sorts of assorted catastrophes when you use it, every time.
  2. Assuming it does work, The Holdo Maneuver should be the basis of all space warfare-- star destroyers are no longer viable weapons because you can just have droids man smaller ships to ram into them to destroy them in one shot with minimal casualties.
Like it's less "ramming into something really fast doing damage doesn't make sense" and more "if hyperspeed is just traveling really fast and allows ramming things it breaks a lot of the lore in Star Wars"

I'm pretty sure star wars has introduced the concept of space lanes, which are pre-determined acceptable courses from which a ship can perform lightspeed travel, specifically to avoid any sort of mid-flight collisions. So you can really only use the holdo at very short distances, otherwise there's a good chance you bonk into some random asteroid or another passerby ship, especially in a dense dogfight.

Assuming these Star Destroyers with planet-busting weapons were as big as the biggest Imperial Star Destroyers:

Imperial I-class Star Destroyers had over 37,000 crew on board 9,235 officers and 27,850 enlisted personnel. The complement of 9,700 stormtroopersadded to a total of 46,785 crew and passengers.[1]With the bridge being located in the upper half of the ship, the officer's quarters were located right below it.[14]
