I just saw this video on YouTube --

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ryO-zX9WsIA -- that was talking about bad endings to games, and then it does the usual YouTube thing at the end where it invites you to mention in the comments section if they missed anything, and I stopped and thought and realized, "Man, I've played a lot of really bad games, haven't I?"

But I'm curious what terds B8 can drag out. Deploy those spoiler tags~

I'll start you off with one I actually don't hate, but I know a bunch of people who played the game loathed. In Firewatch, an indie game on Steam, you play as a dude who runs away from his responsibility as a custodian for his wife with early-onset dementia and takes a job one summer working for the parks department in Wyoming watching for fires. Your only companion is a lady on the other end of a two-way, and the dialogue between the two of you is (IMO) the selling point of the game.

Then stuff starts to get weird, as you deal with some missing teens that you saw last and could be blamed for, supplies disappearing, strange figures in the darkness, and then what appears to be people F'ing with you as part of a psychological experiment or blackmailing you or oh god I don't know wtf is going on somebody save us.

And then the girls turn up peaceably. The research equipment you find in the "top-secret facility" is just there to monitor elk movement. All the other weird crap is the result of some father who brought his son with him to do your job a previous year until the boy fell down a hole and the father exiled himself from society in shame -- and was trying to keep you from discovering the truth. And when you're forced to evacuate because of a huge forest blaze, Radio Chick runs away before having the chance to meet you, and you go back to your life as it was beforehand. So basically, nothing was all that outlandish and everything in the end was heavily anti-climactic.

Of course, that was actually the point, so this probably doesn't really qualify as a bad game ending, but it was the first thing I thought of! I'll do better in the morning, kay?

Which one? The latest one that had that DLC ending added on that basically nullified everything? At least I think that was how it went?

As for question...I'd mention Dragon Age 2. Not that I have as much a beef with it as most people (I thought the game was fine for the most part), moreso that just the entire end conflict / finale felt stupid no matter what you did so they basically completely fuck up Anders from Awakening and he causes bullshit even if you do his whole personal questline (which makes it even worse). So once all hell breaks loose the big conflict of Mages VS Templars fully breaks out and you have to choose a side. Problem is, both sides are fucking terrible

The whole game shows that both sides are shit between the mage murderers and the Templars being fucking crazy (particularly their leader). So yeah say you are all pro mage and the mage faction leader is constantly spouting how they are innocent and all that jazz. So ya help them and hold off the templar forces with your badass crew and what does he do?

"OH BETTER WHIP OUT THAT BLOOD MAGIC AND TURN ME AND ALL MY MAGE PALS INTO HORRIBLE ABOMINATIONS!"

Fine, mages fuck up? You decide to side with the Templars? All's well and good and then their leader decides to kill you and your pals because REASONS (even if you side with her the whole time) so ultimately you end up fighting both anyway. Then Hawke just kinda fucks off (till Inquisition anyway).

I mean I get some of the other plot stuff messing with things (like that crystal or whatever from the first act), but that whole finale scenario and Anders shenanigans just annoyed me.

Not really just the ending itself, but mostly the game is bad, then the ending is a letdown, THEN the characters keep lecturing you over the credits when I just wanted to be happy I could stop playing the game.

As far as actually bad endings go though

Fallout 4

After spending the entire game building up to what is supposed to be the absolutely vital decision when you have to choose which faction to side with, it turns out that 3 out of the 4 get you literally the exact same ending (which is just destroying the fourth faction). It ends up affecting who's in the final mission and nothing else, and the decision has pretty much no effect on the post-game world.

And the 4th is really only slightly different, with the only major change being that that faction isn't destroyed.

After the great endings and variety from Fallout 3 and New Vegas this was just a massive disappointment

The first Assassin's Creed comes to mind. It just stops and expects you to buy the sequel.

MGS4 largely for the way it is delivered. 75 minutes of nonsense, with this nonsense invalidating huge parts of the series' lore. Then it cops out massively. There was a cut that reduced this whole thing to about 5 minutes (including removing the cop out) and it was actually pretty good.

Also the ending itself was alright, but I am tempted to say the new Wolfenstein purely for the credits song.

In other videos that people make YouTube videos of with like ScrewAttacks "top 10 worst endings" or whatever anyone with a brain saw them coming...oh forget it.

In a random wikipedia article of the game, they usually list the ending of the game that can be read, that is barely a paragraph long.

Spoiler-tags would be appreciated in a topic comparing endings across an industry because we don't know what games will be mentioned or cared about by other people. Please don't assume that for other people.

They're barely any work to add spoiler-tags anyway.

PS2 is a hard slog of a game that isn't very good. Honestly the entire Phantasy Star series is garbage until IV. (The first game is absolute trash on every level and I couldn't make myself finish it. My brother dragged his way to the end and will never touch the game again.)

Oh and another thing the game does:

The game also kills off a character mid-game and uses a bull**** excuse to prevent her revival given you've probably revived her the exact same way earlier in the game. It just says "nope, this won't work because of a reason that never stopped it from working before".

Metal Gear Solid 2, hands down by far. I have never been more pissed by the ending of a game. It's so fucking idiotic and plot twists to have plot twists regardless of how dumb it is. It is fucking insane how you fight the former president who is now an octopus on this huge fucking thing plowing through new york, you kill him, then you're in the crowd like talking about it among a whole bunch of shocked people who don't seem to give a shit you murdered the former president, are in full sneaking gear, and are talking like a psycho.

To this day I think people claiming MGS2 has a good story is some huge inside joke.

I honestly feel like still hating it to that extent post-EC is just stubbornness.

I'm not saying you need to do a 180 on it and start loving it, and you can never forget that first wave of crushing disappointment, but still ranking it as "The Worst Ending Of All Time" when including the EC in the discussion starts to feel a little childish imo. I understand putting it in that echelon if you take the EC out of it, sure.

Similarly, ME3 is my favourite game of the series only when all DLC (for all the games) is included. But to me that's not a caveat, that's how you should consider it. Saying "vanilla ME2 is better than vanilla ME3" would be adding caveats. Complete picture > incomplete picture.

I didn't think Phantasy Star 2's ending was that terrible. It was actually a pretty interesting twist. Who's responsible for all the crap that has befallen your three worlds? The humans of Earth.

Yeah, the overall story for PS2 was nothing all that exciting, but then again, when has Phantasy Star ever done that much with their story, outside of 4? I mean, geez, look at PSO.

Okay, so how's this for an answer? Oblivion.

Not that I was enamored with the story up to that point, but in the final mission, the entire goal is to get Martin Septim, newly crowned emperor, to the temple of the one. Doing so will prevent Bad Things from happening. So literally all you do is escort Martin past some demons, and then he morphs into a dragon and saves the day. Granted, that's kind of cool in a way, but it might be nice if your actions meant something, or that anyone noticed you were involved or anything. After you reach the ending, it's just, huh, we've got a new statue. Okay, let's go about our lives now.
