Hybrid Theory was my first album ever that was mine alone and both it and Meteora will hold special places in my heart

Same. I definitely didn't listen to their albums after meteora nearly as much but both of those albums saw a ton of play.

This is heartbreaking.

I'll just post here what I posted on my facebook

In 2004, I was lucky enough to be one of the fans to meet and talk to Chester Bennington backstage at a Projekt Revolution concert. He didn't know my name, but he never forgot me. In the following 7 concerts I attended, always on the front row in the pit, he acknowledged me. Whether it was a finger point and head nod, a "glad you made it this year", or him handing me a guitar pick, he always remembered the fans he met. The news today is devastating. As a kid growing up with depression, I turned to Linkin Park to escape from it all. I grew out of the disease but never grew out of my admiration for him. He forever changed countless lives around the world, including mine. I just ask that everyone focus on these kind of stories instead of what he struggled with. He already wrote his swan song, listen to the lyrics and know how many people are alive or sane because of him.
"When my time comes
Forget the wrong that I've done
Help me leave behind some reasons to be missed
And don't resent me
And when you're feeling empty
Keep me in your memory
Leave out all the rest"

My heart is so heavy.

I read a post that pointed something out about nu metal and grunge in particular that goes with what you're saying, Commodore.

Namely that it may seem like angsty nonsense to people on the outside, but a lot of these songs are written by people who have or had real issues, and these songs actually helped people who had their own issues deal with them.

...Didn't help that people decided to mock people with real issues by calling them "emo" and stuff.

It baffles me that people don't understand this shit was real all along. LP was never about being angsty, emo, cheesy, whatever. It was literally a beacon of hope for people who felt the same way. They got popular because they made some catchy songs, but it was always a real thing for people dealing with similar struggles.

Weird anecdote: I used to play a demo of Earthworm Jim on PC that didn't have the music, so being really into LP at the time like I was I'd blare Hybrid Theory under it. The two have been permanently linked in my mind ever since.

On a more serious note, I was one of those teens with depression who didn't understand what it was I was dealing with, but I knew Hybrid Theory and Meteora helped me deal with it in ways I didn't wholly appreciate at the time. This one hurts.

Truth.

In 2002, I was a morbidly depressed college junior who was flunking out of school because i didn't give a shit about anything, and literally spent 14 hours a day crying to myself in bed and the other 10 playing EverQuest because it was the only place where I felt like there were people who gave a damn about me. I knew quite a few other EQ'ers like that, and we often bonded over Linkin Park lyrics.

Gonna be honest I had the urge and I actually will admit to still liking Linkin Park (well, their older stuff-- haven't heard anything they've released in the past 10 years probably)

RIP

Same, but replace "haven't heard" with "don't really care for". But yeah, just because I haven't been an angsty teenager in quite some time doesn't mean the songs I liked then don't still resonate with me. Hell, "Faint" still applies, and "Numb" and "Somewhere I Belong" still did even after the angsty teenage years wore off. Meteora was just a phenomenal album. Hybrid Theory too, but it's a bit too angsty for my current tastes (still love In The End and Papercut, though).

I'm still very saddened by this news. I was shocked to hear of it yesterday, and then I read the CNN article and found out Chester was sexually abused as a child and struggled with drug addiction, which I was not aware of, and then the news became less of a surprise. Regardless, with the sadness comes anger. I'm angry he believed there was no other option left for him. I'm angry his family left him all alone knowing what he has been through and didn't take any precautionary measures. I'm angry he left his SIX kids without a father. How could he do that??!!

I don't know if he ever sought out help for his drug and psychological issues. The guy has been through so much shit and I truly feel very bad for him. He was so talented and accomplished so much that one would hope would have steered him far away from the deep end, but unfortunately...

It's crazy even his bandmates were shocked of the news. It's like he had a sudden episode of relapse, and I believe his close friend who died the same way in May was a catalyst for his final decision. I mean, he even died on what would have been the guy's birthday. And according to the below article, his bandmates felt he was different after Chris Cornell's death.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4717504/Chester-Bennington-explains-battle-depression.html

So really, his bandmates shouldn't have been shocked and more should have been done to get Chester the help he needed. He chose to fight ffs

Also, whoever sexually abused him when he was a child needs to die the worst way possible because that's what he started the vicious spiral.

R.I.P. Chester Bennington. It's a fucking shame you are gone and you will be severely missed ;(

I will be watching a bunch of Linkin Park YT videos as a tribute to Chester tonight.

he probably thought everyone in his life was better off without the burden of his existence. Thats how I felt when I contemplated the act a couple years ago. That might not be the answer anyone wants to hear or anything, because it's not easy to comprehend unless you've been there... Ultimately though we'll never know. I know it's the stages of grief and all, but blaming everyone around him (the ones who didn't abuse him, etc) is misplaced. When I felt the same way no one knew until I finally told Digi because I needed help.
